Prabhas' Spirit Moves to Diwali 2027 — and Sets Up a Box-Office Clash With Ramayana Part 2

Sandeep Reddy Vanga used a new poster to move his Prabhas cop drama out of March 2027 and into the biggest window on the Indian calendar — where Nitesh Tiwari's epic is already waiting.

The Diwali 2027 box-office calendar acquired its main event on Sunday. Spirit, the action drama that pairs Prabhas with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga for the first time, has moved its worldwide theatrical release from March 5, 2027 to October 29, 2027, landing squarely in the Diwali festive window, Bollywood Hungama reported. Vanga announced the shift himself on social media with a fresh poster, writing, as Filmfare quoted his post: "29TH OCTOBER DIWALI 2027 — Worldwide RELEASE DATE." Filmfare added that the poster campaign was captioned "Prabhas Anna's new poster. Shades on. Spirit always."

What Spirit is

The film is a cop action drama in which Prabhas plays an intense, hot-headed IPS officer — a role his fan base has wanted from him for years, as Pinkvilla noted in its report of the announcement. Triptii Dimri plays the female lead, her first film opposite Prabhas, and the cast includes Vivek Oberoi, Kanchana, Aishwarya Desai and, per Sacnilk's report, Prakash Raj. Vanga — whose Kabir Singh and Animal were both enormous commercial successes wrapped in fierce debate — has written and directed the film, which is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Pranay Reddy Vanga, Krishan Kumar and Prabhakar Reddy Vanga, per Bollywood Hungama, under the T-Series and Vanga Pictures banners. Pinkvilla reported the film is planned for release in multiple languages, including Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Japanese, Chinese and Korean — a rollout that underlines how the production is being positioned: not as a regional film with dubbing, but as a global event title from the outset.

Why the date moved

The mechanics of the shift are unusually legible. Filmfare reported that the March slot opened up as a problem when Fauzi, another major production, moved from December 2026 to March 2027, crowding the window; Pinkvilla added that the March date would have set Spirit against Salman Khan's Monster in an Eid-period clash, which the makers have now averted. Herzindagi's account of the announcement offered the production-side explanation: the move accommodates the scale of the shoot and the extensive post-production the film requires, with production expected to complete by mid-2027. Sacnilk noted a detail that raises the stakes for Prabhas specifically: most of his big pan-India releases — the Baahubali films, Saaho, Radhe Shyam, Adipurush, Salaar and Kalki 2898 AD — arrived in summer, monsoon or Christmas windows rather than Diwali, so the festive slot is new territory for the star, and his fans, per Filmfare, are treating the choice of the festival as an event in itself.

The clash it creates

The trade for avoiding one clash is walking into a bigger one. Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana Part 2 — the second half of the mythological epic starring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita, whose first part is slated for November 5, 2026 — is scheduled for the same Diwali 2027 window, Bollywood Hungama, Zoom TV and Sacnilk all noted. Sacnilk was careful to frame the confrontation as potential rather than finalized: an identical release date for Ramayana Part 2 has not been confirmed, so the industry is looking at two tentpoles circling the same holiday rather than a locked head-to-head opening. Zoom TV pointed out an extra wrinkle — Vivek Oberoi appears in both films — and Pinkvilla raised the possibility that the clash may yet dissolve, noting Vanga and Ranbir Kapoor's off-screen camaraderie from Animal and their planned reunion on Animal Park, and judging it reasonably likely that one production eventually shifts to avoid the other.

For now, both films are holding October 2027, and the early positioning is itself a story about the direction of Indian event cinema: two of the industry's most anticipated productions, built on opposite appeals — a star-driven contemporary cop drama and a mythological epic — competing for the same festive screens, in the same week, in a market where Diwali has historically been wide enough for exactly one giant. Something will move, or the window will be tested like it rarely has been. Either outcome starts from this weekend's poster.

The scale of what Spirit would be clashing with is visible this month. Ramayana Part 1 opens on November 5, 2026, and its launch has already drawn the industry's senior figures into public support: Bollywood Hungama reported on October 18 that S.S. Rajamouli — the director of Baahubali and RRR — cheered the film publicly, praising director Nitesh Tiwari and producer Namit Malhotra ahead of the release. A two-part epic arriving with that level of establishment backing, and a full year of audience goodwill to compound before its second part, is not a soft target for a Diwali weekend. If Part 1 performs as its makers expect, Part 2 will enter October 2027 as the incumbent — the film the holiday audience has already committed to — which is a materially harder position to challenge than a cold open against an unknown quantity.

Spirit's own anticipation economy is already running at the level where scheduling news becomes news. Filmfare's report of Sunday's announcement described a production whose every poster and glimpse has set social media buzzing, with fans studying frames for clues about Prabhas' look — the full-grown beard and cap of the new poster were themselves a story within the story. That is the asset Vanga is protecting with the longer runway: a first collaboration between a star of Prabhas' scale and the director of Animal does not need a crowded March to prove itself, and the makers have plainly decided it is worth more as a Diwali event, even at the price of sharing the season's oxygen with an epic.
