Bears Week 6 Injury Report: Monangai Sidelined Again, Gordon Trending Toward a Return in Atlanta

Chicago's Week 6 injury report for Sunday in Atlanta: Kyle Monangai, T.J. Edwards, Keyshaun Elliott and Dayo Odeyingbo did not practice, Kyler Gordon was a full participant again, and Caleb Williams practiced in full for a second straight day.

The Short Version

The Chicago Bears are heading to Atlanta short-handed in some spots and quietly healthier in others, and Thursday's Week 6 injury report managed to deliver both kinds of news at once. According to Bleacher Nation's October 15 report and Bears Wire's Thursday update, four players sat out practice entirely: running back Kyle Monangai with thumb and toe injuries, linebackers T.J. Edwards (hamstring) and Keyshaun Elliott (quad), and defensive lineman Dayo Odeyingbo (quad). Cornerback Kyler Gordon, meanwhile, practiced in full for the second consecutive day, and quarterback Caleb Williams did the same — two developments that matter a great deal more to Chicago's Sunday than the absences, even if the absences sting.

Start with the running back room, because that is where the trend line is worst. Bleacher Nation notes that if the current pattern holds, Monangai will miss his second consecutive game. That is not a footnote for this offense. Chicago learned last week how steep the drop-off is from Monangai as the second back to the next man up: the reserve runner brings real value on special teams and as a pass blocker, but he does not change a defense's math the way Monangai does coming out of the backfield. Against a Falcons team that will happily load up and dare Chicago to throw, losing the change-of-pace back for a second week running narrows the playbook in ways that show up on third down.

The defensive absences carry their own weight. Edwards is the kind of linebacker whose hamstring injury ripples through the middle of a defense — run fits, underneath coverage, all of it gets a half-step slower. Elliott's quad keeps a second linebacker off the field, and Odeyingbo's quad injury thins a defensive line rotation that was already being asked to carry a heavy snap load. On Tap Sports Net's report on the Wednesday estimated report — Chicago held a walkthrough that day, so participation was an estimation — adds useful context: Edwards and Odeyingbo were new additions to the injury sheet after Sunday's game against Green Bay, while Elliott and Monangai were holdovers who had already been ruled out the previous Friday. In other words, this is not one bad week. It is a list that grew.

Gordon's return would land exactly where Chicago needs it

The counterweight to all of that is Gordon. Bleacher Nation reports the cornerback was a full participant again on Thursday, and the timing could hardly be better designed. There was optimism late last week that Gordon might be activated from injured reserve, but the Bears chose to activate linebacker Noah Sewell instead. Gordon remains within his 21-day practice window, per On Tap Sports Net, and a second straight full practice is exactly the signal teams look for before making the activation call. Chicago's cornerback group has been stretched thin, and getting a starting-caliber nickel back into the mix for a road game against Atlanta's passing attack would be, in Bleacher Nation's phrasing, a genuine shot in the arm.

It helps that the other starting corner is at least trending the right way. Tyrique Stevenson remained limited with a hip injury for a second day, according to both Bears Wire and Falcons Wire's Thursday reports. Limited is not ideal — nobody game-plans around a corner who cannot open his hips at full speed — but limited in practice on Thursday usually means available on Sunday, and Chicago will take available. The alternative, a secondary missing both Gordon and Stevenson against Michael Penix Jr., is the sort of thing that keeps defensive coordinators awake.

Williams full again, and the veterans rest

The headline act, though, is the quarterback. Bears Wire reports Williams practiced in full for a second straight day after Wednesday's estimated full session, and Falcons Wire likewise lists him as a full participant who is expected to play Sunday. Williams missed time with a hamstring injury — Falcons Wire's Wednesday report described it as a Grade 2 strain that cost him two games — and his return to full work this week is the clearest sign yet that Chicago expects its starter under center at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The matchup has a nice bit of symmetry to it: Williams and Penix were both top-10 picks in the 2024 draft, and Sunday sets up as their first meeting as professionals, with Penix telling reporters he is good to go after leaving last week's game with a rib injury, per Falcons Wire.

Two names on the did-not-practice list should not worry anyone. Defensive lineman Grady Jarrett and left guard Joe Thuney sat out with veteran rest designations, according to every outlet carrying the report — the standard midweek maintenance for established starters, not new injuries. Their absence from Thursday's sheet is housekeeping, not news.

One more report lands Friday, with official game statuses, and that is where this story gets its ending. If Gordon is activated and Stevenson holds at limited-but-available, Chicago's secondary walks into Atlanta closer to whole than it has been in weeks. If Monangai, Edwards, Elliott and Odeyingbo all carry doubtful or out tags, the Bears will be asking their depth to win a road game in the NFC's muddled middle. Both things can be true at once, and right now, both are. For more from a busy sports day, see our Thursday Night Football preview, our NLCS Game 4 preview and everything on the Sports hub.
