Cowboys Lead the Bucs 10-7 at Halftime After Jalon Daniels’ 11-Minute Answer Drive

The undrafted rookie opened his second career start a perfect 8-for-8 and turned a 10:58 grinder into a tying touchdown. Dallas nudged back ahead before the break — but the 0-4 Bucs are very much in this game.

The Short Version

The undrafted rookie just went toe-to-toe with the Cowboys for nearly 11 minutes, and Tampa Bay is very much alive. As of 6:40 p.m. PT, the Dallas Cowboys lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10-7 at halftime in a Thursday night game that has already gone off-script. Jalon Daniels, making his second career start in place of the injured Baker Mayfield, opened a perfect 8-for-8 and engineered a 15-play, 73-yard, 10:58 drive that tied the game 7-7. Dallas answered with a late field goal before the break. But nobody who watched that first half is looking at the 0-4 Bucs the way they did at kickoff.

01 The 11-minute answer

Let’s appreciate what Tampa Bay’s first drive actually was. Dallas had just marched 70 yards in nine plays for a Javonte Williams touchdown — a statement opening drive, the exact kind that can end a Thursday night game before it starts. The Bucs got the ball back, and their undrafted rookie quarterback responded with the most composed drive of the young season: 15 plays, 73 yards, 10 minutes and 58 seconds off the clock. Daniels completed all eight of his passes for 49 yards on the drive and added 11 rushing yards on two carries, per NBC Sports. The drive ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Bucky Irving, who dove toward the pylon to break the plane and tie the game 7-7, as Fox Sports described it.

Here’s the part Dallas coaches will be furious about: the Cowboys gave that drive away as much as Tampa earned it. The Bucs converted three third downs, and Dallas committed three defensive penalties along the way. The killer was DaRon Bland’s defensive holding on a third down — a flag that wiped out a Shemar James sack and handed Tampa an automatic first down instead of forcing a punt. Shavon Revel was later flagged for illegal contact downfield on Tez Johnson. That’s three free first downs for a rookie quarterback on a short week. You cannot survive that in this league, and the Bucs immediately proved it.

02 Dallas struck first — and it looked easy

Before Daniels’ answer, the script was going exactly as the 8.5-point spread suggested. Dallas took the opening kickoff and carved up Tampa’s defense on a 9-play, 70-yard march. The drive’s signature sequence was back-to-back 21-yard gains — first a Javonte Williams run, then a George Pickens catch — that flipped the field in two snaps. Williams capped it with a 1-yard touchdown run. It was clean, efficient, and ominous: the Cowboys’ offense, coming off a 34-30 comeback win at Houston where Dak Prescott threw for 335 yards, picked up right where it left off.

And yet. The Bucs’ defense responded by forcing a Dallas punt on the Cowboys’ next possession, getting the ball back to Daniels with most of the second quarter left. Through the first half, Tampa’s maligned defense — missing Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib), Benjamin Morrison (quad) and SirVocea Dennis (ankle/foot) — has bent without breaking. That was the plan coming in: Tampa ranks among the league’s better units against the pass and the run despite the 0-4 record, per SI’s game preview. Keeping Dallas to 10 first-half points, given the personnel gaps, is a win for the Bucs.

03 The numbers at the break

The halftime box score tells a strange story. Dak Prescott is 9-for-20 for 114 yards — under 50 percent, no touchdowns, and notably off-target on a night he was expected to feast. Jalon Daniels is 10-for-13 for 57 yards and a touchdown, with zero interceptions and 12 rushing yards on three carries. The rookie has completed a higher percentage of his passes and protected the football better. Javonte Williams has 7 carries for 32 yards and the game’s first touchdown.

None of this is predictive — Prescott has shredded second halves all season, and the Cowboys’ receiving corps hasn’t needed many catches to be lethal — but it’s remarkable. Tampa’s entire game plan is built on exactly this: steal possessions with long drives, don’t give Dallas short fields, and let the rookie play within the offense. Daniels threw two interceptions in his first start last week against Green Bay; tonight he has played mistake-free football through two quarters. If he keeps that up, the second half becomes a real football game instead of the coronation the spread implied.

04 The backdrop: injuries on both sides

The context around this game is a casualty report. For Tampa, the headline hasn’t changed: Baker Mayfield is out for the second straight game with the dislocated right thumb he suffered in Week 3 against Minnesota, still pushing to beat the minimum three-week recovery timeline. The Bucs are also down Winfield, Morrison and Dennis on defense. For Dallas, the night took a turn hours before kickoff when cornerback Joey Porter Jr. — acquired from the Steelers in an Oct. 1 trade, and fresh off his Cowboys debut against Houston — was ruled out with an illness after arriving at the facility very sick, per NFL Media’s Jane Slater, and was sent home. Cobie Durant was already out, which has pushed DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel and elevated corner Reddy Steward into bigger roles.

Dallas did get reinforcements: left guard Tyler Smith was activated from injured reserve on Thursday, a move we covered earlier today, and the Cowboys elevated Steward and Juanyeh Thomas from the practice squad. Tampa, meanwhile, elevated quarterback Easton Stick and defensive back J.J. Roberts. It’s a war of attrition on a short week, and so far the team with the rookie quarterback is holding up better than the one with all the talent.

05 What the second half needs

Three things decide the second half. First, Dallas has to stop the self-inflicted wounds: three defensive penalties on one drive is how underdogs stay alive, and the Cowboys’ reshuffled secondary has to settle in. Second, Tampa has to keep Daniels clean and out of third-and-long — the rookie’s composure has been real, but Dallas will dial up pressure and dare him to make a mistake, and his two interceptions last week are the blueprint for how this flips. Third, the running game: Williams has been effective for Dallas, and Bucky Irving (241 rushing yards coming into tonight) is Tampa’s path to bleeding more clock and keeping Prescott on the sideline.

Kickoff was 8:15 p.m. ET from AT&T Stadium. Prime Video carries the national broadcast for the fifth straight season, with FOX simulcasting in-market — WTVT in Tampa, KDFW in Dallas-Fort Worth. Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit are on the call, with Kaylee Hartung on the sideline.
