The Friday Injury Report Just Rewrote Week 9

No NFL game kicked off on Friday. Sunday changed anyway — San Francisco ruled out three receivers and cleared Nick Bosa, Philadelphia ruled out six players, Detroit ruled out five, and the questionable list runs from Amon-Ra St. Brown to George Pickens.

Friday is the NFL's paperwork day, when the week's final injury reports turn three days of practice tea leaves into official designations. Most Fridays, the paperwork just confirms what everybody already suspected. This Friday it moved games. With Week 9's opener already in the books — Jacksonville's 33-10 rout at Baltimore on Thursday night — the Friday reports rewrote the math on Sunday's slate from Santa Clara to Madrid, and no team felt it from both directions at once quite like the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco gets Bosa back and loses its receivers

The 49ers wrapped up their final practice of the week at 6-1, fresh off their Week 8 bye, and head coach Kyle Shanahan's final injury report left the team without three wide receivers for Sunday's home game against the Las Vegas Raiders: Mike Evans (ribs and Achilles), Deebo Samuel Sr. (hamstring) and Christian Kirk (knee), according to the team's official site. Evans and Samuel missed all three practices this week. Evans last played in the Week 6 win over Washington, when he caught three passes for 94 yards before leaving before halftime. Kirk's is the cruelest of the three — the 49ers said he suffered a meniscus injury on Thursday after practicing Wednesday, and when Shanahan was asked whether it would need surgery, he said, "We're not sure yet. Still trying to decide."

Demarcus Robinson (ankle) is questionable, and he is close to the whole depth chart now. Robinson has been out since his Week 2 ankle injury against Miami, and Shanahan sounded ready to activate him from injured reserve, saying, "Most likely D-Rob. Not sure on Nate," about Robinson and cornerback Nate Hobbs, who is also questionable along with Upton Stout and Siran Neal.

Then came the other half of San Francisco's Friday. Nick Bosa practiced in full and carries no game designation — he is cleared to return against Las Vegas after being sidelined since Week 2, having been limited Wednesday and Thursday with knee and calf injuries. "Cleared to go. Had a real good week. I'm excited to have him back," Shanahan said. Christian McCaffrey is also back without a designation after a hamstring strain suffered in the Week 7 game at Atlanta cost him Wednesday's practice and limited him Thursday, and defensive lineman DeForest Buckner rejoined the team this week. So yes: the 49ers might open Sunday (4:25 p.m. ET, FOX, at Levi's Stadium) with their fourth receiver and their best pass rusher on the field at the same time. Both halves of that sentence are true, and both matter.

Six out in Philadelphia, five out in Detroit

Philadelphia's Friday report was the league's longest. The Eagles ruled out six players for Sunday's game against the New York Giants, according to Eagles Wire: receivers DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle), linebacker Jihaad Campbell (hamstring and quad), cornerback Jonathan Jones (hamstring), returner Britain Covey (knee) and cornerback Michael Carter II (abdomen). Backup quarterback Tanner McKee is questionable with a rib injury after a limited Friday practice, while Saquon Barkley was limited by hamstring and back injuries but carries no game designation. The Eagles come in at 2-6, on a six-game losing streak, averaging 17.1 points per game, and they host the Giants at 1 p.m. ET Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field before their Week 10 bye.

Detroit's list ran five deep ahead of its trip to Miami. Lions Wire reported the Lions ruled out edge rusher DJ Wonnum (concussion), cornerback D.J. Reed (hip), center Cade Mays (ankle) and safety Kerby Joseph (knee), plus linebacker Jack Campbell, who suffered a neck injury against the Vikings and has been hospitalized but is improving. Star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is questionable, as are running backs Sione Vaki (ankle) and Jacob Saylors (neck). Safety Brian Branch, cornerback Rock Ya-Sin and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga were all full participants and are off the report. Miami listed running backs Jaylen Wright and Kaytron Allen and edge rusher Malik Herring as questionable. Kickoff at Hard Rock Stadium is 1 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX.

