NFL Week 5 Power Rankings: The 49ers Finally Take the Crown

For the third straight week, the top spot changed hands — and this time there's no argument. San Francisco is 4-0 with the league's stingiest defense and an offensive line that hasn't allowed a sack. Behind them: the unbeaten Chiefs, the weirdest 4-0 team in modern history, and a Bengals team that might be starting backup wide receivers on Sunday.

The Short Version

The crown keeps moving, and this week it landed in Santa Clara. For the third consecutive week, the No. 1 spot in USA Today's NFL power rankings changed hands — and this time there is barely a debate. The San Francisco 49ers are 4-0, they've allowed a league-low 64 points, and Sunday's 24-14 suffocation of the Denver Broncos completed a first month that has just about every major outlet saying the same thing: this is the best team in football.

The consensus is unusually broad. USA Today's Nate Davis has the 49ers first (up from fourth), CBS Sports has them first, NBC Sports Bay Area’s rankings declared “ladies and gentlemen, your new No. 1,” and the Arizona Republic kept them on top for a second straight week. Even the oddsmakers agree: SI's odds-based rankings have San Francisco at +850 to win the Super Bowl.

The case for San Francisco

Start with the offensive line. The 49ers haven't allowed a sack through four games — the first team to open a season that way since Peyton Manning's 2005 Colts, per Davis. Brock Purdy has turned that clean pocket into 11 touchdowns against one interception, and the defense just held Denver to 14 points. The Niners have scored 122 points and allowed 64, per the Republic.

The history is on their side, too. This is the third 4-0 start under Kyle Shanahan — now the longest-tenured coach in franchise history — and the Niners turned the first two into Super Bowl berths. The latest injury worry is fullback Kyle Juszczyk, but with George Kittle “all the way back,” per NBC Sports Bay Area, the machine keeps humming. Next: at Seattle on Sunday, a FOX late-window doubleheader with early control of the NFC West at stake.

The Chiefs are right behind — and running out of receivers

If there's a challenger, it's the AFC's last undefeated team. Kansas City sits No. 2 at USA Today, CBS, NBC and the Republic (the Palm Beach Post actually has the Chiefs first), and Sunday's 30-27 survival in Las Vegas showed why: Kenneth Walker III carried 22 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns, and Patrick Mahomes keeps finding answers.

But the win was expensive. Wideouts Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton both went down Sunday in Vegas, gutting a receiver room that was already thin. The Chiefs get a Week 5 bye to triage — and USA Today’s Nate Davis is already asking the question hanging over Kansas City: “Will the AFC's final undefeated team have anyone left to play wide receiver on the other side of their Week 5 bye? … Maybe an old friend?” We've got the latest on the Tyreek Hill situation here.

The strangest 4-0 team you'll ever see

Then there's Minnesota. The Vikings are No. 3 at CBS, the Republic and the Palm Beach Post, and nobody ranking them seems happy about it. They're the second team in the last 90 years to win three straight games while scoring one or fewer scrimmage touchdowns across those three games, per the Republic. Sunday's 15-10 win over Miami was the latest escape — and afterward, starting quarterback Kyler Murray didn’t pretend it was fine. “Today wasn’t, by any means, up to our standard,” Murray told reporters afterward, via Vikings Wire. “Too many penalties, shooting ourselves in the foot. We gotta be better.”

The Murray story is one of the year's strangest. Released by Arizona on March 11, signed by Minnesota the next day for the veteran's minimum, knocked out of the opener with a concussion — then back to steer the league's weirdest winning streak while former first-rounder J.J. McCarthy was traded away and Carson Wentz (2-0 in relief) went back to the bench. Getting Justin Jefferson back from injury, hopefully next week, would help, Vikings Wire reports. Sunday: at New Orleans.

The muddled middle

Seattle holds at No. 3 or 4 nearly everywhere after bouncing back with a 30-23 win over the Chargers — and they're doing it with a patchwork backfield, with Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price both sidelined and return man Rashid Shaheed moonlighting at running back. Davis notes veteran Joe Mixon could eventually join the mix. The defending champs remain one of the league's best defenses.

Buffalo tumbled after the 29-26 home loss to New England — NBC dropped the Bills from first to fourth, CBS has them sixth. Josh Allen is mortal and the defense has surrendered 31, 31 and 29 points in three of four games. Monday night brings a trip to SoFi Stadium to face the Rams.

Baltimore (3-1) sits seventh at CBS with Lamar Jackson’s ankle “a cloud over this team,” in CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco’s framing — Tyler Huntley's experience is the insurance policy. Jacksonville (3-1) is fifth at CBS with the league's second-ranked scoring defense and a London date with the Eagles on Sunday morning. Chicago (3-1) keeps winning with backup quarterbacks behind a punishing run game. Las Vegas (3-1) lost for the first time but pushed the Chiefs to the wire and looks like one of the season's surprise teams.

Denver is the rankings' Rorschach test: fourth at USA Today, 11th at CBS, 15th in Palm Beach. The defense is legit — both losses came to the unbeaten Chiefs and Niners — but CBS Sports asked the uncomfortable question after Sunday: “Where is the offense? They looked lifeless.” All-Pro corner Patrick Surtain II (ankle) isn't expected to miss much time, per Davis, which is the one piece of good news. The Rams (2-2) rallied past Philadelphia and get the Bills on Monday night; Matthew Stafford has thrown a league-high 162 passes for an offense running the ball just 38 percent of the time. Dallas (2-2) got right with a 34-30 road win at Houston and opens Week 5 on Thursday night.

The fallers

Nobody's sliding faster than Cincinnati. The Bengals are 20th at USA Today (down three spots), 14th at CBS and 15th at The Athletic after the 22-17 home loss to Jacksonville — and the real problem is who's catching passes. Per the Cincinnati Enquirer, Joe Burrow could be throwing to backups Dohnte Meyers and Mitch Tinsley in Miami on Sunday if Ja'Marr Chase (concussion) and Tee Higgins (groin) can't clear in time. The 0-4 Dolphins, dead last at No. 32, are waiting.

CBS's biggest movers tell the other side of the story: Cleveland climbed nine spots, Detroit eight. And the network's headline didn't mince words about the bottom of the West: the Chargers and Texans are, in the verdict of CBS Sports’ rankings, “a disaster.”

What to watch in Week 5

It starts Thursday in Arlington: the winless Buccaneers visit the Cowboys at 8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video. Tampa is down to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels after Baker Mayfield's right thumb injury — Adam Schefter reported he's expected to miss three to six weeks — and the Bucs managed 14 points against Green Bay with one of the league's three worst offenses by EPA per play, per SI. Dallas, coming off that statement win in Houston, is laying 9.5 (10 at some books) with a 47.5 total. Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung have the call, per USA Today's announcer listings.

Sunday opens in London (Eagles-Jaguars, 9:30 a.m. ET, NFL Network), runs through a 1 p.m. slate headlined by the Bengals in Miami, the Raiders in New England and a fascinating Giants-Commanders game — first place on the line, both teams potentially down to backup quarterbacks (our Commanders report) — and closes the afternoon with the 49ers in Seattle on FOX. Sunday night: Lamar Jackson's Ravens in Atlanta. Monday night: the Bills at the Rams at SoFi. The Chiefs and Panthers get the week off. Our full Week 5 preview has the rest, and the NFL hub stays current all week.
