Army Beats Florida Atlantic 56-24 as Cale Hellums Rushes for Five Touchdowns and 195 Yards

Four touchdowns before halftime, a record-tying fifth in the fourth quarter, and 479 rushing yards as a team: Army did not just beat Florida Atlantic at Michie Stadium on Saturday, it ran the Owls out of the building.

There are wins, and then there are afternoons where one team simply imposes its entire personality on the other. Army's 56-24 steamrolling of Florida Atlantic at Michie Stadium on Saturday was the second kind. According to the Record Online, the Black Knights produced eight touchdowns and rolled up 479 yards of rushing offense, turning every one of FAU's three turnovers into points. At the center of all of it was senior quarterback Cale Hellums, who rushed for a career-high four touchdowns in the first half alone and added a record-tying fifth score in the fourth quarter, finishing with 195 yards on 25 carries. Some days the quarterback is the story. On Saturday, Hellums was practically the whole book.

The tone was set on the very first snap of the game, and it was set by Army's defense. According to the Record Online, heralded FAU quarterback Caden Veltkamp threw a pick on the first snap, as Jack Bousom tipped the pass and Elijah Walton made the interception. Army West Point Athletics likewise reported that the Black Knights' defense forced three takeaways on the afternoon. Army's offense responded the way Army's offense does: immediately, and on the ground. According to the Record Online, Hellums pitched to Samari Howard, who kept his balance after being spun at the 15 and completed a 30-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. One snap for FAU's offense, one interception, one Army touchdown. If you were an Owls fan settling into your seat, you already knew what kind of day this was going to be.

To FAU's credit, it answered once. According to the Record Online, Veltkamp responded right away, completing three throws on an eight-play scoring drive and finding Easton Messer on a 24-yard touchdown. The first quarter had a track-meet feel, with the teams trading scores and FAU's passing game showing real life. But track meets at Michie Stadium tend to end the same way: the home team keeps running, the visitors keep tackling, and eventually the math overwhelms everybody. Army was a perfect 5-for-5 on touchdown drives in the first half, according to the Record Online, and Hellums kept appearing in the end zone like he had a reserved parking spot there — four rushing touchdowns before halftime, a career high before the bands had even played.

By the break, the game was effectively over, and the second half became about the record book. According to Army West Point Athletics, Hellums scored his touchdowns on runs of 58, 4, 2, 3 and 1 yards, and Army scored its touchdowns almost exclusively on the ground, attempting barely a handful of passes all afternoon. The fifth touchdown — the one that tied the academy record — was not the 58-yard sprint but a hard-fought 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter. According to the Record Online, Hellums spun off a tackler and reached backward to get the ball over the goal line. Fitting, honestly: the record-tying score was the grittiest one of the five.

The Record Online also placed the performance in its proper context, noting the growing parallels between Hellums and his predecessor Bryson Daily, who set the academy mark Hellums has now matched. Hellums himself was quick to share the credit afterward. “Bryson's a great friend of mine,” Hellums said, according to the Record Online. “He was an awesome teammate and someone that I looked up to when I was playing behind him.” That is a gracious quote from a man who had just tied his friend's record, and it says something about how Army's quarterback room passes the job down: the standard stays, the names change.

The standings implications are real, too. According to the Record Online, Army (4-2) moves into sole possession of third place in the American Conference at 3-1 with the win, while FAU falls to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference — its first league loss of the season. For an Army team that had spent recent weeks in tight, low-scoring fights, hanging 56 points and nearly 500 rushing yards on a 4-2 opponent is the kind of statement that travels. Opposing defensive coordinators now have a very long film session waiting for them, and most of it is Hellums running downhill behind an offensive line that won the day from the first series.

FAU will look at three turnovers turned into touchdowns and a defense that could not get off the field, and know the afternoon was lost in the trenches long before the scoreboard got silly. Army will look at the same film and see an identity confirmed at exactly the right point in the season. Five touchdowns from the quarterback, eight from the team, 479 rushing yards: that is not a game plan catching a defense off guard. That is a program doing precisely what it believes in, at full speed, for four quarters. Catch up on the rest of Saturday's action in our sports section and the day's full rundown in the news index.
