Yousef Obeid's 20-yard field goal as time expired gave Missouri State a 24-21 win over Kennesaw State on Wednesday night — the Bears' first Conference USA victory, in new starting quarterback Henry Belin's 300-yard debut as the starter.

Midweek Conference USA football does not do scripts, so it writes its own. On Wednesday night in Springfield, Missouri State won its first Conference USA game the hardest way available: tied at 21 with six minutes left, a new quarterback under centre, and the whole thing riding on a final drive and a 20-yard kick at the gun. Yousef Obeid made it, the Bears beat Kennesaw State 24-21 at Robert W. Plaster Stadium, and a program playing its second season of FBS football finally has a conference win to put on the wall, the Springfield News-Leader reported.

A New Quarterback, a Career Night

The Bears changed quarterbacks this week, and the change changed everything. Skyler Locklear had started the first four games; on Wednesday the job went to Henry Belin IV, a fifth-year transfer from Duke who had waited his turn. Belin completed 28 of 39 passes for 300 yards — a career high — with two touchdown passes, both to Isaiah Myers, and one interception, the News-Leader reported. Head coach Casey Woods did not undersell the moment afterward, telling reporters that anyone who missed the game missed the start of something for this team.

Myers was the night's other constant. Beyond the two scores, he produced the play that saved the finish: on the final drive, with the game tied and the clock working against the Bears, Belin found Myers for 32 yards on third down — Myers adjusting back to the ball and securing it against his chest as he fell — to keep the possession alive and move Missouri State into winning range.

How the Fourth Quarter Unfolded

Kennesaw State refused to make it simple. The Owls, the defending conference champions, tied the game 21-21 on a 1-yard rushing touchdown with 6:06 remaining, capping a night in which quarterback Rickie Collins accounted for 285 yards of offence and two scores and wide receiver Dylan Gary caught passes for 135 yards and a touchdown, according to Kennesaw State's account of the game. Defensive lineman Tywon Christopher added 12 tackles with two tackles for loss for the Owls.

Missouri State's answer was patience weaponised. The Bears took the ball and simply kept it — marching the length of the field while the clock bled, converting the third down that mattered, and arriving inside the Kennesaw State 5-yard line with the game in hand. With the Owls out of timeouts, Belin knelt the ball three straight times to centre the kick and burn the clock to its final seconds, and Obeid's 20-yarder split the posts as time expired.

What the Win Means in the Table

The records tell the story of two programs passing each other. Missouri State improves to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA; Kennesaw State, which won this league a season ago, drops to 1-5 and 0-2 — its third straight heartbreaker, in the Owls' own description of the night. For a Bears program still new to the FBS level, a first conference win over the defending champions, sealed by a freshman-style clock clinic in the final six minutes, is the kind of result a season can pivot on.

In Wednesday's other Conference USA game, Western Kentucky held Sam Houston without a touchdown in a 16-3 road win in Huntsville, the Hilltoppers' first road victory of the season, lifting them to 2-1 in league play. The midweek CUSA slate continues to be the sport's best argument for football on every night of the week — a theme that runs straight into Thursday's professional offering, which we previewed in our Thursday Night Football preview.

How the Night Built to the Kick

The line score shows a game that refused to separate. The first quarter was scoreless. Kennesaw State edged the second quarter 7-6 to lead by a point at half-time. Missouri State answered 8-7 in the third to pull the game level at 14-14 heading into the fourth, and the teams traded 10-7 quarters from there — the Owls' tying touchdown first, the Bears' go-ahead points and then Obeid's winner last. Four quarters, and the largest margin anyone held all night was a single score.

That evenness is what makes the final six minutes the story. Plenty of teams, tied late against the defending champions with a first-time starter at quarterback, would have played for overtime or lost the plot entirely. Missouri State instead produced the most professional drive of its young FBS life: no panic after the tying score, a converted third-and-long when the drive was dying, and then the coldest piece of game management available — three kneel-downs inside the five, against a defence with no timeouts left, to make a 20-yard kick the final play of the game. First conference wins are supposed to be celebrated. This one was also, in its last two minutes, quietly clinical.

The Belin Question, Answered for Now

Quarterback changes in October usually signal desperation. This one now looks like discovery. Belin gave Missouri State its most efficient passing night of the season — 28 completions, 300 yards, poise on the one drive that decided the game — and did it against the conference's defending champion in his first start. Woods' postgame enthusiasm was not subtle, and on this evidence it does not need to be: the Bears have been searching for an offensive identity all season, and on Wednesday night, under the lights, a fifth-year transfer handed them one.

The tests get harder from here, and one career night is not a career. But programs remember firsts — first conference win, first walk-off, first night the new quarterback looked like the answer. Missouri State collected all three in the same evening. The full Wednesday night roundup, including the NBA preseason slate, is in our night wrap from October 14.

For Kennesaw State, the arithmetic is harsher: three straight heartbreakers, a 1-5 record, and a title defence that is effectively over before Halloween unless the Owls run the table from here. The defending champions were six minutes from escaping Springfield with a tie game and the ball in overtime; instead they watched a walk-off from the sideline. Conference USA's midweek window keeps producing these endings because the league's middle is this tightly packed — on Wednesday, it was Missouri State's turn to be the ones celebrating at the gun.
