LAS VEGAS — John Mayer is coming back to Sphere, and this time he is bringing every version of himself. The seven-time Grammy winner announced Monday, September 28 that he will play six nights at the Las Vegas venue in April 2027 — April 8, 10, 11, 15, 17 and 18, all at 8 p.m. — with each show running three distinct configurations: solo, full band, and the John Mayer Trio, according to Consequence, Parade and the New York Post.
"Meet me where the light is… I'll be playing six nights at @spherevegas — solo, full band and trio," Mayer wrote in a joint Instagram post with the venue, adding: "You can sign up now for the Artist Presale for your first chance at tickets beginning next Wednesday, October 7 at 10 AM PT at johnmayer.com." VIP tickets and Vibee travel packages went on sale September 30 at 10 a.m. PT.
The three-configurations-per-night format is the detail that separates this from a standard residency announcement. The solo portion will lean mostly on acoustic guitar, with piano and electric guitar in the mix, per Consequence. The full-band set covers the catalogue's big-room material. And the John Mayer Trio — Mayer with Steve Jordan on drums and Pino Palladino on bass — brings the blues-rock power-trio mode that has been his most ferocious live configuration for two decades. A press release said the shows "will combine immersive sound, visual spectacle, and sensory feedback to make each show a unique, unforgettable celebration," per the Post.

He knows this room
This is Mayer's first Sphere run as a solo headliner, but it is not his first time on that stage. He performed 48 shows there with Dead & Company across 2024 and 2025, per the Post — a run that turned the Grateful Dead's catalogue into one of the most ambitious visual spectacles the venue has hosted, with the band's full-band improv riding the room's 160,000-square-foot interior display. He knows exactly what the building can do, and what it asks of a performer.
That history matters for the format choice. Dead & Company at Sphere was a band disappearing into a shared universe; Mayer at Sphere in 2027 is the opposite — one artist, three lineups, the whole building pointed at him. Metallica's 24-show Sphere residency, which opened October 1 and runs into March 2027, has already shown how the venue rewards acts that treat it as a second home.
The building has the receipts to justify the ambition. U2's UV Achtung Baby run — 40 shows, 663,000 tickets sold, $254 million gross — set the commercial bar for Sphere residencies, with Dead & Company's own 48-show Dead Forever run close behind at $132 million, per Billboard Boxscore data cited by the Las Vegas Advisor. Mayer has now played more Sphere shows than any headliner in the building's short history; in April, he finally gets to be the one the room is built around.
Mayer arrives in April with a head start on everyone: nobody has played more nights there.
Tickets, presales and the charity angle
Tickets start at $129, per Parade. The on-sale sequence: VIP ticket packages through Vibee and travel packages opened September 30; the artist presale — sign up at johnmayer.com — begins Wednesday, October 7 at 10 a.m. PT; the general on-sale follows Friday, October 9 at 10 a.m. PT via Ticketmaster, per Consequence and the Post.
There is also a charity lane: a limited number of tickets for each show will be auctioned, with 100% of proceeds benefiting Mayer's own Heart and Armor Foundation for veterans' health, per Consequence. It is the kind of detail that tends to get buried under presale codes, but it is worth naming — every night of the run carries a direct line to veterans' health funding.

The timing: a 20th anniversary and a busy fall
The announcement arrives in the 20th-anniversary year of Continuum, his third album — the record that carried Waiting on the World to Change, Gravity and Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, per Parade. Mayer marked the anniversary on Instagram, writing that the album "changed my life," and added: "You have to become different versions of yourself to create a lasting body of work." That line reads like a mission statement for a residency built on three different configurations a night.
He is not waiting until 2027 to play. He headlines Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on Friday, October 9, per the Post — one week after the Sphere general on-sale. The broader Sphere calendar around his dates is stacked: Metallica's run extends to March 13, 2027, the Eagles hold November 13 through January 23, the Backstreet Boys take December 26 through January 2, and Oprah's Aha shows land April 2–4, 2027 — one week before Mayer's opener, per the Post's Sphere rundown.

The practical notes: sign up for the artist presale at johnmayer.com before October 7 at 10 a.m. PT, or wait for the October 9 general on-sale via Ticketmaster. With tickets starting at $129 and six nights on the board, the Sphere's spring belongs to a guitar player who has already proven he can fill this particular room 48 times over.
Vegas residencies are stacking fast this fall — from LISA's six-night Colosseum run to gospel's first Strip residency — and our live desk is tracking every announcement.
