Philip Anthony Mitchell's 'Contend' Hits No. 1 on Amazon's Christian Chart — and No. 2 Among All Books

Two days after release, the 2819 Church pastor's debut is the best-selling Christian book on Amazon and the No. 2 book of any kind in the store — with the New York Times and Publishers Weekly lists still to come.

Two days into its life, Contend is the best-selling Christian book in America — at least on the chart that tracks where America buys most of its books. On Wednesday, Philip Anthony Mitchell's debut reached No. 1 on Amazon's Best Sellers list for Christian Books & Bibles, and the Best Sellers Rank Amazon publishes on the book's own product page stood at No. 2 in Books overall: every book, in every category, in the largest bookstore in the country.

The sweep underneath the headline number runs three categories deep. The same product page showed Contend at No. 1 in Christian Faith, No. 1 in Christian Bible Criticism & Interpretation and No. 1 in New Testament Bible Study. Amazon's rankings are the retailer's own — computed from Amazon sales and refreshed constantly — which makes them a live wire rather than a final score. But a first-time author who pastors a church in Atlanta does not drift to No. 2 among all books by accident, and a book does not sit there on its second day without an audience that arrived ready.

The book itself is a 224-page walk through the letter of Jude — a one-chapter warning to a church its author saw drifting — pressed in two directions at once: outward, against a culture Mitchell argues is negotiating the faith away, and inward, at the private compromises believers tolerate in themselves. The subtitle carries both fights: Standing Boldly for Biblical Truth While Winning the War Within. Matt Chandler wrote the foreword, and each chapter closes with study furniture — a “Takeaway Truth” and a “Contender's Charge” — as the publisher's description presents them. We profiled Mitchell, 2819 Church and the book's long road to the shelf on release day: read the profile here.

The audience was warmed up at stadium scale. On Saturday, October 10, an estimated 80,000 people filled AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, for ACCESS — Mitchell's “That Powerful Hour of Prayer” — according to The Christian Post. Admission was free, and every ticket was claimed within eight hours. The church Mitchell relaunched in January 2023 — 2819, for Matthew 28:19, the Great Commission — has grown from fewer than 200 people to around 6,000 weekly worshippers, according to Associated Press reporting, and its YouTube channel counts nearly two million subscribers. Mitchell's sermon clips travel by the millions. A book launched into that funnel does not start from a cold open; it starts from a congregation.

Release week kept supplying receipts. By Wednesday, Barnes & Noble's online listing showed the $29.99 hardcover out of stock. The audiobook — seven hours and 48 minutes, narrated by Mitchell himself, with Chandler reading his foreword — was already drawing listener ratings on Audible within its first day. Mitchell marked release day with an exclusive interview on The Big Tigger Morning Show on Atlanta's V-103. And the book arrived exactly one year after HarperCollins Christian Publishing announced that W Publishing Group, an imprint of Thomas Nelson, had signed him — a deal placed by Embolden Media Group's Jevon Bolden with senior acquisitions editor Kyle Olund.

The honest fine print, because it matters: these are Amazon's charts, and this story names them as exactly that. The lists the publishing industry treats as its official scoreboard — the New York Times Best Sellers lists and the Publishers Weekly charts — run on a delay, and neither had published a list covering Contend's release week as of Wednesday. The Times list for the release week is expected around October 21–22, with Publishers Weekly's weekly list after that. We will update this story when they land, whatever they say.

What Amazon's day-two snapshot settles is narrower, and still remarkable: the stadium translated. A pastor most of the country met in 60-second clips filled a football stadium on Saturday, put a book on the shelf on Tuesday, and by Wednesday it was outselling every other Christian title on Amazon — and all but one book, period. Whether the official lists ratify it is next week's question.
