NFL Injury Notebook: Thornton Out Months, Derwin James Week-to-Week, Jackson Doubtful

Kansas City’s breakout receiver goes down for months, the Chargers’ best defender is week-to-week, Baltimore’s MVP is doubtful, and a first-round rookie hits IR — plus one quiet goodbye after nine seasons.

The Short Version

The NFL’s attrition week started early. Kansas City’s breakout receiver left the field on a cart. Los Angeles’s best defensive back is week-to-week. Baltimore’s MVP is doubtful. A first-round rookie is on injured reserve. And a nine-year veteran quietly called it a career. Here is everything that mattered on the week’s injury wires — and what it means for the stretch run.

The hitChiefs lose Thornton for months

For a fraction of a second on Sunday, it looked like a celebration. Tyquan Thornton had just hauled in a 55-yard catch late in the fourth quarter of Kansas City’s 30-27 win over the Raiders, and he celebrated the grab — then crumbled. The Chiefs wide receiver dislocated his left ankle on the play, NFL Network reported, and the diagnosis that followed was brutal: he will undergo surgery this week and miss three to four months.

The timing could hardly be worse. Thornton finished that game with 5 catches for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns — the kind of performance that had him leading Kansas City’s receivers that afternoon. The ankle was put back in place after the injury, NFL Network added, and the Chiefs are optimistic he could return by the end of the season or in the playoffs. But for now, the team’s breakout downfield receiver is done until the coldest months of the year.

There was marginally better news elsewhere in that same receiver room. Rashee Rice’s hamstring injury is considered minor, NFL Network reported, and with the Chiefs’ bye landing in Week 5, Rice could be ready to go when Kansas City returns for Week 6. And the Chiefs may not be done adding: the team has interest in reuniting with free-agent wideout Tyreek Hill, whose agent Drew Rosenhaus said Hill could sign with a team in the coming days.

The defenderDerwin James is week-to-week — and the Chargers are 0-4

The Chargers are winless, battered, and now operating week to week with their best player. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that safety Derwin James is week-to-week with a hamstring injury — and, crucially, not an injured-reserve candidate, per Chargers Wire. That is the good version of this news: James was already playing through a fractured pinky finger, he was inactive for Sunday’s 30-23 loss to the Seahawks, and Los Angeles cannot afford to lose him for a month at minimum.

Elijah Molden is the primary player stepping up in James’s place, per the same reporting — a heavy assignment against a Denver team that comes to town on Sunday with the Chargers still searching for their first win. And the Chargers’ injury problems are not limited to the secondary: Harbaugh also said left tackle Rashawn Slater has a high ankle sprain and is an IR candidate, which would mean at least four more games without the lineman protecting Justin Herbert’s blind side. For a 0-4 team, this is about as bad a Monday as the calendar allows.

The quarterbackJackson doubtful against the Falcons

Baltimore’s situation is officially wait-and-see — and the waiting looks bleak. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Lamar Jackson has “just an outside chance” to play Sunday against the Falcons, is likely to miss this week and could miss next week too. It’s a sprained ankle, not a long-term issue, and no surgery is required; Tyler “Snoop” Huntley would start in his place. Ravens coach Jesse Minter characterized it as “dealing with a little bit of an ankle” that is not “crazy long term” — but a quarterback who wins with his legs and an ankle that won’t cooperate is a week-long question mark, not a day-to-day one. The rookieHarmon to IR in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh’s defensive line took a significant hit on Monday. The Steelers placed rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon on injured reserve with a foot injury, head coach Mike McCarthy announced — meaning a minimum of four games out. Harmon was hurt in Thursday’s 27-24 loss to the Browns, a rough follow-up to the moment that defined his young season: his Week 3 strip-sack sealed the win over the Bengals.

The numbers tell the story of a first-round pick who was already earning his keep: 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble this season. To fill the roster spot, the Steelers signed veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting off Tampa Bay’s practice squad to the active roster. For a team built on defensive line dominance, losing Harmon for a month-plus is the kind of quiet blow that shows up in January.

The farewellMarcus Davenport retires at 30

One day after his Bears debut, Marcus Davenport is walking away. The former first-round defensive lineman is retiring, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported — after asking for, and being granted, his release from Chicago’s practice squad. Sunday’s 23-12 win over the Jets was his only game in a Bears uniform: 1 tackle, 12 defensive snaps. And just like that, a nine-year career is over.

The trajectory tells the story of what might have been. The 14th-overall pick in the 2018 draft, Davenport spent five seasons in New Orleans, piling up 21.5 sacks — including a career-high 9 in 2021 — before stops in Minnesota (2023) and Detroit (2024-25). Injuries derailed him after 2022, and he never got his body all the way back. The final ledger: 166 tackles, 25 sacks and 7 forced fumbles in 78 games over parts of nine seasons. Not the career anyone drew up for the 14th pick. But nine NFL seasons is nine NFL seasons — and not many walk away on their own terms.

The theme of the week is depth — who has it, who doesn’t, and how fast a season turns on a single ankle. Kansas City will find out what its receiver room looks like without its newest weapon. Los Angeles will find out whether it can win at all. Baltimore will find out whether “not crazy long term” means Sunday or Thanksgiving. And Pittsburgh will find out whether a first-round rookie was the glue in the middle of the line. For where all of this leaves the hierarchy, our Week 5 power rankings have the 49ers sitting on top — but October has a way of rearranging the furniture. Check back with the notebook all week.
