Patrick Baril — Statik Selektah — is hip-hop's DJ Premier heir. The Boston producer and DJ has spent two decades keeping boom-bap alive, with a catalog of collaborations that reads like a rap hall of fame.
The sound is the signature. Dusty samples, hard drums, the golden-era aesthetic refined for the modern age — Statik's beats are instantly recognizable and endlessly respected.
The guest lists are the legend. Nas, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, the entire East Coast renaissance — "What Goes Around" and the album series became the meeting place for rap's real ones.
Showoff Records is the platform. His label and the Showoff Radio show on Shade 45 became infrastructure for the underground — the DJ as curator, gatekeeper, and champion.
The mixtape era made him. Before the albums, there were the legendary mixtapes — the blends and exclusives that built his name in the streets and the industry alike.
Two decades in, the drums still knock the same. The culture's DJ, still spinning, still producing, still essential.
Previously covers Statik Selektah because the boom-bap never dies. The show's on — turn it up.
The live sets are the sermon. DJ sets that move through the eras — the classics, the exclusives, the blends — the culture's history, mixed live.
Previously covers Statik Selektah because the drums don't lie. The needle drops — pay attention.
The mentorship matters. Young producers study the drums, the sample flips, the ear — Statik's influence runs through the underground like a current. The boom-bap torch gets passed, but the originator still holds it.
The catalog is the curriculum. Two decades of beats, blends, and bars — the discography that taught a generation what hip-hop is supposed to sound like.
The radio show is the pulpit. Showoff Radio on Shade 45 — the weekly sermon of real hip-hop, broadcast to the faithful worldwide.
Platforms + audience
Every count stamped with its source and date — real numbers only.
The birth name is Patrick Owen Baril, born January 23, 1982, in Lawrence, Massachusetts — and the obsession started before he could reach the turntables. His parents' eight-track machine, cassette recorders, the family turntable: baby Statik was experimenting with all of it.
Middle school gigs came first — school dances, functions, the whole New England circuit. The conversion moment was hearing DJ Premier and Funkmaster Flex scratch and mix on Hot 97 out of New York. At fourteen, he bought his first turntables and mixer and never looked back.
The radio education was real. At Phillips Exeter Academy he ran the boards at WPEA, DJing Afro-Latino Society parties between classes. He called himself DJ Statik; the "Selektah" arrived after he heard a local reggae artist say the word without even thinking.
The mixtape era built the name. The Spell My Name Right series started in 2000 — the same year he moved back to Massachusetts to study audio production at Boston's New England Institute of Art. Boston hip-hop had a new champion with wheels of steel.
The business brain showed up early. ShowOff Marketing launched in 2003 with clients like Reebok, G-Unit Records, Virgin, Capitol, Universal, and Diddy's Vote or Die campaign. In 2006 it became ShowOff Records, with Termanology's Out the Gate as the first release.
The Termanology connection is the legacy. Statik introduced his fellow Lawrence native to the East Coast through the Hood Politics mixtapes, then formed the duo 1982 with him in 2010 — Boston's underground going national.
The solo LPs stack up: Spell My Name Right (2007), Stick 2 the Script (2009), 100 Proof: The Hangover (2010, number 37 on Billboard's Heatseeker chart), Population Control (2011) on Duck Down — the one with Mac Miller on "Groupie Love."
The catalog keeps growing: Extended Play, What Goes Around, Lucky, Statik KXNG — plus joint projects with Strong Arm Steady, Action Bronson, Ransom, Bumpy Knuckles, Evidence, and Blu. If you love East Coast hip-hop, you've heard his fingerprints.
The gamers know him too. In 2009 he appeared as the DJ on The Beat 102.7 in Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City — boom-bap blasting through Liberty City's car stereos.
The radio pulpit is Thursday nights on Eminem's Shade 45 — Showoff Radio broadcasting real hip-hop to the faithful worldwide, a gig he's held for years. Since 2015 his publishing catalog has been represented by Reservoir Media.
The New York move was 2004, but Boston never left the music. Two decades of championing New England hip-hop while producing for the biggest names on the coast — the bridge between the mixtape era and the streaming one.