Madrid starts short-handed, and the rest of Friday's list

Sunday opens at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, where the Cincinnati Bengals meet the Atlanta Falcons at 9:30 a.m. ET on NFL Network — and Atlanta arrives without its usual two-man backfield. Falcons Wire reported running back Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) was ruled out for a third straight game after practicing limited all week; he had initially been listed as questionable before the team ruled him out. Receiver Zachariah Branch (hamstring) is also out. Edge rusher James Pearce Jr. added a back injury in Friday's practice and is now questionable after being expected to make his 2026 debut, and linebacker Divine Deablo (forearm) is questionable despite practicing in full. Cincinnati ruled out safety Kyle Dugger (quad). The Bengals are 5-2 and have won three straight, with Joe Burrow coming off a six-touchdown performance in Week 8; the Falcons are 3-5 behind Michael Penix Jr. The quarterback picture for the whole weekend is its own story, and the Bernabéu itself has been preparing for this one.

The rest of Friday's designations, game by game: the Jets ruled out receiver Garrett Wilson (concussion) for their trip to Kansas City, according to FantasyPros, which noted Adonai Mitchell and Omari Cooper stand to gain targets for New York. Cowboys receiver George Pickens (hamstring) is questionable for Dallas's trip to Indianapolis, FantasyPros reported. The Rams will be without tight end Terrance Ferguson at Washington after he hurt his hamstring in Friday's practice, according to Rams Wire. Los Angeles is already missing Davante Adams, and fellow tight end Colby Parkinson is questionable. And the Chargers got four defenders back at once: Athlon Sports reported cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Rodney Shelley, out since Week 4 with hamstring injuries, were full participants Friday and are off the injury report, as are linebacker Daiyan Henley (shoulder) and linebacker Bud Dupree (illness), ahead of Houston's visit at 4:05 p.m. ET Sunday.

Sunday night has its own short list. Tampa Bay's only absence for the trip to Chicago is outside linebacker YaYa Diaby, sidelined by a knee injury, according to Bucs Wire. Receiver Emeka Egbuka (foot) remains questionable even after practicing in full on Thursday and Friday. Chicago listed running back Kyle Monangai, defensive back Malik Muhammad II and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson Sr. as questionable. Tampa Bay is 3-5 after consecutive wins over Carolina and Atlanta; the Bears are 6-2 with three straight wins, and Sunday Night Football from Soldier Field (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC) will be Chicago's third straight primetime game, with Caleb Williams hosting a Buccaneers team that has steadied since Baker Mayfield's return, according to NBC Sports.

What Thursday left behind, and what is still coming

The one final already on the Week 9 board set the tone for all this roster churn. Jacksonville's 33-10 win at Baltimore was over by halftime: Trevor Lawrence threw for 242 yards and a touchdown in the rain, and the Jaguars' defense intercepted Baltimore's Joe Fagnano twice, according to Athlon Sports. Baltimore was down to its third quarterback after losing Lamar Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley to injuries in Week 8, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia. Jacksonville is 6-2 with a three-and-a-half-game lead in the AFC South and 10 days to enjoy it; Baltimore's slide has reached four straight losses.

Fourteen games remain: seven at 1 p.m. ET Sunday (Broncos at Panthers, Cowboys at Colts, Jets at Chiefs, Lions at Dolphins, Browns at Saints, Giants at Eagles and Rams at Commanders), four in the late window (Texans at Chargers, Raiders at 49ers, Packers at Patriots and Cardinals at Seahawks), Sunday night in Chicago, and a Monday night closer (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN and ABC) that needs no injury drama to sell itself — Josh Allen and the 6-1 Buffalo Bills at the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium. Pittsburgh and Tennessee are on their bye. The full numbers behind every one of these matchups live in the Stats Hub. Friday decided who is actually available for them. Sunday decides what it meant.
