TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2026 — Before the Oscar, before the platinum records, before the blockbusters, Jamie Foxx was a man with a mic making people laugh. Tomorrow, he goes back to where it all began. “Jamie Foxx: Take Care of Yourself” premieres Tuesday, October 7, on Hulu, according to Blex Media, with availability through Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally — a detail Essence confirmed in its coverage of the special.
The specialWhat the trailer shows
The trailer finds Foxx dancing across the stage and cracking jokes about getting older, Blex Media stated, in an hour Hulu is billing as “his most honest, evolved, and unforgettable chapter yet.” The special turns the realities of aging into material for the set, Essence noted — even the title borrows from one of Foxx’s own punchlines about getting older, Blex Media added.
In the trailer, Foxx leans into his classic storytelling mode: “I live in an all-white neighborhood, and a real gangbanger walked up on me,” he says, Blex Media quoted. “I said, ‘How did you get in here?’ My white friends didn’t know what was going [on]: ‘Is this your cousin?’ No, this is danger!” ComingSoon described the hour as one in which Foxx gets candid about adjusting his lifestyle, coping with back pain, and his hilarious encounters with younger audiences and neighbors. The outlet added that the special lands in a packed week for Hulu, sharing its October 7 premiere date with the Huluween entry Clown Panic — but the Foxx hour is the flagship of the streamer’s comedy push.
The timing puts Foxx at the center of a busy season for stand-up specials on streaming, alongside releases like Mojo Brookzz’s “I Know You Lying,” now on Netflix — and Hulu is clearly treating Take Care of Yourself as a flagship event, part of its growing “Hularious” comedy slate. The venueA full-circle night in Oakland
The special was filmed in April at the Calvin Simmons Theatre in Oakland, Memorable TV stated — two shows on April 16 and 17 as part of his Back on My Funny tour, which the outlet described as the tour that officially marked his return to stand-up. It was, by every account, a deliberate choice of room: the same venue where Foxx competed in the Bay Area Black Comedy Competition more than three decades ago, a gig Memorable TV noted he has credited as a turning point in his career.
“Oakland isn’t just hosting the night,” the show’s description read, Memorable TV added. “It’s sealing it.” Blex Media echoed the symbolism, writing that Foxx brought to the lineup something none of the other comedians could claim — a performer who had survived something genuinely terrifying, fought his way all the way back, and returned to the exact stage where his career started.
The journeyWhat he had to survive to get there
What makes this special hit different isn’t just the jokes — it’s everything Foxx had to survive to get back on that stage. In 2023, he suffered a medical emergency later revealed to be a brain bleed that led to a stroke, Blex Media stated, adding that he has said he doesn’t remember 20 days of that period and that when he came out of it, he was in a wheelchair, unable to walk. Memorable TV gave the same account of his April 2023 medical emergency, noting the brain bleed, the stroke and the 20 days unconscious.
His first return to stand-up came via 2024’s Netflix special What Had Happened Was, where he walked out and declared “I’m back!” before addressing the swirl of online speculation about his health, Blex Media noted. That hour was his first public account of the emergency, and Take Care of Yourself picks up where it left off. As Memorable TV put it, the new special builds on the momentum of a tour he has been running since his recovery — and carries the line from the 2024 special that has become something of a personal motto, via the San Francisco Chronicle: “If I can stay funny, I can stay alive.”

The comebackBeat Shazam, then two films
The Hulu special is the latest chapter in a comeback that has been building all year. Beat Shazam’s eighth season premiered in July 2026 on Fox, with Foxx back hosting alongside his daughter Corinne — the father-daughter pairing anchoring the music-guessing game’s return after his health-related absence. And the momentum keeps building on the film side: Foxx’s upcoming slate includes Deadlocked for Amazon MGM Studios, directed by Nikhil Bhat, and Fight for ’84 for Netflix, directed by Andres Baiz.
It is a remarkable arc for an entertainer whose foundation was always comedy. Blex Media noted he was doing stand-up before In Living Color put him on TV in the early ’90s, which led to his own sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show, five seasons of it, before he crossed into dramatic acting with Any Given Sunday and Ali. Then 2004 delivered one of the great years in recent Hollywood history: a Best Actor Oscar for Ray and a Supporting Actor nomination for Collateral in the same year, Blex Media stated, all while he built a music career on the side. Comedy, drama, music, TV, movies — Foxx made juggling all of it look like a single, continuous career. This weekend’s Saturday Night Live premiere, with Dakota Johnson hosting, was another reminder of how much live TV and live performance still anchor the culture he helped build.

The slateHulu goes “Hularious”
The special lands as part of Hulu’s “Hularious” comedy slate, Blex Media confirmed — a lineup that also includes Bill Burr, Nikki Glaser, Jim Gaffigan, Sebastian Maniscalco, Kumail Nanjiani, Ilana Glazer, Roy Wood Jr., Hannah Berner, Ralph Barbosa, Chris Distefano, Zarna Garg, Jessica Kirson, Matteo Lane, Atsuko Okatsuka, Frankie Quiñones and Andrew Santino. Essence confirmed the special is part of the streamer’s Hularious comedy lineup as well. It is the fifth stand-up special of Foxx’s career, ComingSoon stated, noting it follows his 2024 special — a run that began with Straight From the Foxxhole in 1993, continued through I Might Need Security in 2002 and Jamie Foxx Unleashed: Lost, Stolen and Leaked! in 2003, and crossed three decades to arrive, now, at an hour about the one subject every comic eventually reaches: getting older, and laughing through it.
