Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated entertainment release in history — and the road here has been anything but straight. Rockstar Games confirmed the next Grand Theft Auto was "well underway" in February 2022, ending years of speculation. What followed was a saga of record-breaking trailers, a devastating leak, and two major delays that moved billions of dollars in market value.
The trailers that broke the internet
Rockstar published the first GTA VI trailer on December 4, 2023, as part of the studio's 25th anniversary celebration. It broke the record for the most views on a non-music YouTube video in its first 12 hours — 46 million — and within 24 hours became the third most-viewed video of all time with 93 million views, trailing only two BTS music videos. The debut trailer carried a 2025 release window.
Trailer 2 arrived in May 2025, captured entirely in-game on PlayStation 5 — a flex that silenced skeptics about the game's visual ambition. Then in August 2026, Rockstar dropped "An Extended Look": 26 minutes of real gameplay, the deepest dive into any GTA before launch, revealing 600,000+ unique animations, a rebuilt wanted system, and an in-game phone that functions as a real system.
Two delays, billions moved
The 2025 window didn't hold. In May 2025, Rockstar pushed the game to May 26, 2026, citing the need for additional polish. Six months later came the second delay — to the current target of November 19, 2026. Each delay announcement sent Take-Two Interactive's stock tumbling; the second delay alone wiped as much as 18% off the share price in a single day.
In February 2026, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed the November 19 date remains on track — and said the full marketing campaign would begin in Summer 2026. He wasn't bluffing. Since late August 2026, Rockstar has kept a near-weekly rhythm of GTA VI news, almost always landing on a Thursday. Fans dubbed it "GTA-mas": a Netflix Extended Look special on August 27, a PlayStation-exclusive DualSense controller reveal, pre-order openings, soundtrack artist confirmations, and a $400 Collector's Edition box reveal that drew backlash for not including a physical game copy.
The world: Leonida
GTA VI is set in Leonida, Rockstar's fictional take on Florida, with Vice City — the Miami-inspired location from 2002's GTA: Vice City — at its heart. According to Game Informer's 14-page cover story (Issue 382, September 2026), Leonida is divided into six regions: Vice City, Grassrivers (the Everglades), the Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.
Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries told Game Informer that players who complete the story will not have seen the entire map — the campaign doesn't have time to take players everywhere. Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North described Leonida as the largest world the studio has built "by some degree," covering roughly double the area of GTA V's Los Santos and Blaine County.
It's a living place. Tropical storms and hurricanes roll through with localized, dynamic weather — wind moves hair and debris on rooftops, ripples water, bends grass in the swamps. Over 170 animal species roam the wilds, including more than 60 types of bird, grouped into rare, discoverable, and legendary categories. Alligators, manatees, flamingos, sharks, whales, and macaques are confirmed.
The protagonists: Lucia and Jason
For the first time in series history, one of the two protagonists is a woman. Lucia Caminos — fresh out of Leonida Penitentiary when the story begins — is sharp, dangerous, and done being underestimated. Jason Duval is an Army veteran who drifted into running jobs for drug smugglers in the Leonida Keys. When an easy score goes wrong, the two are pulled into a conspiracy stretching across the state — a Bonnie-and-Clyde crime saga for a new era.
Rockstar confirms a relationship system between Lucia and Jason that shapes story beats and gameplay — and it can develop along romantic or platonic lines depending on player choices. Fast travel works through RydeMe, an in-game ride-hailing app, where players can change the radio, browse social media, or talk to the driver during the trip.
The business: editions, pricing, and what it means
GTA VI launches November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version has not been officially confirmed — though the series' track record (GTA V hit PC 19 months after consoles) makes one a matter of when, not if. Preloading begins November 12, a full week before launch.
The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99; the Ultimate Edition at $99.99. Analysts estimate the Ultimate Edition accounts for roughly 89% of pre-orders — and Take-Two's CEO has confirmed Ultimate is outselling Standard. Physical copies contain a download code, not a disc. The game is rated M by the ESRB, with "blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol."
