About Zain

Zain Naghmi — known to the world simply as Zain — is the best Super Smash Bros. Melee player on the planet. The Virginia-born Marth main has been ranked number one in the world in 2022, 2024, 2025, and the 2026 summer season, a run of dominance that has redefined what his character can do and cemented him as one of the greatest to ever touch a GameCube controller. In a game old enough to vote, with a competitive scene that never stopped evolving, Zain is the era-defining talent of the post-Slippi age.

The résumé reads like a Melee history book. He has won GENESIS 7, GENESIS 8, and Get On My Level Forever; finished second at The Big House 9 and Smash Summit 11; and taken third at Smash Summit 12 and Super Smash Con 2019. A 2021 PGstats panel ranked him the ninth-greatest Melee player of all time — before the best years of his career had even happened. His first major win came at Shine 2018, where he beat Mango and double-eliminated Hungrybox, announcing himself as the future of the game. The future arrived on schedule.

The Marth renaissance

To understand Zain's impact, you have to understand Marth. For years, the sword-wielding prince was considered a solved character — elegant, precise, and capped: great against some of the cast, hopelessly outgunned against the top-tier "space animals," Fox and Falco, whose blinding speed defined the modern meta. Zain took that consensus apart piece by piece. His punish game — the sequences that convert a single opening into a lost stock — is the most lethal the character has ever seen, built on spacing so exact it looks choreographed and a neutral game that turns Marth's tipper range into a minefield.

The signature of a Zain set is inevitability. He does not overwhelm opponents; he dismantles them, one perfectly spaced aerial at a time, until the crowd realizes the Fox across the stage has not touched the ground in forty seconds. It is a style that has pulled Marth back into the top-tier conversation single-handedly and inspired a generation of Marth players — the "Zain effect" — to pick up the character and study the tapes. When the history of Melee's meta is written, the chapter on Marth's second life belongs to him.

From Reston to the top of the world

Zain Naghmi was born June 11, 1996, and grew up near Chantilly, Virginia. He is of Pakistani descent — his father Hasan emigrated from Pakistan to the United States in 1972 and works in real estate; his mother Fatima works in cybersecurity — and he has an older sister, Hena, who bought the GameCube and the copy of Melee that started everything. The siblings played together, and something in the game's bottomless skill ceiling hooked him for good.

He entered his first tournament in May 2014 — "Smash @ Clarendon," a weekly in Arlington — while in his first year at Virginia Tech, and the climb was startlingly fast. Within two years he was a top-100 player in the world; by 2018 he was top 10, and he has never left. The breakout moments stacked up: 33rd at Super Smash Con 2015, a win at the MD/VA Fall Arcadian, a set off Plup at The Big House 6, and then the dam breaking at Shine 2018. Originally competing under the tag "tekkenz," he is now simply Zain — a mononym in a scene that hands them out sparingly.

The Slippi era and the sponsors

The COVID-19 pandemic could have stalled Melee; instead it supercharged it. Project Slippi's rollback netcode gave the game a real online infrastructure for the first time, and Zain owned the netplay era — dominant across the online majors of 2020, considered the best player in North America that year on the strength of his GENESIS 7 win and his Slippi-era reign. When offline majors returned, he did not miss a beat.

The sponsors noticed. He signed with the Golden Guardians in February 2020, spent three years with the organization, and in April 2023 joined Moist Esports — the org founded by Charles "MoistCr1TiKaL" White Jr. — which later merged with Shopify Rebellion, where he remains signed today. It is a fitting home: a player-first organization for a player who has always let the gameplay do the talking. He streams regularly on Twitch as zainnaghmi, one of the most-watched Melee channels on the platform, where his grind sessions and tournament runs draw the scene's faithful in force.

The DontTestMe legend

Ask Melee fans about Zain's second character and you will get a grin. Under the alias "DontTestMe," he has taken sets off top players with Roy — Marth's weaker, flashier echo-fighter cousin — a flex so disrespectful it became folklore. It is the clearest window into how he sees the game: not as a set of matchups to survive, but as a language he speaks fluently enough to improvise in. The Roy sets are party tricks with a point — proof that his dominance is about the player, not the pick.

That completeness is what separates him from the other greats of his generation. Where Mang0 brings chaos, Hungrybox brings endurance, and Leffen brings precision engineering, Zain brings something closer to inevitability — the sense, shared by opponents and commentators alike, that the set is already decided and everyone is just watching it happen.

What's happening now

As of the 2026 summer season, Zain is still ranked number one in the world — the fourth time he has held the top spot, and the clearest possible answer to anyone who wondered whether the crown would slip. A decade into his competitive career, in a game that rewards youth and reaction time above almost everything, he keeps winning because his game was never really about either. It is about understanding: spacing, patience, punishment, the long game. Melee is twenty-five years old. Its best player is playing the best Melee of his life.
