Thursday Night CFB Live: Liberty Pulling Away From Sam Houston, South Alabama-Arkansas State Is a Track Meet

Four games, four second halves, and the storylines are writing themselves: the Flames are one quarter from five straight, the Jaguars and Red Wolves can't stop scoring, and USF-UTSA is dead even.

The Short Version

Thursday night in college football is the undercard that keeps stealing the show, and tonight is no exception. Four games are in their second halves, and every one of them is telling a different story: a coronation in Lynchburg, a track meet in Jonesboro, a street fight in San Antonio, and a slow squeeze in Bowling Green. Here’s where things stand and what it all means.

02 Liberty 28, Sam Houston 3 — The Flames Are Rolling

This morning’s preview had Liberty laying 13.5 at home with a total of 52.5, riding a four-game win streak and an offense that had hung 30-plus in three straight. Well: the Flames are about to make it five straight wins, and they’ve done it the methodical way — a touchdown in every single quarter (7-7-7-7 on the ESPN linescore) while holding the Bearkats to a lone field goal.

The number that jumps off the page is 3. Sam Houston came into Thursday night leading Conference USA in passing, and Liberty’s defense has completely bottled it up. Three points through three and a half quarters isn’t an off night; that’s a game plan executed. The Flames are covering the 13.5 with a quarter to spare, the under on the 52.5 was never in doubt — bad news for this morning’s Ticket card, which had the over as one of its four Super Ticker legs — and Liberty is tightening its grip on the CUSA race one steady touchdown drive at a time.

Zoom out and this is what a Group of Five contender is supposed to look like in October: no drama, no letdown spot at home on a Thursday, just four quarters of doing the thing. The Flames won’t get style points for beating Sam Houston by 25, but in the CUSA title race, boring wins count exactly the same as pretty ones.

03 South Alabama 42, Arkansas State 28 — Seventy Points and Counting

If Lynchburg is a coronation, Jonesboro is a fireworks show. South Alabama leads Arkansas State 42-28 late in the third quarter, and the two teams have combined for 70 points with a full quarter still to play. The Jaguars put up 14 in the first, 20 in the second, and 8 more in the third; the Red Wolves answered with 21 in the second quarter alone. Nobody is punting, everybody is scoring, and the defenses have officially left the building.

Nobody is punting, everybody is scoring, and the defenses have officially left the building. Seventy combined points through three quarters would cash just about any total the books hung on this one.

What it means depends on which sideline you’re on. For South Alabama, 42 points through three quarters on the road is a statement: the Jaguars’ offense is for real, and they’re doing it in a game they had to have to stay in the Sun Belt West race. For Arkansas State, 28 points should win you a lot of football games; tonight it has them down two scores at home. The Red Wolves’ defense needs answers, and it needs them by Saturday film session.

04 USF 17, UTSA 17 — Dead Even in San Antonio

The best game of the night might be the one nobody circled. USF led UTSA 17-10 at halftime in San Antonio, and the Roadrunners have come all the way back to tie it at 17 in the third quarter. No shootout here — this is the kind of grinding, field-position Thursday game that gets decided by one drive in the fourth quarter.

UTSA getting to even at home matters. The Roadrunners were staring at a two-score second-half hole against a USF team that came in with momentum, and instead of folding they’ve made it a brand-new game. Whichever team wins the fourth quarter wins the night, and in the American Conference race, a Thursday home win in October is worth its weight in November tiebreakers.

05 WKU 27, Missouri State 13 — The Hilltoppers Pull Away

The fourth game of the night is following the script, just slower than expected. Western Kentucky leads Missouri State 27-13 in the fourth quarter in Bowling Green, scoring in every quarter (7-14-3-3) while the Bears have managed 13. Missouri State — still finding its footing at the FBS level — hung around for a half, trailing just 21-6 at one point after a third-quarter touchdown made it briefly interesting. But WKU’s offense has been the steadier unit all night, and the Hilltoppers are closing it out.

For WKU, this is a workmanlike conference win, the kind that keeps you in the CUSA conversation without spending any emotional capital. For Missouri State, moral victories don’t count in the standings, but hanging within two scores on the road in Bowling Green for three quarters is a data point the program can build on.

06 What Thursday Sets Up

The weekend slate is loaded — No. 2 Georgia at Alabama, Texas at Oklahoma, and a full Saturday card — and Thursday’s results feed straight into the conference races that decide December. A Liberty win keeps the Flames on track for the CUSA title game. A South Alabama win keeps the Jaguars alive in the Sun Belt West. A UTSA comeback win would be the kind of Thursday result that looks bigger in hindsight.
