Tank's 'Yes' Makes History: A Record 12th No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay

Nineteen years after his first chart-topper, Tank passes Charlie Wilson for the most No. 1s by a man in the chart's history — and does it with a song built on a Floetry classic.

Tank owns a piece of radio history outright now. His single "Yes" climbed from No. 2 to No. 1 on Billboard's Adult R&B Airplay chart dated October 17, becoming his 12th leader on the chart and breaking his tie with Charlie Wilson for the most No. 1s by a male artist in the chart's history, according to Billboard's chart rundown as reported by AllHipHop and Rated R&B. Sound RNB's week-in-review put the milestone in its full frame: the most No. 1s by any man in the chart's 33 years. The only artist ahead of Tank on the all-time list, at any position, is Alicia Keys, with 14.

How the record was built

The tie it broke was recent and hard-earned on both sides. Wilson reached 11 leaders with "Keep Me In Love" in October 2025, AllHipHop reported. Tank drew level earlier this year when "Control" topped the chart — it held the spot for two weeks in March, per Rated R&B's account — and "Yes" now moves him one clear. Behind the front two, the all-time standings underline the scale of the achievement: Usher sits at 10 leaders, while Bruno Mars, Maxwell and Kem each have nine, according to Rated R&B's tally.

The run is also a study in longevity. Tank's first Adult R&B Airplay No. 1 was "Please Don't Go" in 2007. The list since includes "Next Breath," "I Deserve" and "When We" — which finished as Billboard's No. 1 adult R&B song of 2018, a detail the Associated Press noted in a 2023 interview in which Tank called it his biggest record — along with "Dirty," "Slow" with J. Valentine and last year's "Gone" with Aaliyah, per Rated R&B and Red Cup RNB's histories of the run. Twelve No. 1s across nineteen years, through the format's transition from terrestrial dominance to a streaming-era niche, is a different kind of statistic from a hot streak: it describes an artist the format's programmers and audience never rotated out.

The song, and the double

"Yes" is built on a foundation its audience already loves. The single interpolates Floetry's "Say Yes," the early-2000s neo-soul standard, folding a piece of the genre's canon into a new performance — a maneuver that works at adult R&B radio precisely because the format's listeners carry the reference with them. The song is the second chart-topper from EXPERIENCE, Tank's eleventh album, released September 25 through R&B Money and BMG, with guests including Charlie Wilson — the man whose record he just took — Kirk Franklin and Remy Ma, according to Red Cup RNB.

The milestone is a double. BMG, Tank's label partner, confirmed that "Yes" reached No. 1 on both Billboard's Adult R&B Airplay chart and Mediabase's equivalent chart in the same week — command of the two competing measurements of adult R&B radio at once. AllHipHop framed the achievement against its personal backdrop: the record arrives after a career chapter shaped by hearing loss, which makes a chart built entirely on how records sound to programmers and listeners a pointed place to set it.

A landmark year, still running

The chart record caps a year that has kept expanding Tank's footprint beyond radio. BMG's rundown of his 2026 notes a viral Verzuz appearance and his Broadway debut in Alicia Keys' musical Hell's Kitchen — a neat symmetry, given that Keys is the one artist still ahead of him on the chart he now leads among men. He is also a series regular in the fourth season of Hulu's Reasonable Doubt, which premiered October 6, playing music mogul Eric Cropper at the center of the season's central case, according to YouKnowIGotSoul's report. Thirty years into a recording career, the week's news is not that Tank is still working. It is that, by the format's own arithmetic, no man has ever worked his corner of radio better.

The album behind the single helps explain the moment. EXPERIENCE is Tank's eleventh studio album, and Red Cup RNB's account of its release noted that he used it to try sounds listeners might not expect from him — dance, gospel and even a little country — with Charlie Wilson, Kirk Franklin and Remy Ma among the guests. Wilson's presence on the tracklist gives the week's chart news a certain symmetry: the singer Tank just passed for the male record appears on the very album that produced the record-breaking single, as a collaborator rather than a rival. And “Yes” is the album's second Adult R&B Airplay leader, following “Control” earlier this year, which means the record was not set by a catalog resurgence or a one-off — it was set by a current album, in its release window, at a format where Tank has now been a fixture for three different decades of R&B.

There is a format story underneath the artist story. Adult R&B Airplay is one of the few remaining radio charts where an artist's audience ages alongside the artist, and where a catalog built since 2007 compounds rather than expires. Programmers at the format are not chasing a teenage discovery cycle; they are serving listeners for whom “When We” was a wedding song and “Please Don't Go” is a memory with a date on it. A twelfth No. 1 in that environment is closer to a lifetime-achievement measurement that happens to be taken weekly. Tank's year continues on those terms: Red Cup RNB noted he has been on the road supporting Usher and Chris Brown, appears on Hulu's Reasonable Doubt, and is set to headline a new R&B cruise next fall — the live circuit where this audience actually lives. The chart record and the itinerary describe the same career, measured two ways.
