About this creator
Trent Kaniuga is the artist behind the worlds you played: a veteran concept designer whose work shaped World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, League of Legends, and Overwatch — and who walked away from the studios to build his own universes. The Twilight Monk. The teacher. The indie builder…
Trent Kaniuga is the artist behind the worlds you played. A veteran concept designer, comic-book creator, author, educator, and indie game developer, he spent the 2000s and 2010s shaping the look of some of the biggest games ever made — World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, League of Legends, Overwatch — then walked away from the studio system to build his own universes. He calls himself a “recovering concept artist.” The industry calls him a legend.
The comics came first. Born and raised in Indiana, Kaniuga fell for art young — Todd McFarlane’s work was the early obsession — and started making comics at sixteen, drawing pages in class until his career was effectively decided for him. His first successful book, CreeD, got licensed into toys and trading cards and was even optioned as an animated series (never produced). He went on to draw Ghost Rider for Marvel (2000) and The Fuzz (1997), putting in more than 25 years in comics and games.
The California move was the level-up. Kaniuga headed west and landed concept-artist roles in sequence at the industry’s biggest names: Capcom first, where on Final Fight Streetwise he did character design, world design, cutscene direction, co-wrote the script, and even did voice acting. Then Blizzard: character design and environment concept art for Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King, and character designer plus environment concept artist on Diablo 3. Then Riot Games, where his League of Legends work spanned character design, environment concept art, the 2014 Summoner’s Rift update, skins like Gentleman Gnar and Underworld Wukong, icons including Cassiopeia, rank emblems, and UI themes.
The portfolio kept growing beyond the big three. His credits include environment concept art and spray artwork for Overwatch, illustration for Hearthstone, environment concept art for Fortnite, plus work on Indivisible, Goblins and Gnomes, and a shelf of handheld-era titles — He-Man and Terminator 3 on GBA (pixel art and art direction), CannonBallers, and more. If you played games in the last twenty years, you have lived inside his drawings.
Aquatic Moon is the independence play. Eventually Kaniuga left in-house development and founded Aquatic Moon, an Orange County art house providing illustration and conceptual design — characters, environments, UI — to studios including Blizzard, Riot, Sony PlayStation, LucasArts, and Marvel. The studio’s own description nails it: they have been “the guy behind the guy,” designing characters, stories, and worlds that hundreds of millions of players have enjoyed for decades. Alongside client work, Aquatic Moon develops Kaniuga’s original properties: CreeD, Twilight Monk, and Ikeda: The Scrap Hunter.
The teacher is the second career. His YouTube channel (originally “novacolonyshow”) is one of the platform’s great art-education resources: weekly tutorials, speed paintings, live art jams, and honest talk about the business of being an artist — “Illustration VS Concept: Why do some companies want sketches and others want paintings?” is pure Kaniuga. Brush packs and templates on Gumroad and Cubebrush, workshops at studios and art schools worldwide: he teaches the way he draws, generously and without mystique.
The author is the third career. Twilight Monk — his fantasy kung-fu saga — spans two graphic novels (2012), the illustrated novel Secrets of Kung Fulio (2020), the novellas Escape from Giants Crown (2019), The Beast of Tuksa (2018), and The Man and the Moonken (2019), plus the World of Twilight Monk Vol. 1 art book. Nova Colony (2009) added a sci-fi graphic novel to the shelf. The books are the lore bible for everything else he builds.
The indie dev is the fourth. Ikeda: The Scrap Hunter — a free game on Steam — was programmed, drawn, and designed by Kaniuga himself, the ultimate solo-dev flex from a man who usually works at AAA scale. And the big swing is in development: a Twilight Monk game from Aquatic Moon Games, a dark-fantasy kung-fu adventure blending Metroidvania and RPG mechanics — the book series playable at last.
What makes him matter is the arc. Kaniuga’s career runs the full journey: the kid drawing in class, the studio veteran behind gaming’s biggest worlds, the teacher giving the knowledge away, the indie builder betting on his own IP. He is proof that the people who make the art can also own it.
The “recovering” part is the philosophy. Walking away from the biggest studios in the industry looked like a risk; it was actually a declaration — that the knowledge was the real asset, and it belonged to him. The workshops, the travel, the tutorials, the brush packs: Kaniuga turned a career’s worth of secrets into a curriculum, and a generation of artists is better for it.
