TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2026 — The best-of-five Division Series moves fast, and this one is moving toward a pair of funerals. The Yankees and the Guardians — two teams that spent the summer being treated as October locks — both trail 2-0 and both play for their seasons on Wednesday. New York gets its last stand at Yankee Stadium. Cleveland has to survive in Chicago against a White Sox team that has not lost a playoff game yet. But before any of that, tonight belongs to the National League: two NLDS Game 3s, one tied series in Atlanta and one club a single win from the NLCS in San Diego.
NL Division Series · Game 3 · Series tied 1-1Dodgers at Braves, 6 PM ET, FS1 — Yamamoto vs. Sale in the duel of the postseason

The series shifts to Truist Park dead even, and tonight’s pitching matchup is the best of October so far: the Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto against the Braves’ Chris Sale. Sunday’s Game 2 in Los Angeles was a bullpen chess match — 13 pitchers, none of them lasting longer than 3.2 innings — and Atlanta finally broke through 3-2. Ronald Acuña Jr. singled, stole second and scored on Mauricio Dubón’s infield hit in the first; Michael Harris II went 3-for-5 with a triple and a double and scored on a Kris Bubic wild pitch; Freddie Freeman’s solo shot tied it for the Dodgers; and Los Angeles’ last gasp — a pinch-hit blast from Max Muncy in the ninth — died one batter later. Atlanta stole home field. Tonight’s winner takes the series lead, and neither club is built to lose a pitching duel.
One more storyline for Atlanta: 21-year-old Josue De Paula pinch-hit for the final out of Game 2, becoming the youngest Dodgers position player in a postseason game since Willie Crawford in the 1965 World Series. The kid will remember the at-bat longer than the result.
NL Division Series · Game 3 · Brewers lead 2-0Brewers at Padres, 9:30 PM ET, FS1 — Milwaukee is 27 outs from the NLCS

The Brewers are one win from the National League Championship Series, and they earned it the hard way. Jackson Chourio’s two-strike, two-run walk-off single off Mason Miller — a 101.3 mph fastball lined into center — won Game 2 4-3 and pushed San Diego to the brink. Tonight it’s Dustin May against Nick Pivetta at Petco Park, and the Padres have to win or the season is over. Miller had been untouchable before Chourio stayed alive on him; San Diego’s margin for error is now zero, and the Brewers can smell it.

AL Division Series · Game 3 · Rays lead 2-0Yankees at Rays, Wednesday 8 PM ET, TBS/truTV — the Bronx braces for a last stand

This is where the week gets heavy. The Yankees return home down 2-0, Aaron Judge still in street clothes with a right calf strain, and Max Fried taking the ball against the Rays’ Nick Martinez on Wednesday night. They were blanked 1-0 in Game 1, then committed four errors in Game 2 — three of them in the first inning, the first time in franchise history the Yankees have made three errors in a postseason inning. Ben Rice homered twice and has driven in both of New York’s runs in the series; the 3-through-7 hitters are a combined 0-for-33. Tampa Bay, the team that won the AL East in Judge’s absence, needs one more win to send the Yankees home. New York needs three straight — starting with its ace, and with a lineup that has managed five hits in two games.

AL Division Series · Game 3 · White Sox lead 2-0Guardians at White Sox, Wednesday 4 PM ET, TBS/truTV — Chicago comes home for the kill
Playoff baseball returns to Chicago for the first time since 2021, and the South Side is throwing a Blackout at Rate Field. The White Sox are 4-0 this October — all four wins on the road — and one win from their first ALCS since the 2005 championship season. Monday’s 4-3 comeback in Cleveland was the blueprint: Braden Montgomery’s go-ahead two-run double in the sixth, 5⅓ innings of one-hit relief from Sean Burke, and Grant Taylor slamming the door for the second straight game. The Guardians, who won the Central and got 11 strikeouts from Gavin Williams in Game 2, answered in the eighth on Jo Adell’s RBI triple but never found the equalizer. Cleveland managed only four hits in the game — Chase DeLauter had two of them — and the Guardians’ bats have been the quietest part of this series. They need three straight now. The first one has to come against a team that hadn’t trailed at any point this postseason until Monday’s first inning.
So that’s the board. Tonight: Atlanta and San Diego. Wednesday: Chicago and the Bronx. Three series could be over in the next 48 hours, and the Yankees and Guardians — the two clubs with the most to lose — are both one loss from answering for it. And if the favorites survive Wednesday, the calendar doesn’t soften: Game 4s would follow on Thursday (Guardians at White Sox at 5 PM ET, Yankees at Rays at 8 PM ET), with the NLDS Game 4s stacked behind them and a possible ALDS Game 5 on Saturday back in St. Petersburg. October doesn’t wait. Read the full NLDS Game 3 preview, the ALDS Game 3 outlook, and all of Previously’s MLB postseason coverage.
