FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026 — Friday night college football is its own genre. It's not Saturday — it's the appetizer, the warm-up act, the thing you put on while the real main events simmer. But every once in a while the appetizer is a full meal. Tonight's five-game slate is one of the better Fridays of the season: an ACC clash in Louisville to open, a ranked Big Ten road trip at 9, and a genuine top-10 host in Provo to close the night. Here's the whole board, window by window.
01 The Opener: Florida State at Louisville — 7 PM ET, ESPN
If you've been sleeping on Florida State since the 1-2 start, wake up. The Seminoles are coming off a statement win against Virginia and are looking for their third straight win tonight in Louisville. That's not nothing — a team that started 1-2 and figured it out in October is exactly the kind of team that ruins somebody's November.
Louisville, meanwhile, is living the cruelest version of football: back-to-back losses to Wake Forest and NC State by a combined six points. Two games, six points, zero wins. That's the kind of skid that either breaks a team or forges one, and there's no in-between. They get the home crowd at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium and a prime ESPN window to prove which one they are. FSU rolling in with momentum against a Louisville team that knows it let two wins slip away? This is sneaky-good television. Set the DVR for the late window and watch this one live.

02 The 9 PM Tripleheader: Iowa-Washington Leads, Two Late-Nighters Follow
Nine o'clock Eastern brings three games at once, and let's be honest about the hierarchy. The one that matters is No. 20 Iowa at Washington, 9 PM ET on FOX — the Hawkeyes heading to the Pacific Northwest to bounce back from last week's loss to Ohio State. Iowa at No. 20 in the latest AP Top 25, on the road, in Seattle, after a loss. That's a test. Washington at home in October is never a vacation, and Iowa's season — the one that still has real upward mobility — needs this game a lot more than the record might suggest.
The other two 9 PM kickoffs are your background viewing. Wyoming at San Jose State (CBS Sports Network, CEFCU Stadium) is Mountain West after dark — weird things happen in these games, and weird is fun. Washington State at Utah State (The CW, Maverik Stadium) is the same energy: two programs with nothing to lose and a national TV window to be chaotic in. Keep one on the second screen. You won't regret it.

03 The Nightcap: Iowa State at No. 8 BYU — 10:15 PM ET, ESPN
Now we're talking. Iowa State at No. 8 BYU, 10:15 PM ET on ESPN from LaVell Edwards Stadium is the best game of the night and it isn't close. The Cyclones are rolling behind running back Aiden Flora, who hung a five-touchdown game on West Virginia last week — five. Against BYU's unbeaten defense. In Provo. At night.
The Cougars, No. 8 in the AP Top 25, are one of the season's quiet success stories. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has just six touchdown passes through four games but has scored four times on the ground — this is a team that wins with balance and defense, not fireworks. Iowa State is looking to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season, and doing it on the road in one of the loudest environments in the country. Late-night ESPN, ranked host, unbeaten record on the line, a running back who just scored five times: this is appointment viewing. If you watch one game tonight, it's this one.

04 What Friday Night Actually Decides
Here's what I like about this slate: it isn't filler. BYU's unbeaten record genuinely goes on trial in Provo — lose to Iowa State and the Cougars go from playoff dark horse to just another good team with a November problem. Florida State's revival gets its first real road test: winning at home is one thing, winning in Louisville against a desperate team is how 1-2 starts turn into 9-3 seasons instead of 6-6 ones.
And Iowa-Washington is the sneaky important one. The Hawkeyes at No. 20 have margin to climb — the top of the Big Ten is crowded but not settled — and a road win in Seattle after the Ohio State loss changes the entire shape of their October. Lose, and they're the team that couldn't recover. These are the games you point to in December when you're arguing about who belonged.
05 How to Watch It All
The honest viewing plan: FSU-Louisville live at 7. Flip to Iowa-Washington at 9 with the Mountain West games on the second screen. Then settle in for Iowa State-BYU at 10:15 and don't move. And when the night ends, tomorrow's full Saturday slate is waiting — because Week 6 isn't messing around.
