Terry McLaurin Carted Off With Knee Injury, Ruled Out on Monday Night Football

Washington’s No. 1 receiver went down without contact in the first quarter at Levi’s Stadium, left on a cart with his left leg in an air cast, and was ruled out with a knee injury. The full extent is not yet confirmed — and for a 1-3-1 team, the wait for that update is now the whole season.

The Short Version

Washington’s Monday night turned in the first quarter at Levi’s Stadium, and not because of anything on the scoreboard. Terry McLaurin, the Washington Commanders’ No. 1 receiver, went down with a non-contact knee injury against the San Francisco 49ers, was carted off the field with his left leg in an air cast, and was ruled out for the rest of the game, as USA Today and Athlon Sports reported from Santa Clara. This game is still in progress — San Francisco led 13-3 in the second quarter — but for Washington, the result already feels secondary to the sight of its best offensive player leaving on a cart.

The injury happened on a third down in the first quarter. McLaurin was running a route, reached for his left knee as he went to the ground without contact, and stayed down. The cart came out, his left leg was placed in an air cast, and he was taken to the locker room. The Commanders ruled him out for the game with a knee injury. The full extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed; the team is expected to update his status after further evaluation, and nothing beyond that — no diagnosis, no timetable — has been reported. Anything more specific than that, at this point, would be guessing, and this is not a situation that calls for guessing.

One catch, and it was a big one

McLaurin’s night lasted barely a drive, but he had already made his mark on it. On Washington’s opening possession, Jayden Daniels found him down the right sideline for a 27-yard strike — the kind of explosive play this offense has been hunting for all season — and the drive ended in a 51-yard field goal from Drew Stevens that cut San Francisco’s early lead to 7-3. That one catch, for 27 yards, is McLaurin’s final line for the evening: one reception, 27 yards, and a season that now hangs on an evaluation nobody in Washington wanted to be waiting on in Week 6.

The timing could hardly be worse. McLaurin had only recently returned from a hamstring issue, and Washington’s receiving room was already stretched: Stefon Diggs came into Monday night banged up as well. The Commanders entered this game 1-3-1, with a lone win — the Week 3 upset of Seattle that stood as the biggest upset of the 2026 season — and a fresh memory of last week, when they let a 14-point fourth-quarter lead slip away and settled for a tie after Daniels was tackled in bounds in overtime as the clock ran out. A team that thin on margin does not have a spare No. 1 receiver. It does not, frankly, have a spare anything.

What Washington loses without him

Everything in this passing game bends toward McLaurin. He is the receiver defenses roll coverage to, the target Daniels trusts on money downs, and the player whose presence makes life possible for everyone else in the route tree. Losing him mid-game against a 5-0 San Francisco team is one problem; losing him for any stretch beyond Monday is a different and much larger one. Washington’s remaining receivers now have to win against a 49ers secondary that no longer has to choose where to help, and Daniels — who has already carried an outsized share of this offense through five games — has to carry more of it. Our first-half report from Levi’s has the full picture of how the game itself has unfolded, and our NFL front will carry the Commanders’ update when the team provides one.

There is a human layer here that the depth chart does not capture. McLaurin has been the constant through Washington’s lean years, quarterback changes, coaching changes and a 1-3-1 start that already had this season tilting. He had just worked his way back from the hamstring problem. To watch him grab his knee on a routine route — no hit, no collision, the kind of play he has run thousands of times — and leave in an air cast is the sort of scene that quiets a sideline, and it visibly did. A cart and an air cast are precautions as often as they are verdicts, and the honest position tonight is the narrow one: he is out for this game with a knee injury, the full extent is not yet confirmed, and the team is expected to update after evaluation.

What happens next

For the rest of Monday night, Washington plays on without him, down 13-3 as the second quarter wound down, against the NFC’s last unbeaten team. The Commanders will lean harder on Diggs and the run game and hope Daniels can manufacture the explosives that McLaurin usually provides. After that, everything waits on the medical update — the imaging, the evaluation, and the team’s own words, which are the only ones that will count. Previously will update this story when the Commanders provide that information, and the Stats Hub and team pages will reflect any roster moves that follow.
