Clear the schedule. Fifty-four college football games are on today's ESPN slate, sixteen of them involving ranked teams, and Major League Baseball answers with four best-of-five Division Series openers. Three games own the day: No. 7 Alabama at No. 16 Mississippi State to open the morning, No. 5 Ohio State at No. 14 Iowa in the afternoon, and No. 4 Miami walking into Death Valley under the lights. Here's the full Saturday, start to finish.

The morning: Alabama–Mississippi State is a top-16 SEC fight at 9 a.m.

First kickoff worth your coffee is No. 7 Alabama at No. 16 Mississippi State, 9:00 a.m. PT on ABC. Ranked SEC matchups don't grow on trees in October — two top-16 programs, a road test for the Crimson Tide, and the kind of game that rearranges the conference pecking order by noon. On the other channel at the same hour, No. 3 Notre Dame visits North Carolina (ESPN and Disney+), a noon-Eastern kick the Irish can't afford to sleepwalk through. Then at 9:45, No. 2 Georgia hosts Vanderbilt on SEC Network — the Bulldogs' weekly appointment with inevitability, and the Commodores' weekly chance to be the story of the weekend. The college hub is tracking every ranked kickoff as they land.

The afternoon: Ohio State walks into Kinnick

At 12:30 p.m. PT, the day's heaviest top-15 matchup kicks off on CBS: No. 5 Ohio State at No. 14 Iowa. Kinnick Stadium is one of the loudest, meanest road environments in the Big Ten, and a top-five team walking into it is appointment television — the Buckeyes' playoff résumé gets its loudest test of the young season. Opposite it on ABC, No. 8 Florida visits No. 25 Missouri in another ranked-SEC-vs-ranked-SEC collision. And don't sleep on the undercard: No. 17 Tennessee hosting Auburn is old-school SEC theater, while UCF at No. 20 Houston and Boston College at No. 21 SMU fill out the ranked ledger. If you've got opinions on how any of this plays out, our sportsbook has the lines.

The night: No. 4 Miami gets Death Valley

The primetime window belongs to the ACC. No. 4 Miami travels to Clemson for a 4:30 p.m. PT kickoff on ABC, and Death Valley at night is the single loudest setting college football has to offer. A top-five road game in one of the sport's true cauldrons — this is the kind of Saturday night that either launches a season or ruins one. It's stacked competition for your second screen: at the same 4:30 hour, No. 12 Texas Tech visits Colorado on FOX and Washington visits No. 18 USC on NBC. The late shift brings No. 10 BYU at TCU (4:00 p.m., ESPN and Disney+), No. 6 Indiana at Rutgers (5:00 p.m.), No. 11 LSU hosting McNeese (4:45 p.m.), and No. 24 Kentucky at South Carolina (1:15 p.m.). Round out the ranked slate with Utah State at No. 22 Boise State and Michigan visiting Minnesota for the Big Ten's most underrated trophy-adjacent afternoon.

October baseball: four Division Series openers

College football doesn't get the day to itself. All four MLB Division Series open their best-of-five sets today, Game 1s across both leagues. The White Sox visit the Guardians at 10:00 a.m. PT to crack the seal, the Braves walk into Dodger Stadium against the Dodgers at 1:00 p.m., the Yankees visit the Rays at 3:30 p.m., and the Padres close the night at the Brewers at 5:30 p.m. Four Game 1s, four aces presumably, zero margin for a slow start — in a five-game series, the opener is the whole season compressed into nine innings. The MLB hub has the series pages and every first pitch.
