COLUMBUS
Tuesday was one of those full-league nights the NHL schedule throws up in late October: an 11-game slate, two overtime finishes, a hat trick, a homecoming goal in Columbus, a milestone game for a goaltender in Newark, and the league's last winless team finally breaking through in Washington. The late game in Las Vegas — Tampa Bay's 6-2 win over the Golden Knights — is covered in full in Previously's report from Las Vegas. Here is everything else that mattered from the rest of Tuesday's finals.
Marchenko scores in his Columbus return as the Maple Leafs roll
The loudest boos of the night were reserved for a player wearing the other team's jersey. Kirill Marchenko, acquired by Toronto on Sept. 28 as the centerpiece of a six-player trade that sent Matthew Knies to Columbus, scored a power-play goal in his first game back in Columbus, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-2, according to NHL.com. Marchenko's goal tied the game 1-1 in the first period after Jake Christiansen had given Columbus an early lead, and Toronto then blew the game open with four goals in the second period.
Easton Cowan and Jack Roslovic — himself a former Blue Jacket — each had a goal and two assists, Morgan Rielly had three assists, and Auston Matthews and William Nylander each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs (5-4-2), who won their second straight, per NHL.com. Anthony Stolarz made 35 saves for Toronto, per NHL.com, while Jet Greaves was pulled after allowing five goals on 19 shots for Columbus (3-5-0), which has lost four of five. Marshall Rifai scored his first NHL goal for the Maple Leafs, according to Reuters, and Charlie Coyle added a late goal for the Blue Jackets.

Allen's 500th game ends with the Devils holding off Colorado
In Newark, the New Jersey Devils beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 behind a milestone performance from their goaltender. Jake Allen, honored in a pregame ceremony for playing his 500th career game, made 31 saves — 18 of them in the third period — as the Devils held off a late Colorado surge, according to Reuters. Arseny Gritsyuk scored for the third straight game, finishing a play that began when Dougie Hamilton pressured Nathan MacKinnon into a turnover, per Reuters.
Luke Evangelista had a goal and an assist in his return after missing three games with an illness, Declan Chisholm scored his first goal for the Devils, and Jesper Boqvist's empty-net goal with 3:55 left stood up as the winner, according to Reuters. Gabriel Landeskog scored in the first period and Artturi Lehkonen scored twice in the final 3:13 for Colorado, which got 37 saves from Scott Wedgewood in the loss, per Reuters.
Celebrini caps a Sharks comeback in Montreal
The San Jose Sharks rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit to beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in Montreal, with Macklin Celebrini scoring his second goal of the game on a power play at 2:13 of overtime, according to NHL.com. Celebrini one-timed a pass from Ivar Stenberg past Jakub Dobes for the winner, after Dobes had been penalized for interfering with Collin Graf at 1:53 of overtime, per NHL.com.
Montreal led 3-1 after two periods on goals from Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovsky and Cole Caufield — each of whom finished with a goal and an assist, according to Reuters. Michael Misa cut the deficit early in the third, Tyler Toffoli tied it with a power-play goal at 11:09, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 31 saves for San Jose, per Reuters. Dobes made 26 saves for the Canadiens, who had won three of their previous four.

The Kings are winless no more
The Los Angeles Kings arrived in Washington as the NHL's only winless team, having scored a league-worst 12 goals through six games, according to the Associated Press. They left with their first win of the season, rallying from a 2-0 first-period deficit to beat the Washington Capitals 5-2. Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson staked Washington to its early lead, but Adrian Kempe and Artemi Panarin scored 31 seconds apart in the final minute of the first period to tie the game, per the AP.
Erik Gustafsson's power-play goal at 7:28 of the third period put Los Angeles ahead for good, Kempe scored his second of the game, and Scott Laughton added an empty-netter, according to the AP. Kempe finished with two goals, Panarin with a goal and two assists, and former Capitals goaltender Darcy Kuemper made 30 saves against his old team. The win came at a cost: Los Angeles lost center Quinton Byfield to an upper-body injury in the first period, and coach Peter Laviolette said he would be evaluated Wednesday, per the AP. Logan Thompson stopped 21 shots for Washington.
Rantanen does it all for Dallas in overtime
Mikko Rantanen scored all three Dallas goals, completing his 11th career regular-season hat trick with a power-play goal at 3:52 of overtime, as the Dallas Stars beat the Boston Bruins 3-2, according to Reuters. Rantanen lifted a close-range backhand over Jeremy Swayman's shoulder for the winner, after Pavel Zacha was penalized for slashing Thomas Harley in the extra period, per Reuters.
Dallas never led in regulation. Matt Poitras scored 2:09 into the game and James Hagens restored Boston's lead in the second period, but Rantanen tied the game at 2:50 of the second and again with 6:22 remaining in the third, per Reuters. Jason Robertson had two assists and Jake Oettinger made 18 saves for the Stars, who won their third straight. Swayman made 22 saves for Boston, which remains unbeaten in regulation over its last six games (5-0-1) despite seeing its five-game winning streak end, per Reuters.
One-goal finishes: Islanders hang on, Blues edge the Jets
The New York Islanders scored all three of their goals in the first period and held on to beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 at home, according to Reuters. Ondrej Palat, Victor Eklund and Simon Holmstrom scored 5:05 apart late in the first period, Matthew Schaefer recorded his eighth assist in nine games, and Ilya Sorokin made 15 saves. Frank Vatrano and Alex Killorn scored for Anaheim, which has lost four straight after a 4-1-0 start, per Reuters; Lukas Dostal made 22 saves.
In St. Louis, defenseman Philip Broberg broke a tie with a power-play goal at 8:47 of the third period and added an assist as the Blues beat the Winnipeg Jets 2-1, according to Reuters. Jimmy Snuggerud opened the scoring in the first period, Cole Perfetti tied it 32 seconds into the third, and Joel Hofer made 32 saves for St. Louis. Stuart Skinner stopped 25 shots for Winnipeg, which has lost three straight, per Reuters. The Blues' next assignment is a visit from the Golden Knights on Thursday — the game Vegas heads to after the loss covered in the Las Vegas report.
