Messi Scores Twice in Four Minutes as Inter Miami Win 3-1 at Atlanta United

Germán Berterame's header put Inter Miami ahead on the stroke of half-time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and then Lionel Messi took the game away: two solo goals in four second-half minutes, his 24th and 25th of the season, sealed a third straight Miami win before Fafà Picault's late penalty gave Atlanta a consolation.

The Short Version

For 45 minutes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Atlanta United held the most dangerous attack in Major League Soccer scoreless. Then Germán Berterame headed in the opener in the final minute of the first half, and after the break Lionel Messi did what Lionel Messi does: two goals in four minutes, both of them solo productions, both of them finished with his left foot, and Inter Miami cruised to a 3-1 victory. The Associated Press report of the match, carried by TSN, laid the night out in one sentence — Messi scored two second-half goals four minutes apart after a first-half assist, and Miami won their third straight game. Everything else about the evening was detail around that familiar shape.

The first half had been genuinely even, as Inter Miami CF's own match recap concedes: an open start, chances building at both ends, and Miami's attack only gradually taking over. Messi came closest before the opener with a 41st-minute free kick that Atlanta goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos tipped away at the top corner, a save the club's report noted on its way to the goal that followed. On 45 minutes Luis Suárez crossed pinpoint from the right and Berterame headed home from inside the area for his ninth goal in his first 26 MLS appearances, per The Associated Press. Suárez's assist was his 11th of the season, and Messi was credited with the secondary assist on the play — his 15th of the campaign, which Inter Miami CF's recap pointed out makes him the first player in MLS history to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive seasons. Even his quiet contributions keep setting records.

Four minutes that ended the argument

Atlanta's best moment of the second half came early, when Dayne St. Clair kept out a shot from Miguel Almirón and briefly preserved a one-goal game. It did not stay one goal for long. On 56 minutes Messi picked the ball up down the right, drove infield, exchanged passes with Berterame on the edge of the area, danced past a defender and fired low past Hoyos — the sequence Inter Miami CF's report describes as a quick give-and-go that broke him into the left side of the box for a grounded left-footed finish, his 24th goal of the season, with Berterame's assist his 10th. Four minutes later Suárez sent him free on the break with an outside-of-the-boot pass, as Atlanta United's own match recap tells it, and Messi dribbled past another defender and dinked the ball into the right side of the net for 3-0. Two goals, four minutes, and a stadium that had spent the first half believing sat back and appreciated the show — reports of the second goal noted cheers from both sets of supporters, which tells you exactly what kind of goals these were.

The rest was management and near-misses. Atlanta United's recap records that Miami thought they had a penalty for handball on 69 minutes, only for video review to rule the play back for a foul, and that the home side, pushing higher and higher, left themselves open to counters they were fortunate not to concede from again. Matt Edwards hit the post for Atlanta on 86 minutes. Then substitute Fafà Picault, on against his former club, earned a penalty in the 88th minute and drove it hard and low a minute later; St. Clair got a glove to it and could not keep it out. The Associated Press counted two saves for St. Clair and two for Hoyos on a night when the goalkeepers' numbers were never going to be the story.

The numbers Messi is now chasing

The individual arithmetic, all of it from The Associated Press report, is starting to read like a season review written in October. Messi's 25 goals lead the league by six in the Golden Boot race. His 15 assists tie LAFC's Son Heung-min for the league lead. He has registered a goal contribution in 13 straight matches, and his 40 goal contributions sit nine short of Carlos Vela's single-season record of 49, set with LAFC in 2019 — with four matches remaining for Miami to play. Messi and Josef Martínez, once of this same Atlanta club, are the only players in league history to score at least 25 goals in a regular season twice. There was a layer of personal history in the building too: this was Messi's first visit to Mercedes-Benz Stadium since the 2026 World Cup semifinal in July, when his two late assists propelled Argentina past England — a night Atlanta's crowd remembered, and one he has now followed with a fond memory of his own making.

Miami's win, their third in a row, sends them to Red Bull New York next Saturday with the league's most in-form player in the form of his MLS life. Atlanta, who drew 2-2 at Miami to start September and could not live with the same opponent six weeks later, stay home to host Chicago Fire next Saturday, October 24. The gap between those two fixtures is the gap between these two teams right now: one is tuning up for a postseason behind a 39-year-old who remains the best player in the league, and the other is looking for answers against everyone else. On Saturday night in Atlanta, there was really only ever one story, and he wore the captain's armband for the visitors.
