Mother Killed, 5-Month-Old Baby Critically Hurt in Bronx Balcony Fall; Ex-Boyfriend Sought

Nathaly Ramirez, 23, was found dead at Jacobi Hospital after she and her baby daughter were pushed from the 15th floor of a Bronx apartment building around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday. The baby is clinging to life — and the woman’s ex-boyfriend is being sought for questioning.

A 23-year-old mother was killed and her baby daughter critically injured after both were pushed from a 15th-floor balcony at a Bronx apartment building early Tuesday, police said, and the woman’s ex-boyfriend is being sought for questioning. Nathaly Ramirez, described as a “kind-hearted” and “very sweet” young mother who studied psychology at Baruch College, was clutching her 5-month-old baby when she was pushed around 3:40 a.m. at 2550 Olinville Ave., according to the New York Post, citing NYPD sources.

Officers found the mother and child on the ground with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated position, the NYPD said. Both victims were rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where the mother was pronounced dead and the baby girl is clinging to life, police said. FOX 5 New York reported the pair were found on the pavement on Olinville Avenue in the Allerton section just before 4 a.m., and that investigators were initially examining whether the two fell, jumped, or were pushed. The NYPD later determined that both individuals had been pushed from the balcony, the Post reported.

The scene“Please don’t do this!”

“Please don’t do this!” — a neighbor told WABC-TV she heard a woman yelling those words before seeing something plummet to the ground. Sources told the Post that witnesses said she and the baby had been shoved off the balcony, and that Emergency Service Unit officers entered the building to search for a suspect on Tuesday morning.

Hours later, the baby’s diaper and a white baby blanket remained on the ground behind police tape outside the building as investigators continued their work, the Post reported in a follow-up from the scene. A stuffed child’s toy was also seen near the taped-off area.

The searchEx-boyfriend sought for questioning

The woman’s ex-boyfriend is now being sought for questioning in the case, law-enforcement sources told the Post. Police have not said whether he is the baby’s father. No suspect had been taken into custody as of Tuesday afternoon, and the investigation was described as a developing story, with further details expected.

There were numerous reports of domestic violence at the home resulting in arrests over the past few years, sources told the Post. Investigators had also examined whether the mother might have jumped or fallen with her baby while struggling with someone, sources said, before determining that both victims had been pushed.

The victimRemembered as “kind-hearted”

Ramirez was identified by the NYPD, and those who knew her described her as a kind-hearted young mother who had been studying psychology at Baruch College, the Post reported. Her baby daughter remains in critical condition at Jacobi Hospital, where doctors were fighting to keep her alive Tuesday.

The morningHow the day unfolded

The fall happened in the pre-dawn dark: the main report puts the time at about 3:40 a.m., while a follow-up put it at 3:38 a.m. — a discrepancy of minutes, not substance. FOX 5 New York reported that officers were called to Olinville Avenue in the Allerton section just before 4 a.m., finding the woman and child on the pavement with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated position. The NYPD’s subsequent determination — that both had been pushed — came after investigators examined whether the mother might have jumped or fallen with the baby while struggling with someone, sources told the Post.

Emergency Service Unit officers entered the building Tuesday morning to search for a suspect, the Post reported — and by mid-morning, ESU officers were seen leaving the building after the search, hours after the first 911 calls brought officers to the pavement below. By the afternoon, law-enforcement sources said investigators had identified a potential person of interest in the incident, though no details were released. In the building’s courtyard, the aftermath lingered for hours: the baby’s diaper, a white baby blanket and a stuffed child’s toy sat behind police tape as detectives worked the scene.

The unknownWhat we still don’t know

Honest accounting matters here. As of Tuesday afternoon: no suspect had been taken into custody, and police had not said whether the ex-boyfriend being sought is the same person as the potential person of interest investigators identified. They had not said whether he is the baby’s father. The NYPD has not released the identity of the ex-boyfriend it is seeking. The Post reported numerous domestic violence reports at the home resulting in arrests over the past few years — but no further details were immediately available about those incidents. The baby’s condition remained critical, and her mother’s death turned the investigation into a homicide probe with the child’s life still hanging in the balance.

The case is the latest tragedy involving violence against women in New York City this week. In Baltimore, a separate shooting at a park left a 12-year-old hurt — another community left searching for answers. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 1-800-799-7233, 24 hours a day.
