Jalen Duren Puts Up 24 in 15 Minutes as Pistons Rout Timberwolves 128-106

Duren went 8-of-9 from the field in his preseason debut after signing long-term, Cade Cunningham ran the show, and Detroit turned a nine-point deficit into a 22-point win at Target Center.

Jalen Duren needed fifteen minutes to make his case. In his preseason debut, and fresh off signing a long-term deal with the Detroit Pistons, Duren scored 24 points on 8-of-9 shooting and the Pistons rolled past the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-106 on Wednesday night at Target Center, according to Detroit Bad Boys' recap of the game. What began as a showcase for the home team ended as a statement by the visitors: Detroit owned the paint, the tempo and, from the second quarter on, the scoreboard.

The opening quarter belonged to Minnesota. The Timberwolves led 38-29 after one, per the Minnesota News Network, and the home crowd had every reason to expect a comfortable night. Then the game inverted. Detroit flipped the scoreboard by halftime, taking a 65-58 lead into the break, and the second half only widened the gap, as Minnesota's offense stalled and its mistakes piled up in bunches.

Duren, in Fifteen Minutes

Start with the efficiency. Duren's 24 points came in just 15 minutes of playing time, on 8-of-9 shooting from the field, and he added two steals and a block, according to Detroit Bad Boys. Preseason minutes are managed carefully, especially for a player making his debut in the exhibition schedule, which makes the production more remarkable, not less: Duren did not need a full night's workload to bend the game. Every touch around the rim seemed to end in points, and Minnesota never found an answer for his combination of size, touch and timing.

The timing of the performance matters, too. Duren's debut came after he signed a long-term deal to stay in Detroit, the kind of commitment a franchise makes to a cornerstone, and cornerstone money brings cornerstone scrutiny. One preseason game proves nothing, but it is exactly the first impression a front office wants to see: the player it just invested in, dominating the minutes he is given, on the road, in the building of one of the West's established contenders.

Detroit Won the Paint, Then Everything Else

The team numbers explain the margin. Detroit outscored Minnesota 64-30 in the paint, shot 57 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range, and recorded 32 assists, per Sportsnet's summary of the game. That is not a hot-shooting fluke; that is a team generating its best looks all night, at the rim first, and from the arc when the defense collapsed to stop the rim. Thirty-two assists alongside that efficiency tells you the ball moved, the reads were right, and Minnesota's defense was a step behind for three quarters.

Cade Cunningham orchestrated much of it, finishing with 14 points and nine assists, according to Detroit Bad Boys. Cunningham did not need to chase his own scoring with Duren finishing everything inside; he ran the offense, kept the tempo up after Minnesota's turnovers, and let the game come to him. For a Pistons team building its identity around that Cunningham-Duren axis, Wednesday was a preseason glimpse of the finished product: a lead guard who bends defenses, and a finisher who punishes them for bending.

Minnesota's Night Went Sideways

For the Timberwolves, the film session will be less pleasant. Minnesota committed 20 turnovers and shot just 38.2 percent from the field, per the Minnesota News Network, numbers that turned a nine-point first-quarter lead into a 22-point loss. Anthony Edwards scored 20 points to lead the Timberwolves, but support was scarce: LaMelo Ball managed just three points on 1-of-5 shooting, according to Sportsnet. When a team builds an early lead behind its starters and then gives all of it back and more, the preseason lesson writes itself.

Context still applies. It is October, rotations are experimental, and Minnesota drops to 3-2 in the preseason with the finale coming Friday at Chicago, per the Minnesota News Network. Nobody in the Timberwolves' locker room will weigh Wednesday heavily a month from now. But the pattern is worth noting even in an exhibition: turnovers and paint defense are effort-and-focus areas, and both failed Minnesota at home. Detroit, meanwhile, leaves with the opposite kind of preseason takeaway. Its stars looked like stars, its offense hummed, and its newly committed centerpiece looked worth every dollar of the deal.

There was a shape to Detroit's night that goes beyond one hot quarter. The Pistons kept attacking the same places, the rim first and the corners when help came, and the assist total climbed because the reads stayed simple. Rotations came and went without the offense losing its rhythm, which is the real preseason test for a young team: not whether the starters can build a lead, but whether the structure survives the substitutions. On Wednesday, it did more than survive. It stretched a game Minnesota once led by nine into a twenty-two-point margin that never felt like a fluke.

Minnesota closes its preseason Friday in Chicago, and Detroit heads toward the regular season with its core looking ready ahead of schedule.
