Scream's Hank Loomis Is Gone — C.W. Morgan Dies at 72

Born Curtis Wade Morgan in Bisbee, Arizona, he died Aug. 30 in Los Angeles. The medical examiner's case is still open, but police say it appears to be natural causes.

The Short Version

  • C.W. Morgan, best known as Hank Loomis — the father of Ghostface killer Billy Loomis — in Wes Craven's Scream (1996), has died. He was 72.
  • Medical examiner records reviewed by TMZ and USA TODAY show he died Sunday, Aug. 30, in a bathroom in Los Angeles; the case is listed as open and deferred, and no official cause of death has been released.
  • A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told TMZ the death appears to have been from natural causes.
  • Morgan was born Curtis Wade Morgan in Bisbee, Arizona, and built a career from a first gig at 37 in 1991 to one of the most consequential supporting roles in horror history.

C.W. Morgan never needed more than a few minutes on screen to make horror history. The actor, born Curtis Wade Morgan in Bisbee, Arizona, has died at 72 — playing Hank Loomis, the blustering attorney dad who showed up to defend his son Billy in Wes Craven's Scream, and in doing so became one of the most quoted supporting players in the entire franchise.

TMZ first reported the news on Thursday, citing Los Angeles County medical examiner records showing that Morgan died Sunday, Aug. 30, in Los Angeles. The records indicate he died in a bathroom, TMZ reported, and his cause and manner of death remain listed as unclear. USA TODAY independently obtained the same medical examiner records on Oct. 8 and reported the case status as open and deferred pending further investigation. An official cause of death has not been released.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told TMZ that Morgan's death appears to have been from natural causes. USA TODAY said it had reached out to both the LAPD and the Los Angeles Fire Department for comment.

Morgan was a late bloomer even by Hollywood standards. Born June 8, 1954, in Bisbee, Arizona — a former copper-mining town tucked into the Mule Mountains near the Mexican border — he didn't earn his first onscreen credit until 1991, when he was 37, appearing in two episodes of the NBC talk-radio drama Midnight Caller. The following year he starred in the TV movie The Last of His Tribe, and in 1995 he turned up in an episode of the animated sci-fi series Æon Flux.

Then came 1996 and the role that would define him. In Scream, Morgan played Hank Loomis, a prominent Woodsboro lawyer — and the father of Billy Loomis, played by Skeet Ulrich, who turned out to be one of the two Ghostface killers. Hank's biggest scene is pure parental bluster: cops are interrogating his son about the Woodsboro murders, and Hank storms in to vouch for him, all righteous indignation, never suspecting for a second that Billy is exactly what the police think he might be. It's a small part and a perfect one — the oblivious authority figure, played completely straight, which is exactly what makes it land.

The character mattered more than the screen time suggested. In the mythology of Scream, Hank Loomis had a secret affair with Maureen Prescott — the mother of Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. The affair broke up the Loomis family, and Billy blamed it, and his mother, for everything — the wound that metastasized into Ghostface. Morgan returned for a brief flashback cameo in Scream 3 (2000), when that backstory came fully into focus.

That cameo marked one of Morgan's final acting credits. He never chased the spotlight afterward; over the years he surfaced on social media with snapshots of his life — selfies, opinions, the occasional misadventure — more character than celebrity. His daughter, Renata Macfie, shared an emotional tribute on Facebook the day he died, writing about their "Mulholland drives and our Starbucks outings" and the poorly timed jokes she said she inherited from him. A friend, Paul Codiga, remembered him as "a devoted father to Renata Macfie, a brilliant actor, a loving friend and an incredible writer."

It's worth noting how the news traveled: Morgan died in late August, but the story didn't break until October, when the medical examiner records surfaced. For an actor whose most famous role is frozen in 1996 amber, the quiet two months feel oddly fitting — Hank Loomis never needed the spotlight either.

Scream endures because every piece of it is load-bearing — including the dad who shows up for one scene and defends the monster. The franchise has run for three decades on the strength of its ensemble, and Morgan's Hank is the franchise's great what-if: the decent man whose secret helped create a killer. That's a lot of weight for a handful of scenes, and Morgan carried it.

Funeral arrangements have not been publicly announced. Hollywood keeps turning, and out here in the desert the entertainment machine rolls on — from Metallica's first Sphere weekend to John Mayer's 2027 residency announcement — but today the marquee is Hank Loomis's.
