F1 Confirms Its Finale: Las Vegas Opens a Closing Triple-Header Through Qatar and Abu Dhabi

Formula 1 says the 2026 season still ends as scheduled — Las Vegas, then Qatar, then Abu Dhabi — pushing back on the doubts raised by the Middle East war and making the Las Vegas Grand Prix the start of the title run-in.

Six races to go, and the championship still ends where the calendar always said it would — starting in Las Vegas

Formula 1 intends to finish its 2026 season exactly as scheduled: a closing triple-header that begins in Las Vegas and then travels to Qatar and Abu Dhabi, according to reporting by ESPN on October 15, echoed by TSN's account of the same position. The confirmation matters because the final two rounds have spent months under a cloud. The Middle East war forced real changes to this calendar earlier in the year, and the question hanging over the run-in was whether the Gulf races would survive to the end of the season — or whether the championship would be rerouted at the last moment.

The sport's leadership has now said, in public, that the plan holds. F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali confirmed the calendar, stating that the last two Grands Prix will be in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, as ESPN and TSN both reported. F1 has been in contact with authorities in both Gulf countries through the decision, and with six races remaining, the official position as of October 15 is that the season ends as printed. For Las Vegas, the immediate consequence is status: the Las Vegas Grand Prix is no longer simply a glamorous late-season stop. It is the opening race of the title run-in — the first leg of a three-race sequence that decides the championship — and it keeps that status precisely because the two races after it are still on.

Why this was ever in doubt

To understand the relief in today's confirmation, remember what already happened to this calendar. Earlier this year, F1 cancelled the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix outright and cancelled the Bahrain Grand Prix in its April slot amid the Middle East war. The Bahrain race was subsequently relocated — staged in Malaysia earlier this month — while the Saudi race was simply dropped. A season that had already lost one Gulf race entirely and moved another across a continent had every reason to treat its remaining Gulf dates as provisional, and the paddock knew it.

The deadline was public, too. Audi team principal Mattia Binotto said on September 24 in Baku that mid-October was, in the F1 Commission's discussions, the “last call” for a decision on the finale. That framing turned this week into a genuine checkpoint: if the Gulf races were going to move, this was when the sport would have to say so, because teams, broadcasters, freight and tens of thousands of travelling fans cannot improvise a season finale. The answer that arrived at the deadline is that nothing moves.

The backup plan that stays in the drawer

There was a contingency, and it was more than a rumour. Italy's Imola circuit has been preparing grandstands as a stand-in option, in case the Gulf races were called off. Under that scenario, the two Middle East races would have been replaced by a single Imola round, with one event dropped from the calendar altogether — a shorter, stranger end to the season, and a championship decided on a compressed schedule in Italy rather than across three night races on two continents. F1 has pushed back on confirming anything beyond the current plan, and as of today the Gulf races remain intact unless the sport says otherwise. Imola's preparations now stand as insurance that was bought and, on current evidence, will not be claimed.

That restraint in F1's messaging is itself part of the story. Rather than declaring the matter closed forever, the sport has held a consistent line — the calendar is the calendar until it is announced otherwise — while Domenicali's confirmation gives teams and fans the certainty Binotto's deadline demanded. Both things can be true: the finale is confirmed, and a sport that has already relocated one race this year knows better than to promise that circumstances can never change.

What it means for Las Vegas

For this city, the confirmation locks in the best version of the Las Vegas Grand Prix's role. A finale sequence that runs Las Vegas, Qatar, Abu Dhabi means the championship's decisive stretch begins on the Strip — with the title fight guaranteed to still be live when the cars arrive, because the two rounds that follow it are the sport's traditional deciders. Promoters, hotels and broadcasters can now sell the race honestly for what it is: not a standalone spectacle, but the first act of the ending. It also means the logistical caravan that follows — teams and freight moving from Nevada to the Gulf within days — proceeds as planned, a detail that matters to everyone scheduling around the tightest turnaround on the calendar.

Six races remain. The next checkpoint is the track itself, and the championship now has a fixed map to its conclusion: Las Vegas first, then Qatar, then Abu Dhabi under the lights to close the year.
