Liverpool Host Villarreal at Anfield as Champions League Matchday 3 Headlines Tuesday's Slate

The Champions League returns on Tuesday with nine league-phase matches, and Anfield gets one of the best of them: a perfect Liverpool side against the Villarreal team that just beat Napoli. In Paris, meanwhile, the night’s other giant tie needs no introduction.

The Champions League is back on Tuesday, and it is not easing anyone in. Nine league-phase matches fill the Matchday 3 schedule, and BBC Sport framed Tuesday as the competition’s return with nine matches on the night. Two of them carry the evening. In Paris, Paris Saint-Germain host Barcelona in the tie of the round — we published a dedicated preview of that one this morning, and it is worth your time before kickoff. And at Anfield, Liverpool welcome Villarreal in a meeting of two sides whose seasons in this competition are already bending in opposite directions: one perfect through two rounds, the other just off a win that kept its campaign honest.

Kickoff at Anfield is 12:00 p.m. PT / 3:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. in the UK. Radio Times lists Liverpool-Villarreal as Amazon Prime Video’s Tuesday top pick in the UK. In the United States, NBC Sports lists Paramount+ as the streaming home of the competition, with select games on CBS Sports Network.

What two rounds have already told us

The league phase does not forgive a slow start, because there is no group-stage cushion anymore — just one 36-team table, eight matches per club, and a cut line in three places. According to NBC Sports, the top eight finishers go straight into the last 16 as seeded teams, the next 16 are drawn into home-and-away playoff ties for the remaining last-16 places, and the bottom 12 see their European seasons end before February. Every October point is therefore a result now and a seeding argument later.

Liverpool have collected all six of theirs. The False 9’s table after Matchday 2 has Liverpool fifth on six points with a +4 goal difference, and NBC Sports’ results archive shows how they got there: a 2-1 home win over Atlético Madrid on Matchday 1, then a wild 6-3 win at LASK Linz on Matchday 2. The False 9 noted the flip side of that second result — Liverpool conceded three in Austria — the one loose thread in an otherwise ideal start. The False 9 also pointed out that in 2024/25, the first season of this format, the last top-eight place went at 16 points, so two more wins would put Liverpool most of the way to skipping the playoff round entirely.

Villarreal’s road has been bumpier. NBC Sports’ results show a 3-2 defeat at Borussia Dortmund on the opening matchday, followed by a 3-1 home win over Napoli on Matchday 2 that pulled them up to 14th on three points, per The False 9’s standings — the profile of a team that is dangerous in single games and punished when it opens up.

The Anfield factor, and Villarreal’s discipline

There is a reason broadcasters pay a premium for Anfield on a European night, and it is not nostalgia. The ground compresses games: visiting teams that plan to sit in and frustrate for an hour routinely discover that the crowd treats a goalless 60 minutes as a beginning rather than a problem. Liverpool have already beaten Spanish opposition at Anfield in this league phase — the 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid on Matchday 1 recorded by NBC Sports — and a second such win would tighten their grip on a top-eight track.

Villarreal, though, are close to the worst possible opponent for a team that wants an open game. The False 9’s matchday guide frames this tie around a Villarreal side that keeps its shape, defends its box in numbers and treats patience as a weapon rather than a weakness — the tactical discipline that has defined the club’s European runs for years. Their Matchday 2 result is the evidence: Napoli went to Spain and lost 3-1 to a side that waited for its moments and took them. Liverpool’s six goals in Linz say they can break a block down; the three they conceded say Villarreal will get chances to punish any carelessness when the game stretches. That tension — Liverpool’s volume against Villarreal’s economy — is the match.

Tuesday’s full slate

Anfield is one stop on a crowded night. The early window, at 9:45 a.m. PT, pairs Fenerbahçe with Slavia Prague and sends Borussia Dortmund to Sabah. The noon PT wave spreads across the continent: Roma host Slovan Bratislava, Porto welcome PSV Eindhoven, Manchester City face AEK Athens, Napoli go to Bodø/Glimt, and Stuttgart host Atlético Madrid. Above all of it sits Paris, where PSG and Barcelona — first and second per The False 9, both perfect and level on goal difference at +7 — play the game that will reorder the top of the table. Our dedicated PSG-Barcelona preview, published this morning, breaks that one down in full.

For Liverpool and Villarreal, the arithmetic is simpler than the occasion. A home win moves Liverpool to nine points from three and turns Matchday 4’s trip to Fenerbahçe into an opportunity rather than a necessity. Anything less, and Villarreal — disciplined, patient and already proven against Napoli — will have done exactly what they came to Anfield to do.
