WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2026 — October has a way of compressing a whole season into a single night, and Tuesday did it twice. In Atlanta, Yoshinobu Yamamoto turned in one of the great October starts you will ever see — seven innings, 10 strikeouts, one run — and walked off the mound owning a piece of baseball history no pitcher has ever held. Three time zones away, the Padres refused to die, with a starter working on two days’ rest closing out a 4-3 survival win in San Diego. The reward for both winners: about 18 hours of rest before the cruelest day of the Division Series. Here’s your daily roundup: Wednesday brings four games — a double sweep watch with the White Sox and Rays each one win from the ALCS, plus the Dodgers one win from the NLCS — and by midnight two teams could be booking ALCS travel, two more could be going home, and the two-time defending champions could be one step closer to chasing the first National League three-peat.
NL Division Series · Game 3 · Dodgers lead 2-1Dodgers 3, Braves 1 — the night Yamamoto went where no pitcher has gone

The box score says 3-1, but the story is the line next to Yamamoto’s name: seven innings, four hits, one run, one walk, 10 strikeouts on 98 pitches. Per OptaSTATS, he is now the first pitcher in MLB history to win five consecutive postseason appearances while allowing no more than one run and one walk in any of them — and all five have come on the road. The only real trouble arrived in the fifth, when the Braves loaded the bases with one out: Yamamoto walked pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez, then got Drake Baldwin on a groundout and froze Ronald Acuña Jr. on a splitter that nicked the bottom of the zone for a groundout to second. Inning over, lead intact.
The offense came in one devastating fourth-inning burst against Chris Sale, who had stranded six Dodgers through three. Andy Pages singled, Kiké Hernández launched a 406-foot two-run homer — his 17th career postseason home run, one behind Reggie Jackson’s 18 — and one out later Freddie Freeman, in his first postseason game back in the city where he played 12 seasons and won the 2021 title, tattooed his 18th career October homer to right-center. Sale ground through five on 95 pitches with seven strikeouts; Tanner Scott and Edwin Díaz closed it, Díaz surviving a leadoff double from Ozzie Albies in the ninth. The Dodgers can reach the NLCS with a win Wednesday night. Read the full story on Yamamoto’s historic streak.
NL Division Series · Game 3 · Brewers lead 2-1Padres 4, Brewers 3 — San Diego survives the night it couldn’t afford to lose

This one had everything October promises and almost nothing it guarantees. The Padres were down to their last 27 outs of the season, and they were down their closer: Mason Miller went on the paternity list about 45 minutes before first pitch. So they did the only thing they could — they asked Michael King, their Game 1 starter, to close. King, two days after throwing five innings, pitched the final two frames for his first save since 2023, and it ended the way only October can: with one-out walks to William Contreras and Brice Turang in the ninth, Christian Yelich lining one up the middle, and Xander Bogaerts going to his knees to snag it on a short hop, touching second and firing to first for a game-ending double play.
Jake Cronenworth’s 368-foot tiebreaking homer in the fifth was the difference, with Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado driving in early runs and Contreras answering with a solo shot and three hits for Milwaukee. The Brewers left 11 runners on base, lost their 12th consecutive postseason road game — a streak stretching to the 2018 NLCS — and still lead the series 2-1. Game 4 is Wednesday night at Petco Park, with a potential Game 5 back in Milwaukee on Friday. Full Game 3 story: Cronenworth’s homer, King’s six-out save.
AL Division Series · Game 3 · White Sox lead 2-0Guardians at White Sox, 4 PM ET, TBS/truTV — the South Side waits for its coronation
Playoff baseball returns to Chicago for the first time since 2021, and the White Sox need exactly one win to reach their first ALCS since the 2005 championship season. They are 4-0 this October, every win on the road, and they’ll go with the formula that got them here: opener chaos. Sean Newcomb (2-5, 3.09 ERA, 84 strikeouts) starts for Chicago. Cleveland answers with chaos of its own — Daniel Espino, he of just 15⅓ major-league innings, starting an elimination game after years of career-threatening shoulder and arm injuries. The Guardians have scored three runs in two games; the White Sox are rested, at home, and favored. If Chicago doesn’t finish it Wednesday, Game 4 is Thursday at 5 PM ET — and Cleveland would have Parker Messick and Gavin Williams lined up behind Espino, which is exactly why the White Sox need to end this today. Full ALDS Game 3 preview.
AL Division Series · Game 3 · Rays lead 2-0Rays at Yankees, 8 PM ET, Yankee Stadium, TBS/truTV — nine innings from a long winter

The Yankees’ season comes down to Max Fried, who gets the ball fully rested against the Rays’ Nick Martinez. The math is brutal and simple: Ben Rice’s two homers are New York’s only runs of the series; the rest of the lineup has three hits; four errors — three in the first inning of Game 2, a franchise postseason first — buried them in a 5-2 loss; and Aaron Judge, left off the roster with a calf strain, can’t return until the ALCS, if there is one. The Rays, who beat Fried on Sept. 22 in the game that clinched the AL East, need one win to sweep. The Yankees need three straight, starting with their ace, and Carlos Rodón waiting for a potential Game 4 on Thursday night. The Yankees’ last stand.
NL Division Series · Game 4 · Dodgers lead 2-1Dodgers at Braves, 6 PM ET, FS1 — the three-peat is suddenly very close
While the AL plays Game 3s in the afternoon, the National League plays a closeout game under the lights: Tyler Glasnow (5-2, 3.53 ERA) makes his first start of the postseason with a chance to send the Dodgers to the NLCS and keep the quest for the first NL three-peat alive. The Braves counter with deadline pickup Tyler Mahle, who has been everything they could have asked for — a 1.99 ERA over nine regular-season starts, one run over seven innings in his first career postseason start against Philadelphia. The problem for Atlanta isn’t the mound; it’s the bats. Drake Baldwin, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson — the aircraft carriers, as Walt Weiss calls them — are a combined 10-for-67 (.149) with 19 strikeouts this postseason, and Acuña, moved to DH in Game 3 with knee soreness from a Sunday slide, may not return to the field for Game 4. Atlanta has already survived one elimination game this October. It needs to survive another. A Game 5 would be Friday in Los Angeles.
So that’s Wednesday: a coronation attempt in Chicago at 4, a closeout bid in Atlanta at 6, an execution — or an escape — in the Bronx at 8, and a survival test in San Diego at 10. Four games, three time zones, and by midnight the Championship Series picture could be nearly set.
