Lofi Girl is the most important background-music channel on the internet — a 24/7 lo-fi hip-hop radio that became a cultural institution, with over 15 million subscribers and counting.
The image is iconic: an anime girl (Jade) studying at her desk by a window overlooking Lyon, her cat keeping watch, while endless chill beats roll underneath. The animation — originally by Juan Pablo Machado — turned a simple livestream into a universal symbol of focus. Students, programmers, writers: everyone knows the girl.
The origin is French. Launched in 2015 as ChilledCow by Dimitri Som, the channel pioneered the 24/7 lo-fi stream format and renamed to Lofi Girl in 2021. The takedowns became legend too — YouTube's systems twice removed the stream over false copyright claims, and the internet revolted both times, because you don't mess with the study girl.
The business grew up around the brand. Lofi Records (founded 2017) turned the channel into a proper label with a catalog of thousands of tracks and billions of streams, multiple 24/7 stations for different moods, and playlists that rank among the world's most-followed. The Orchard partnership brought global distribution. What started as a stream became an industry.
Why people watch — or rather, listen: it's the perfect focus tool. No vocals, no surprises, just warm vinyl-crackle beats that make work feel possible. Lo-fi fans who follow Chillhop Music know the ecosystem; Lofi Girl is its sun.
Previously covers Lofi Girl because she defined a genre's visual language and built a label on top of a livestream. Press play on the stream below and get to work.
The legacy is already written. Lofi Girl didn't just popularize lo-fi hip-hop — she gave the entire internet a shared visual shorthand for concentration, one that spawned a thousand imitators and never lost the crown. The girl is still studying, the beats are still rolling, and somewhere right now a student is passing an exam because of her. Previously covers her because some channels are content; this one is infrastructure for focus itself.
The visual's origin story is almost as beloved as the stream itself. When the channel launched its 24/7 format, the looping footage was Shizuku Tsukishima — the heroine of Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart — studying at her desk. In July 2017, Ghibli filed a copyright complaint and the stream went dark for months. Rather than fight it, Dimitri put out an open call for artists: draw a student, busy revising, with Miyazaki-esque warmth. The tender landed at the École Émile-Cohl in Lyon, where Colombian-born master's student Juan Pablo Machado — who'd never even heard of lo-fi — sketched the answer. Several poses were tested, including one where the girl lies back and returns to her starting position; it was cut because it took too long to animate. The background was going to be plain black to save time — until Machado decided to draw La Croix-Rousse hill, his adopted Lyon neighborhood, outside her window. That view, the headphones, the cat on the sill: it's been the most-reproduced study image on the internet ever since it debuted in March 2018.
The takedowns didn't stop there, and they became part of the lore. In February 2020, YouTube's systems killed the stream over a false copyright claim — fans discovered the legendary 24/7 broadcast had been running for some 13,000 hours, about 541 days straight, the longest video in YouTube history. It happened again in July 2022 with another bogus DMCA strike; both times the internet erupted and YouTube confirmed the claims were invalid and restored the stream. There's no faster way to unite the entire internet than threatening the study girl.
The empire kept growing around her. In April 2023, the channel introduced a male counterpart for its synthwave stream — the internet immediately dubbed him Lofi Boy. In the summer of 2025, the channel posted a graduation video: Jade in cap and gown, laptop reading "THE END," walking across a stage. Fans who'd grown up with her — who'd passed exams, finished degrees, started careers with her beats in their ears — treated it as a full-circle moment, and the stream, of course, kept playing. Then in September 2026 came the newest 24/7 station: Lofi House, devoted to house music and hosted by a new character, Julien Maison — a 30-year-old high school biology teacher with a magnificent mustache, introduced as the "Lofi Teacher," with a 19-track Lofi Records compilation to launch it.
That label is the quiet business story. Lofi Records, founded in 2017, turned the channel from a stream into an industry: thousands of tracks from hundreds of artists, billions of streams, distribution through The Orchard, limited vinyl pressings that sell out on sight. And as generative AI flooded music platforms, the channel drew a hard line — every track broadcast or released by the label must be made by human musicians, not synthesized by AI models. It's a policy with teeth in 2026, and it says everything about what the brand stands for: the warmth is the product, and you can't fake warmth.
The cultural footprint is measurable in academia. Emma Winston of the University of London has written about the channel's power — music that feels like a remembered past that never quite existed. A UC Santa Cruz study even examined parasocial attachment to the Lofi Girl herself, treating her as a case study in how audiences bond with characters who never speak. She's been parodied, cosplayed, redrawn a million times, and canonized in memes — but the original never lost the crown, because the original was never really about the drawing. It was about the promise: sit down, press play, and get to work. Eight years, 15 million subscribers, and one endless study session later, the girl is still at her desk. The stream keeps playing; so does she.
