Friday's Game Drop Is Stacked: Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Leads the Oct. 9 Releases

Capcom's $29.99 expansion adds the snowy Norgan region, 12 dungeons, and the series' Nintendo debut — joined Friday by a cardboard boomer shooter, a blackjack deckbuilder's console launch, and more.

The Short Version

  • Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen — Capcom's paid expansion — launches Friday, Oct. 9 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch 2 for $29.99 ($49.99 bundle with the base game). It adds the snowy Norgan region, a new story about the Fallen Dragon, 12 dungeons, and new character creator options.
  • Also out Friday: Paperhead (cardboard boomer shooter on Steam), Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers (acclaimed blackjack deckbuilder launching on PS5 and Switch), Sesame Street: Friends & Fun, and Horse Club: Ride West.
  • Permafrost lands on Steam Friday and is on NVIDIA's October GeForce NOW onboarding list — with the usual caveat that cloud availability can trail the store release by days.
  • Review embargo for Dark Arisen lifted Oct. 7: an early fan-compiled roundup put it at 88 on OpenCritic, with no score below 8 in the wave so far.

Thursday was the week to watch for game launches, but Friday is the day that matters for RPG players. Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen drops Oct. 9 — the paid expansion to the 2024 action RPG — and it's arriving with an unusual amount of gravity for an add-on: a brand-new region, a new story campaign, a dozen dungeons, and the first time a Dragon's Dogma game has ever appeared on a Nintendo platform. Around it, Friday's slate fills in with a cardboard first-person shooter, a blackjack deckbuilder going console, and a couple of family picks. We verified every date below against at least two release trackers before writing a word of this.

Dark Arisen goes north — literally

The headline addition is Norgan, a frozen northern region that the base game only ever hinted at. Director Kento Kinoshita — who directed the original Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen as well — revealed at Capcom's June 2026 Spotlight that the expansion's story follows Eir as she pursues the Fallen Dragon — as Capcom stated in the new overview trailer, "another Arisen, one you were never meant to encounter," a figure that "should never have been." That's about as Dragon's Dogma as a plot hook gets: the games have always been about what happens when the world's rules get bent, and the expansion is leaning all the way into the mystery of what came after the Red Dragon Grigori.

Beyond the story, the content pile is real. Capcom is selling this as 12 new dungeon challenges — the Lost Rites challenges — plus a relic gear system for endgame loot, new monsters, and an expanded character creator with new hairstyles and tattoos. There's also a free update rolling out to all players whether they buy the expansion or not, and this is where Capcom is clearly paying back goodwill: Hard Mode is free, along with a reusable Eternal Ferrystone, more save slots, more weapon skill slots (up from four to six), and adjustments to the divisive Dragonsplague condition. We flagged Dark Arisen earlier in our Nintendo coverage, but the details make the case much louder.

The money part: $29.99, and the Switch 2 surprise

The pricing is straightforward, and refreshingly fair. The expansion is $29.99 for anyone who already owns Dragon's Dogma 2, and a $49.99 bundle packs the base game and expansion together — per TalkEsport's weekly release list, which also confirms Friday's PS5 date. On Switch 2, the story is different: Dragon's Dogma 2 never shipped on the original Switch, so it arrives on Nintendo hardware for the first time Friday as a single package — base game plus Dark Arisen for $49.99, no standalone-expansion option. GameDaily and GamingBolt both confirm the full platform list: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Switch 2.

Timing-wise, note that PC and Xbox unlocks are scheduled for 12:00 AM UTC on Oct. 9 — which means players in the Americas actually get in during the evening of Oct. 8, per ShowGamer's release guide. PS5 unlocks depend on your regional store timer, so check the countdown on your own store page. Steam's page, meanwhile, has shown some players an Oct. 8 listing — region quirks are normal for global unlocks.

And the early reviews are strong. The embargo lifted Oct. 7, and while we should treat any fan-compiled tally as a snapshot rather than gospel, the roundup circulating on X put Dark Arisen at 88 on OpenCritic and 89 on Metacritic (PC), with two 10s, a wall of 9s, and nobody below 8. IGN landed on 8, which for an expansion is a firm thumbs up. Capcom also dropped a new overview trailer narrated by Ron Perlman — yes, the War never changes guy himself — which feels exactly right for a game about dragons.

Indie corner: a cardboard shooter and a card shark

Friday's most interesting non-expansion release is Paperhead, a fast-paced boomer shooter from Paperhead te4m and HypeTrain Digital that's set in a world rendered entirely in papercraft — and then asks the game's central unsettling question: why is cardboard bleeding? GameRant's Oct. 6 preview described it as "Paper Mario got trapped in DOOM," and the hook is a pencil mechanic that lets you draw bombs and functional doors into the environment on top of a shotgun-and-stomp combat foundation. The full game was originally slated for Sept. 18, then pushed three weeks to Oct. 9 for extra polish. SteamDB lists its store release for Oct. 9, and PlayAsia has it dated the same day. It's single-player only, Steam Deck Verified, and pricing wasn't set at the time of writing — one to watch, especially with Halloween three weeks out.

Then there's Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers, which is arguably the most proven thing launching Friday. The blackjack-inspired roguelike deckbuilder from New Zealand studio Purple Moss Collectors and Yogscast Games grossed over $1 million in its first month on PC after its August 2024 Steam launch, and now it's hitting PS5 and Nintendo Switch on Oct. 9. If you missed it on Steam: you build absurd hands from decks full of tarot cards, business cards, loyalty punch cards, and hall passes — suits are gone, synergy is everything — and battle your way through tavern floors against the most corrupt high-rollers. The console versions ship with everything from July's massive 2.0 "Doubling Down" update on day one: four new floors, 50+ Lucky Charms, custom runs, and a daily run mode. Capsule Computers and GoNintendo both confirmed the Oct. 9 console date, and TalkEsport has it on Friday's PS5 list. This one's the safest bet on the board.

The rest of the Friday slate

Permafrost hits Steam on Friday, and NVIDIA has it on the October GeForce NOW onboarding schedule — confirmed by Undercode News, Neowin, and GamingOnLinux. One honest caveat: NVIDIA explicitly says its listed dates are store release dates, and cloud onboarding happens throughout the week after release, so the GFN version might trail by a few days. Don't plan your Friday night around it; check the GFN app.

The family picks are Sesame Street: Friends & Fun and Horse Club: Ride West, both dated Oct. 9 on TalkEsport's PS5 list and DLCCompare's weekly roundup. If you're buying for kids, those are your Friday.

And for the cloud-curious, it's worth noting October's GeForce NOW slate is genuinely stacked — Gears of War: E-Day and Star Wars: Galactic Racer landed earlier in the week, and Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival hit Thursday — which pairs nicely with what's happening on Game Pass this month. Between Friday's releases and the cloud library filling out, there's no bad platform to be on this weekend. Unless your platform is I've already bought Dark Arisen and now I need 80 more hours. Nobody can help you there.
