ALDS Game 3s: Yankees Face Elimination at the Stadium, White Sox One Win From First ALCS Since 2005

The White Sox play their first home playoff game since 2021 on Wednesday afternoon with a chance to reach the ALCS for the first time since 2005, while the Yankees fight for their season at Yankee Stadium after four errors sank them in Game 2.

The American League Division Series reaches its tipping point on Wednesday, and the pennant round is suddenly in view for two road clubs that refuse to lose. The Chicago White Sox, up two games to none on the Cleveland Guardians, take the field at Rate Field on Wednesday afternoon for their first home playoff game since 2021 — one win from their first ALCS in more than two decades. Four hours later the Tampa Bay Rays walk into Yankee Stadium for an 8 p.m. ET elimination game, the New York Yankees down 0-2 and out of margin for error after beating themselves in Game 2.

Two games, two time zones, two series that could end before the night is over. The ALDS doubleheader on Wednesday — Guardians-White Sox at 4 p.m. ET, Rays-Yankees at 8 p.m. ET, both on TBS — has the shape of a coronation and a funeral, though baseball has a way of mocking that kind of certainty.

AL Division Series · White Sox lead 2-0A homecoming five years in the making

No team in baseball has had a stranger two years. The Chicago White Sox lost a major-league-record 121 games two seasons ago, then followed it up with 102 losses last year. Now they are perfect in the postseason: a Wild Card sweep of the Astros in Houston, a 2-0 ALDS lead on the AL Central champion Guardians, and on Wednesday afternoon their first home playoff game since 2021 — a win sends them to the ALCS for the first time since they won the 2005 World Series.

Monday’s 4-3 win in Cleveland was a microcosm of the whole improbable run. The White Sox trailed 2-0 in the first inning — opener Anthony Kay and Sean Newcomb yielded two first-inning runs — and it was the only time Chicago has trailed in four playoff games. The answer came in layers: Braden Montgomery’s go-ahead two-run double in the sixth flipped the game, Sean Burke threw 5⅔ nearly perfect innings of relief — retiring 15 of 17, the lone hit a two-out single to Chase DeLauter in the eighth — and Grant Taylor recorded a four-out save that was pure theater. Taylor gave up a first-pitch RBI triple to Jo Adell, then stranded him and retired the side in the ninth.

Chicago hasn’t played at home since September 27. The last time Rate Field hosted October baseball, it was 2021. The gap between that night and this one — the 121-loss crater, the 102-loss encore, the sudden October electricity — is the story of Wednesday’s first game. One win and the White Sox are playing for a pennant.

AL Division Series · Guardians down 0-2Cleveland fighting for its season

Spare a thought for Gavin Williams. The Guardians right-hander struck out 11 in Monday’s Game 2 loss — a history-making outing in defeat — and all it bought was a two-run hole his teammates couldn’t escape. Cleveland’s offense managed three runs on seven hits, and for a club that won the AL Central, the margin for error is now zero: lose Wednesday in Chicago and the season ends in enemy territory.

The Guardians are down to their last swing of the season. They have hit in this series — DeLauter’s single off Burke, Adell’s triple off Taylor — but the hits haven’t come in sequence, and the bullpen’s narrow misses have been decisive. Wednesday afternoon at Rate Field, with a pennant-berth crowd in full throat, is the hardest possible place to start a comeback. But the alternative is winter.

AL Division Series · Rays lead 2-0Four errors and no more tomorrows

There are ways to lose a playoff game, and then there is what the Yankees did Monday night in Tampa. The Rays’ 5-2 Game 2 win was built on a relentless four-run fourth inning off Cam Schlittler — and on four Yankees errors, the kind of defensive collapse that turns a winnable October game into a wake. The Yankees didn’t just lose. As the story of the night had it, they beat themselves.

Now the series moves to the Bronx, and the math is unforgiving. The Rays are one win from the ALCS. The Yankees face an elimination game at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, the errors and missed chances of Game 2 hanging over everything. An elimination game at home is supposed to be a crowd weapon; on Wednesday it will feel like an interrogation — 46,000 people waiting to see which version of this team shows up.

What’s at stake WednesdayTwo pennant berths on one night

The arithmetic is simple and the possibilities are loud. A White Sox win at 4 p.m. ET and the ALCS gets its first team — Chicago, the franchise that lost 121 games, playing for the pennant for the first time since 2005. A Yankees loss at 8 p.m. ET and the Bronx goes quiet for the winter, the Rays moving on with four wins banked and nothing to apologize for.

Both series have their rotations lined up for the week — no names need naming; the arms are ready and the only question is whether the moment swallows them. For the full postseason picture, see the MLB page.
