About this creator
Jeremy Jahns is YouTube’s movie guy: the fast-talking Seattle critic who turned a movie-theater projectionist’s education into the internet’s most trusted theatrical guide. For more than fifteen years, his verdict has answered the only question that matters — should you see it? — honestly, hilariously, and without a single spoiler.
No forty-minute video essays, no pretension: just a smart friend in a suit against a red backdrop, telling you the truth about the movie. Over two million subscribers have learned to trust his palate — and his famous rating ladder, from “Awesometacular” down to “Dogshit.”
The origin story is pure Jahns. Born May 8, 1981, in Seattle, Washington, he spent years working as a movie-theater projectionist — thousands of hours in the booth, absorbing everything Hollywood released, good and terrible alike. It was an education no film school could sell him. He launched his YouTube channel on March 7, 2007, but didn’t find his calling until 2009, when he walked out of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen furious and uploaded a rant about it. The frustration became a format.
That format is the innovation. Jahns reviews talk fast — genuinely fast, a caffeinated clip that somehow never trips over itself — and they’re built around utility. Where film YouTube drifted toward hour-long video essays, he held the line at minutes. The audience doesn’t get a lecture; they get a verdict, delivered by someone who has clearly seen everything and has no patience for hype.
Then there’s the rating ladder, one of the great running gags in criticism. At the top sits “Awesometacular” — reserved for the genuine triumphs. At the bottom lurks “Dogshit.” Between them stretches a finely calibrated scale fans have learned like a second language: “would buy on Blu-ray,” “good time, no alcohol required,” “at matinee price,” “worth checking out when it hits streaming,” “good time if you’re drunk,” “will forget in T-minus…” Follow him long enough and you don’t need the explanation — you feel the grade.
The spoiler discipline is the craft. Jahns reviews without ruining, a rarer skill than it sounds and a harder one than it looks. For the big blockbusters — the MCU entries, the DCEU swings — he runs a two-track system: a spoiler-free verdict for the undecided, then a separate spoiler review for the already-converted who want the deep dive. You get the truth without the plot, or the full autopsy, your choice.
His annual Top 10 lists became appointment viewing in their own right. The “Top 10 Best Movies of the Year” and “Top 10 Worst Movies of the Year” videos are some of the most-watched on his channel — his Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker review alone has been watched close to three million times. Dozens of his videos have crossed a million views, and the channel has accumulated well over 600 million total views.
The industry noticed. In 2017 he hosted his own show, Awesometacular, on Verizon’s Go90 network. He became a recurring face on Collider’s Movie Talk and Ladies Night, appeared on Screen Junkies’ Movie Fights, and hosted their Movie Games show. The YouTube guy kept getting invited into the rooms where the industry talks about itself — because he’d earned the audience those rooms wanted.
What the audience trusts is the calibration. Jahns will pan the hyped and champion the overlooked with the same cheerful bluntness, and over fifteen-plus years viewers have learned exactly what his taste means. A “good time, no alcohol required” from Jeremy Jahns is worth more than a dozen anonymous five-star reviews, because you know the man, the scale, and the track record behind it. He crossed a million subscribers back in 2016 and has more than doubled that since, making him one of the most-subscribed film critics on the platform.
It hasn’t all been smooth. In 2010 he uploaded a now-deleted “Top 10 Worst Movies” video that included a segment portraying Blade in blackface; after backlash, he took the video down. It remains a footnote he’d surely rather not have — and a reminder that a career this long, lived this publicly, collects a few scars.
Away from the red backdrop, Jahns keeps a low profile in Seattle, where he lives with his two dogs, Gypsy and Danger. He skipped college, never chased traditional media credentials, and built the whole thing on the oldest currency there is: being right, being funny, and being fast.
That’s why he matters. The recommendation-engine effect is real — a Jahns endorsement moves opening weekends, and his pans have bite. In an era of algorithmic mush and sponsored enthusiasm, he is proof that honest criticism, delivered at speed and at scale, still shapes what gets made and what gets watched. See it, skip it, or stream it: decided in minutes, trusted for years.
