SANTA CLARA · SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2026
There are Monday night games that feel like a coin flip, and then there is this one. The San Francisco 49ers walk into Levi's Stadium on Monday night at 5-0, favored by more than a touchdown, backed by essentially every expert panel in the country. The Washington Commanders walk in at 1-3-1, fresh off the most frustrating result in football — a tie they should have won — and carrying two decades of failure in this building. Monday Night Football, October 19 at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC, is a showcase for one team and something close to a season referendum for the other.
Start with the gap between these teams, because every preview of this game starts there. Athlon Sports reported that San Francisco is favored by 7.5 points at FanDuel, with the total set at 52.5, a number The Grueling Truth's preview also listed. A Niners Wire roundup of national expert picks, cited by Athlon, counted 51 of 52 picks for the 49ers — the lone Washington selection came from Bleacher Report's Kris Knox. Sports Illustrated's staff panel went 8-0 for San Francisco, and the CBS Sports against-the-spread panel went six of seven, Athlon reported. When that many people agree, it is usually because the evidence is one-sided: Sports Illustrated betting analyst Iain MacMillan, making what he called a strong argument that the 49ers are the best team in the NFL, noted that San Francisco ranks third in the league in both points scored and points allowed.
How San Francisco got to 5-0
The 49ers' last outing was not a coronation; it was an escape. San Francisco survived Seattle 32-29 on the road, according to USA Today's Sportsbook Wire, in a game that was sloppy on both sides. Sportsbook Wire reported that quarterback Brock Purdy completed 19 of 29 passes for 189 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, wide receiver Mike Evans caught seven passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, and running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 68 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. The defense did the heaviest lifting: five sacks of Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold and four forced turnovers, per Sportsbook Wire, on a day when San Francisco committed three turnovers of its own and was outgained only narrowly, 269 yards to 251.
That profile — an offense that can be contained for stretches and a defense that ends arguments — is exactly what makes San Francisco hard to pick against at home. Kyle Shanahan's team does not need to be pretty to be 5-0. It needs its pass rush to arrive, its stars to win their handful of decisive snaps, and Levi's Stadium to do the rest under the lights. Monday is San Francisco's first Monday Night Football appearance of the season and the first regular-season night game at Levi's Stadium this year, the 49ers noted in their game preview, on what the team is also staging as Alumni Weekend.
Washington's tie that felt like a loss
Washington's week was the opposite of an escape. The Commanders settled for a 27-27 overtime tie with the New York Giants after blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead — the first tie of the NFL season, The Grueling Truth noted. Sportsbook Wire detailed the ending that will follow this team into Santa Clara: in overtime, at the Giants' 24-yard line with 12 seconds left and no timeouts, Washington ran another play instead of setting up a field goal, quarterback Jayden Daniels scrambled for no gain, and time expired before the Commanders could stop the clock and bring on the kicking unit. Poor clock management, Sportsbook Wire wrote, cost Washington a chance at the win.
The cruel part for Washington is that Daniels, back in the lineup after missing two games with a left elbow injury, played well enough to win. Sportsbook Wire reported he completed 17 of 25 passes for 199 yards and ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns against New York. Instead, the story of the week in Washington has been the collapse and what it means for head coach Dan Quinn. Athlon, citing SportsLine's Daniel Kohn on the Commanders trying to get past their debacle against the Giants, reported that the blown lead has put Quinn's job under a brighter light. A coach on a warming seat, a quarterback just back from injury, and a road trip to face an unbeaten team on Monday night is nobody's idea of a get-right spot.
History is not on Washington's side
The historical numbers are as lopsided as the expert picks. Washington has not won a true road game at San Francisco since 2004, a drought noted by Athlon via the team's own game preview and by The Grueling Truth, and the Commanders are just 1-4 against the 49ers in Monday games. Sportsbook Wire added that San Francisco leads the all-time series 23-12-1, has won three of the last four meetings and seven of the last nine, and won the most recent matchup 27-10 in 2023, when Purdy threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns.
There is also a piece of league history waiting for the home team. The 49ers, in their own preview of Monday's game, noted that San Francisco has played on Monday Night Football 87 times with a 55-32 record, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Monday night wins in NFL history. A win over Washington would be San Francisco's 56th and would give the 49ers the outright record. It is a fitting subplot for Alumni Weekend: a franchise built on Monday night stages, one win from owning the night entirely.
What decides it on Monday
For Washington to pull the upset that 51 of 52 experts say is not coming, the formula has to start with Daniels' legs. His 103 rushing yards against the Giants are the one element of this matchup that can stress even a defense ranked near the top of the league in points allowed, because a quarterback who extends plays turns San Francisco's pass rush — five sacks in Seattle — from a weapon into a wager. Washington also has to finish: the Giants game was lost as much in game management as in execution, and a team that cannot close a 14-point lead cannot afford a single sloppy sequence against an opponent this balanced.
For San Francisco, the assignment is simpler and harder at the same time: protect the football. The Seattle win featured three 49ers turnovers, and that is the one habit that keeps an overmatched visitor alive for four quarters. If Purdy plays a clean game and the defense hunts the way it did in Seattle, the experts' near-unanimity will look like an understatement. If San Francisco gives Daniels short fields and extra possessions, Monday night could get uncomfortably interesting — which, for a neutral audience, is the best possible outcome. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN and ABC. For more from Week 6 and the rest of the league, head to our NFL hub and the Sports desk.
