Review: Olivia Rodrigo's 'Unraveled' Tour Is an Early Claim for 2026's Best Live Show

Two sold-out nights at Washington's Capital One Arena closed the opening stretch of her third major tour. USA Today's verdict: an early career zenith — and maybe the best live show of the year.

Olivia Rodrigo brought herself some flowers this weekend, and the flowers are literal. Two sold-out nights at Capital One Arena — Oct. 3 and Oct. 4 — closed the opening stretch of her “Unraveled” Tour, her third major tour, and USA Today’s review of Sunday’s show landed Monday with a verdict that will hang over the rest of the 2026 concert calendar: the tour, barely in its second week, is an early career zenith for Rodrigo and “just might be the best live show of the year.”

The review, published Oct. 5, describes an inverted-horseshoe-shaped stage styled like a pastel garden — “the setting of a Laura Ashley ad campaign inspired by a Martha Stewart garden,” in the reviewer’s telling — and a two-hour show that never lets up. Rodrigo opened with “Drop Dead,” batted through the giddy “U + Me = <3,” and, in the night’s biggest gear shift, strapped on a pink electric guitar for the tour debut of “Love Is Embarrassing” — playing it herself, the review notes, unlike many of her pop-star peers.

“Good 4 U” got its sugar coating injected with, as the review puts it, “a spurt of bile” — the old venom intact, the new staging bloomy. And through it all, per the review, Rodrigo’s exuberance from the moment she emerged from “this pastel-colored field of dreams” defined infectious and didn’t subside for two hours.

A garden, not a gimmick

The production concept is the show’s thesis: songs from her third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, framed within seasonal chapters tracing the emotional arc of a relationship, according to tour reports — including a striking moment in which artificial rain transforms Rodrigo’s white dress into a red outfit during “The Cure.” This is a tour about a breakup album rendered as a living garden: pastel where the GUTS era was purple-black, bloomy where the SOUR era was stark.

That ambition is what the review is really praising. A pastel garden could have been a cute backdrop; instead it’s the whole dramaturgy — a relationship’s seasons playing out in flowers, rain and costume changes while Rodrigo, in a girly white frock, works an inverted horseshoe that puts her inside the crowd rather than above it.

Third tour, third album, new era

Context matters here: “Unraveled” is Rodrigo’s third major tour, following the SOUR tour and the GUTS world tour — the latter one of the defining arena runs of 2024. The new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, is her third full-length. The tour opened Sept. 25–26 at Hartford’s PeoplesBank Arena, played two nights in Pittsburgh (Sept. 29–30), then the D.C. double that prompted this review.

The itinerary from here: Charlotte’s Spectrum Center Oct. 7–8, Chicago’s United Center Oct. 11–12, three nights in Boston (Oct. 15, 17 and 18), Montreal, Toronto, Columbus, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, Sunrise and Nashville, then Vancouver, Seattle, Oakland and Sacramento — and two nights at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena Dec. 19–20, before four January shows at Los Angeles’ Intuit Dome and a European leg next spring. Vegas gets the garden in December; the city’s other big 2026 music story was Metallica’s Sphere stand.

The support acts are a statement too: Wolf Alice on the early dates, with Devon Again and The Last Dinner Party also on the North American itinerary — guitar bands and indie voices, not DJ filler — and Die Spitz and Grace Ives joining for the 2027 European run. It’s the kind of undercard you book when you’re confident the headliner needs no help.

Why the verdict lands

Early-tour reviews are usually hedged — the show is still finding its shape, the critic writes “room to grow.” This one isn’t hedged. Calling a show “an early career zenith” two weeks in, and floating “best live show of the year” in October, is the kind of claim that invites the rest of the year to argue. It also sets the bar for everyone else with arena dates left on the 2026 calendar — a bar that now includes tours like Doja Cat and Latto’s 31-city run, which opened its North American leg in Detroit this fall.

For Rodrigo, 23, the framing matters. The GUTS tour made her a generational live act; the Unraveled review argues she’s already leveled up — not louder, but more authored. A pastel garden instead of a purple scream. A pink guitar she actually plays. Two hours that, per the review, never subside.

If the D.C. double was the thesis statement, the next two months are the proof. Charlotte and Chicago get the garden this week. Whether the “best live show of the year” claim survives the year’s remaining heavyweight tours — and the year’s remaining new-album cycles — is now the argument the review started. Check the weekend in music for where the rest of the industry stands.
