Apple TV Renews ‘Imperfect Women’ for Season 2 — and Hands the Show to Kerry Washington’s Eleanor

Apple TV renewed the psychological thriller for a second season on October 5 — then reinvented it: Season 2 is a spinoff-style continuation built around Kerry Washington's Eleanor, relocating from Los Angeles to Martha's Vineyard with an original story that leaves the novel behind.

Imperfect Women was supposed to be a one-and-done. Apple TV has changed its mind. The streamer renewed the psychological thriller for a second season, announced October 5, 2026 — and the new run is less a continuation than a reinvention: a spinoff-style pivot that hands the entire show to Kerry Washington’s Eleanor, relocating from Los Angeles to the affluent Black enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, according to The Wrap, TV Tonight and Blex Media.

The pivotFrom limited series to Eleanor’s show

When the first season debuted in March 2026, Imperfect Women was sold as a limited series — a closed-ended adaptation of Araminta Hall’s novel about a crime that shatters the decades-long friendship of three women: Eleanor (Washington), Mary (Elisabeth Moss) and Nancy (Kate Mara). Memorable TV reported the renewal reverses that billing “after the show generated enough audience interest to justify continuation.”

There is no second Imperfect Women book, so Season 2 moves entirely beyond Hall’s source material, built on an original story, according to Blex Media. Memorable TV noted the first season more or less exhausted the novel — shifting Eleanor to the foreground means the new run starts fresh. The official logline: “Eleanor (Washington) returns to her hometown roots in the affluent black enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, only to find that beneath its idyllic surface, lie secrets and scandals that threaten to upend everything she thought she knew about her past,” per the official logline cited by The Wrap and TV Tonight.

The Vineyard setting is doing real thematic work. Blex Media wrote that setting Eleanor’s return in a historically significant Black community “gives Washington’s character a setting and cultural specificity the original season’s Los Angeles backdrop didn’t carry” — and continues a pattern of Black actresses parlaying strong limited-series ensemble performances into expanded, character-driven spinoffs once a show finds an audience.

The starKerry Washington steps to the front

Washington isn’t just returning in front of the camera — she’s taking the wheel. She reprises her role as Eleanor and executive produces through her Simpson Street banner alongside Pilar Savone, according to Blex Media and Geektown. Elisabeth Moss, her Season 1 co-lead, returns as an executive producer only, TV Tonight reported — through Love & Squalor Pictures alongside Lindsey McManus, the company that initially optioned Hall’s book, per Geektown.

“We were thrilled to see how deeply these women and their stories resonated with audiences around the world, and I’m so excited to step back into Eleanor’s shoes,” Washington said in the announcement, as carried by The Wrap and TV Tonight. “She’s intelligent and strong, but she also finds herself navigating complicated and sometimes messy situations. We at Simpson Street along with our incredible partners at Apple and Love & Squalor Pictures can’t wait to explore a fresh chapter for her and share where this story takes us next.”

The streamer is all-in on the pivot. “After a wildly entertaining first season, driven by the performances of Kerry, Lizzie and Kate, we jumped at the opportunity to expand the world of ‘Imperfect Women’ through Kerry’s fan favourite character of Eleanor,” Apple TV head of programming Matt Cherniss said, as reported by TV Tonight. “Annie and Justin’s thrilling new story felt like an exciting and natural next chapter. We can’t wait for fans to experience it.”

The teamNew co-showrunner, familiar producers

Series creator Annie Weisman, who wrote the original eight episodes, returns to create, co-showrun and executive produce Season 2 alongside Justin Hillian — whose credits include The Chi and Snowfall — joining for the second season, according to The Wrap and Memorable TV. The season is a co-production between 20th Television and Apple Studios.

Further casting details beyond Washington have yet to be announced, Geektown noted — Apple has confirmed the new story but not an episode count or a filming start date. Blex Media reported that Leslie Odom Jr. and Sheryl Lee Ralph are expected to return, and that it remains unclear whether the move to Martha’s Vineyard means the show will continue filming in Los Angeles, where Season 1 shot, a question The Wrap also raised.

One thing the renewal confirms: the decision was audience-driven. Memorable TV wrote that “the renewal confirms that audience appetite, rather than critical consensus, is driving the decision” — the announcement described the original limited series as a global hit, though without providing viewing figures, as Geektown pointed out.

The patternA limited series that refused to end

Imperfect Women joins a growing club of “limited” series that audiences refused to let stay limited. The first season drew comparisons to prestige domestic thrillers like Big Little Lies and The Undoing, though critics were divided on its execution, according to Memorable TV. Washington and Moss had publicly encouraged fans to push for a continuation, citing unresolved tension between their characters — a campaign that evidently worked.

For Eleanor, the move to Martha’s Vineyard is a homecoming with teeth. She left; now she returns to hometown roots and finds the past she thought she knew is something else entirely. It’s the classic thriller engine — the idyllic surface, the rot underneath — and Apple is betting Kerry Washington can carry it alone. Season 1 of Imperfect Women is streaming now on Apple TV.
