Nintendo did not announce a Direct this weekend. It just dropped one.
The surprise presentation was entirely about Pikmin — and as of this year, Nintendo is officially calling November 1 “Pikmin Day.” Three ones, three Pikmin. Nobody sensible is going to argue with the math, because the day came with presents — and, as Kotaku reported, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced the day himself at the top of the presentation.
The headline gift is Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy. The new edition of 2023's Pikmin 4 launches November 12 on Nintendo Switch 2, and it arrives bundled with Dandori Academy, a new mode built around the series' Dandori battles — the timed, split-your-workforce contests that quietly became the best part of Pikmin 4. Nintendo is showing the edition off in a dedicated Treehouse broadcast airing later today on YouTube, Nintendo Life reported, so the curious can watch the new mode being played before they commit to anything.
Better: nobody has to wait until November 12 to touch it. A free demo of the Switch 2 Edition is out tomorrow, Monday, November 2. That is the whole pitch, and it is a good one — Pikmin has always been a series people admire from a distance and fall for the moment they actually play it. A free demo, eleven days before launch, is Nintendo betting the game sells itself. Recent history says that bet is safe: Pikmin 4 is the best-selling entry the franchise has ever had, and its cast — the plant-like Pikmin and Oatchi, the very good rescue dog who carries the whole operation — has only gotten more famous since.
The Direct did not stop at the game. Nintendo also announced new animated Pikmin shorts and further updates for Pikmin Day, extending a celebration that now covers the main series and the Pikmin Bloom mobile game. It is a remarkable amount of love for a franchise that spent years as Nintendo's cult favorite — the one Shigeru Miyamoto kept making because he believed in it, long before it was a reliable seller.
There is something genuinely sweet about the arc here. Pikmin began in 2001 as a strange little strategy game about a shipwrecked captain ordering sprouts around a garden. Twenty-five years later it has its own day on the calendar, a Switch 2 edition with a new mode, a free demo timed to convert the curious, and a Treehouse stage. Small heroes. Long game.
The practical part, one more time: the demo lands tomorrow, the Treehouse airs today, and the full Switch 2 Edition follows on November 12. Set the reminder for the demo. The Pikmin will handle the rest.
