Marco Reus Can End Salt Lake's Season Tonight — and Put the Galaxy In

Seventh meets 11th in Sandy with three Western Conference playoff spots left for six teams. Of all six, only these two play each other — and the math is cruel both ways: a Galaxy win puts LA in and knocks Salt Lake out in the same ninety minutes, while Salt Lake's rookie, Sergi Solans, chases a piece of MLS history either way.

Six teams are fighting for three playoff spots in the West tonight, and five of them get to play somebody else's season. Portland go to Austin, who are already done. Colorado go to Dallas, who are already safe. Seattle host an LAFC side locked into sixth. Minnesota host a San Jose team playing for seeding. Only two of the six have to look across the pitch at each other — and they are the two with the least room to breathe.

Real Salt Lake against the LA Galaxy, at America First Field in Sandy, 7 p.m. Eastern on Apple TV, with every Western Conference match kicking off at once. Seventh against 11th. Two points between them. And a set of consequences so clean you can say them in one breath: if the Galaxy win, the Galaxy are in the playoffs and Salt Lake's season is over. Tonight. In Salt Lake's own building.

Start with the visitors, because their side of the bargain is the simple one. LA sit seventh on 44 points, and they control their own fate completely. Win, and they take the West's last direct Round One place — no Wild Card detour, a Best-of-3 series against the conference's second-place finisher, currently FC Dallas. Draw, and they need at least one of Portland, Colorado or Seattle to drop points. Lose, and they are watching five other stadiums like everybody else. A month ago this team was 10th and drifting. They arrive in Utah unbeaten in four, with 18 points from their last 10 matches — tied with Dallas for the best return in the West over that stretch — and fresh off the loudest result of their season.

That was Halloween in Carson: Galaxy 4, Austin 1, and Marco Reus conducting all of it. João Klauss opened it with his 10th goal of the season. Hirving Lozano, back from injury, headed in the second from a Reus cross. After the break Reus set up Robert Taylor, then set up Sergi Roberto for the Spaniard's first Galaxy goal — three assists in one afternoon, a club season high, and 12 goal contributions in his last nine appearances. On the season Reus has eight goals and 12 assists, twenty goal contributions from a 37-year-old who was supposed to be the garnish on this team. Instead he is the reason they are here — and Salt Lake have seen this film. When these clubs met in April, Reus scored both Galaxy goals in a 2-1 win, the winner an 85th-minute penalty. He has already ended one Salt Lake night this year.

Now the hosts, whose side of the bargain is anything but simple. Salt Lake sit 11th on 42 points, outside the line, and the honest version of their position is this: win, and then they still need one favour — a single dropped point from Portland at Austin, Colorado at Dallas or Seattle against LAFC — to reach the playoffs for a sixth straight year, a West best, potentially finishing as high as seventh. Draw, and the thread gets very thin. Lose, and it is done: the first missed postseason of the Pablo Mastroeni era, after qualifying every year since 2021.

What Salt Lake have going for them is the building and the boy. The building: RSL are 12-4-4 at America First Field this season, unbeaten in their last three at home, and they have scored in seven straight matches. The boy: Sergi Solans, a 23-year-old Spanish rookie who has scored 14 goals in his first MLS season — RSL's Golden Boot leader by a distance — including his third brace of the year in the 3-0 home win over St. Louis two weeks ago, and five goals with an assist across his last six appearances. Fourteen also puts him three goals short of two records at once: Cyle Larin's MLS rookie mark of 17, set with Orlando in 2015, and Salt Lake's own single-season club record of 17. A hat trick tonight ties both. Salt Lake do not need a hat trick. They need a win. But the season has a sense of humour, because of where Solans came from: he was taken 30th overall in the 2025 SuperDraft by Salt Lake — with a pick Salt Lake acquired from the LA Galaxy, for $50,000 in allocation money. The rookie trying to end the Galaxy's season tonight is a player the Galaxy's pick produced.

And if that is not enough history for one midfield, Pablo Ruiz is walking back through the door. Ruiz played nine seasons for Salt Lake — 136 MLS appearances, 105 starts — before a trade in the summer window took him to the Galaxy. He has started eight matches for LA since, appeared in all ten, and tonight he lines up in the visitors' midfield in the stadium that was his home for the better part of a decade, trying to finish his old club's season. His Galaxy teammate Lucas Sanabria has family on the other side of the ball, too — his brother Juan Manuel plays for Salt Lake. Fifty-four times these clubs have met in MLS play; Los Angeles hold the wins edge, Salt Lake have actually outscored them across the series, and on Utah soil it is RSL who lead. None of that travels either. Tonight is its own thing.

Here is the duel the league itself circled — MLS's Decision Day watch guide billed this match as Reus against Solans, and the numbers explain why. It is the creator against the finisher. Reus's 20 goal contributions are built to set a table: 12 assists against eight goals, a player whose best work ends with somebody else celebrating. Solans's 18 are built to finish one: 14 goals against four assists, a rookie whose movement in the box is the whole point of him. Behind them sit the reinforcements — Klauss, on 10 goals and five in his last seven outings, and Lozano, fit again and scoring, for LA; Morgan Guilavogui, with ten assists of his own this season, feeding Solans for Salt Lake. Whichever star's shape wins the night probably decides both seasons. The pair's season lines sit side by side in our Stats Hub comparison.

So watch it for the cleanest stakes Decision Day offers. No tiebreakers required to understand it, no calculator needed at kickoff. The Galaxy win and they are in, and Salt Lake are out, and Reus will have done it to them twice in one season. Salt Lake win and the longest playoff streak in the West survives another year — with a little help from Texas or Seattle — and the rookie the Galaxy's own draft pick delivered gets at least one more night to chase Larin. One of those endings is ninety minutes away. The other one is too.
