Seven Points From One Line: Perfetti, Scheifele and Connor Power Jets Past Wild 5-2

Winnipeg's top line combined for seven points — two goals from Cole Perfetti, three points from Mark Scheifele and two from Kyle Connor — as the Jets beat Minnesota 5-2 on Tuesday despite two goals from Kirill Kaprizov.

When a team's top line is feeling it, hockey gets very simple and very unfair at the same time. The Winnipeg Jets watched their No. 1 line run the whole show on Tuesday night, beating the Minnesota Wild 5-2 at home behind a combined seven points from Cole Perfetti, Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor — the kind of night that reminds everyone why coaches spend all summer dreaming about exactly this trio clicking at once.

Perfetti led the way with two goals, including the go-ahead score late in the second period. Scheifele finished with a goal and two assists. Connor added a goal and an assist. Add in two assists from defenseman Neal Pionk, and Winnipeg's best players were, almost to a man, its best players on the scoresheet. That sounds obvious. It is amazing how rarely it actually works out that cleanly.

A first period that kept trading punches

The game needed less than two minutes to announce itself. Perfetti opened the scoring just 1:50 in, deflecting a shot from Pionk to put Winnipeg up 1-0 — an early goal that usually settles a home crowd in nicely. Minnesota, to its credit, did not fold. Kirill Kaprizov, who would go on to score both Wild goals on the night, tied it 1-1 on a rebound with 11:13 left in the first period.

Then came a wild little sequence late in the period that summed up the whole evening. With 2:06 left in the first, Scheifele ripped a power-play one-timer for his first goal of the season and a 2-1 Jets lead. The celebration had barely finished when Kaprizov redirected a shot past the Jets just 44 seconds later to tie it 2-2. Two goals, two swings, forty-four seconds. If you blinked during that stretch, you missed the game's entire personality: Winnipeg pushing, Minnesota punching right back, and nobody blinking.

Perfetti breaks it open, Connor closes it

The difference, in the end, was that the Jets' stars got the last word — twice. With 3:24 left in the second period, Perfetti scored his second of the night and fifth of the season, a power-play one-timer from the slot that stood up as the go-ahead goal and a 3-2 lead. It was a fitting reward for the line's best player on the night, and it changed the temperature of the third period completely: Minnesota now had to chase, and chasing this Jets team is a good way to get counterpunched.

Sure enough, the insurance arrived from the same neighborhood of the lineup. Connor scored on a wrist shot with 15:54 left in the third — his seventh goal of the season — to make it 4-2, and when Cole Koepke finished a 2-on-1 with 5:18 remaining, the game was over at 5-2. Three third-period storylines, all written by Winnipeg. Kaprizov's second goal, by the way, was his NHL-leading eighth of the season, which tells you something remarkable about the Wild's night: their best player was brilliant, scored twice, and it still was not close to enough.

The goaltending footnote that mattered

Quietly, the crease told its own story. Stuart Skinner made 19 saves on 21 shots for the Jets — not a heavy workload, but a steady one, and steadiness is all a team asks for on a night its top line is scoring five. At the other end, Calvin Pickard allowed five goals on 25 shots in his season debut for Minnesota, the kind of first outing a goaltender files under "burn the tape and move on," even if several of those goals came off plays no goalie was stopping.

There is also something to be said for how the Jets won the special-teams and situational battle within the game. Both of Perfetti's and Scheifele's momentum goals came on the power play — the first-period one-timer that briefly restored the lead, and the second-period strike that finally broke the 2-2 deadlock for good. A power play that converts in the moments that actually decide games is a different animal from one that pads numbers in blowouts, and Winnipeg's best players treated those two opportunities like the whole night depended on them. In a sense, it did: Minnesota never led at any point after Perfetti's second goal, and the longer the third period went, the more the Wild's comeback hopes rested on Kaprizov doing something spectacular one more time. Even for a player of his caliber, that is a heavy assignment three times in one evening.

The standings ripple is real, too. Winnipeg has now won four of its last five, and it did this one at home against a division rival that does not lose often — this was only the second regulation defeat of the season for the Wild. Those are the results that quietly shape a Central Division race in October, long before anyone is doing playoff math out loud. The Jets' top line will not combine for seven points every night. But on the nights it does, there may not be a line in the conference Winnipeg would trade it for.
