About this creator
DJ Shiftee is a DMC World Champion turntablist turned producer — a New York artist who conquered the battle circuit and then built a second career making records. Samuel Morris Zornow’s résumé reads like a dare: 2009 DMC World DJ Finals champion, the only American ever to win the DMC Battle for World Supremacy, Harvard mathematics graduate, DubSpot program director, NYU adjunct professor. His championship pedigree gives his productions a DJ’s ear: every track is built to move a room.
The origin story starts with a Bar Mitzvah. Zornow, born January 27, 1986, in New York City, bought his first set of turntables and a mixer at thirteen with his Bar Mitzvah money — “I killed my Torah portion,” as he puts it. A Sam Ash employee taught him beatmatching; VHS tapes of every DJ battle he could find taught him the rest. His first battle, at a car show in Queens at sixteen, went badly. He kept going anyway. By seventeen he was the youngest champion ever to win the DMC New York regional — a record that stood until 2014 — and the Lo-Livez DJ crew came calling.
Then came the plot twist that defines him. Runner-up at the 2004 DMC NYC championships, Zornow stepped away from battling for three years — to attend Harvard, where he concentrated in mathematics and DJ’d campus events as the sought-after party starter. In 2007 he returned to competition and promptly won the DMC Battle for USA Supremacy, then the DMC Battle for World Supremacy — the only American DJ ever to take that title. After graduation came the crown jewel: on September 12, 2009, representing the USA at the DMC World DJ Finals, he took the title and brought the fabled gold Technics turntables back to New York City, with automatic induction into the DMC DJ Hall of Fame. Two unique world titles. One math degree. The battle circuit had produced its most unlikely complete package.
Where many champions fade into judging panels, Shiftee pivoted to the studio — and the pivot worked. His debut release Space Ace, a collaboration with Rx on Rad Summer, hit the top ten on Beatport’s dubstep charts. Originals and remixes drew support from Rustie, Starkey, Baauer, Plastician, and the bass-music vanguard; releases landed on his own HOT MOM USA imprint plus Seclusiasis, Dutty Artz, and Slit Jockey. He even bottled the battle era itself: 9 Soundware’s DJ Shiftee: Extreme Turntablism, a 212-loop sample pack recorded in the afterglow of his 2007 world domination, preserved his unhuman turntable mastery as a producer’s toolkit.
“Everything is Litty” — his summer single with Dai Burger and Fly Kaison — is the mission statement of the second act: feel-good, future-leaning hip-hop with boom-bap roots, produced and mixed by Shiftee himself. The lyric video cruises the Lower East Side, zig-zagging through traffic, selling exactly the NYC magic the track promises. It is a producer’s record in the best sense — the sound is the star, and the sound knows how a room moves because the man behind the boards has moved thousands of them.
The teaching career runs parallel to all of it. Shiftee served as DJ program director at DubSpot, the electronic music production and DJ school, and as an adjunct professor at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts — the Harvard math graduate as educator, systematizing an art form most people learn by feel. He teamed with Jamie Lidell, Tim Exile, Jeremy Ellis, and Mr. Jimmy to form Mostly Robot, the collaborative live-electronic project that premiered at Sónar in Barcelona. Native Instruments made him a Traktor ambassador; his mixes ran on BBC 1Xtra and Kiss 100. Seven nominations for America’s Best DJ tell you the industry noticed.
The dual career is the brand. Shiftee streams turntablism on Twitch for the purists — battle-honed technique, practiced in public — and drops productions for the playlists, a foot in both worlds that few artists manage. The Twitch sets keep the battle skills sharp; the studio work keeps the catalog growing. As an educator and community figure, he carries the turntablist torch forward — proof that the battle circuit produces complete musicians, not just technicians.
Champion on the tables, producer in the studio, professor in the classroom: DJ Shiftee is the rare battle DJ whose second act might outshine the first. Everything, indeed, is litty.
What endures across every chapter — the battles, the degree, the classroom, the studio — is a particular kind of rigor. Shiftee approaches the turntable the way a mathematician approaches a proof: isolate the technique, master the mechanics, then improvise inside the system. It is why his scratching sounds composed rather than merely fast, and why his productions carry a DJ’s sense of timing that can’t be faked. The bar mitzvah turntables became a world championship; the world championship became a curriculum. Few artists in any discipline have converted mastery into teaching so completely.
