Taylor Swift's 'Patient Zero' Holds No. 1 for a Second Week as Drake and ADÉLA Shake Up the Top 10

The Hot 100 dated October 17, 2026 has a familiar name on top, a record-extending debut at No. 5, and a first-ever top 10 for Slovak singer-songwriter ADÉLA.

A debut at No. 1 is a headline. A second week at No. 1 is a statement. According to Billboard, Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" tops the Hot 100 for a second consecutive week on the chart dated October 17, 2026, holding off one of the longest-running No. 1 songs in chart history and fending off a top-five debut from her most persistent chart rival. The song arrived at the summit last week, becoming Swift's 16th career leader; this week it proved the debut was no one-week surge of curiosity streams.

"Patient Zero" is the flagship of The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the deluxe edition of Swift's 2025 album released September 25 with four new songs. Its sister tracks — "Cleveland!," "Babylon" and "Pink Clouding" — flooded the upper reaches of the chart alongside it in the deluxe's first week, and the parent album is simultaneously enjoying a 14th week atop the Billboard 200, a twin grip on both flagship charts that we unpack in our story on the historic Billboard 200 top five. The Music desk has rarely seen a deluxe edition behave this much like a brand-new album cycle.

The Song It Replaced Is Still Standing at No. 2

Holding at No. 2 is Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas," and context matters here: Langley is not some fading incumbent. Her single spent a record 24 weeks at No. 1 before "Patient Zero" finally displaced it, one of the most durable runs the Hot 100 has ever recorded. That it remains parked at No. 2 — close enough to reclaim the top spot in a soft week — says as much about Langley's year as Swift's hold says about hers. The Hot 100 blends streaming, radio airplay and sales, as Billboard's chart methodology lays out, and "Choosin' Texas" has the radio footprint of a song that has been unavoidable for half a year. This is less a changing of the guard than two eras of dominance overlapping at the top of the chart.

Drake's 91st Top 10 Arrives by Way of an Interpolation

The week's biggest new entry belongs to Drake and Don Toliver. "Solar Eclipse," one of the four tracks added to the October 2 reissue of Drake's HABIBTI, debuts at No. 5. Per Billboard, it is Drake's record-extending 91st Hot 100 top 10 — a number that long ago left the rest of the field, Swift included, in the distance — and just the second top 10 of Toliver's career, his first in a lead role. In a neat chart-room twist, Billboard notes that "Solar Eclipse" interpolates "Choosin' Texas" itself: the No. 2 song is quite literally inside the No. 5 song. We covered the four-track HABIBTI expansion, and the debate it set off among Drake's fans, in our earlier report on the reissue.

The debut also underlines how thoroughly the deluxe-and-reissue playbook now runs the Hot 100. Both of this week's defining top-five stories — Swift's hold at No. 1 and Drake's arrival at No. 5 — were powered not by new albums but by new songs bolted onto existing ones, released weeks apart in a deliberate autumn arms race between the two biggest chart acts alive.

ADÉLA Breaks Through

The top 10's freshest face is at No. 9. Slovak singer-songwriter ADÉLA climbs three spots with "Nicole Kidman," earning the first Hot 100 top 10 of her career, according to Billboard. Breakthroughs like this are easy to skim past in a week dominated by Swift-and-Drake arithmetic, but a first top 10 — arrived at by climbing rather than debuting, which usually signals genuine audience growth rather than a fanbase mobilization — is the kind of milestone that reroutes a career. InMusic's chart coverage likewise flagged ADÉLA's arrival as one of the week's headline developments, alongside the Swift hold and the Drake debut.

The Arithmetic Underneath the Hold

Second weeks are where deluxe-edition spikes go to be audited, and "Patient Zero" passed. InMusic's breakdown of the chart notes that Swift now owns 74 career Hot 100 top 10s — the most of any female artist and second only to Drake's 91 among all acts — a reminder that the Swift-versus-Drake statistical duel now runs through virtually every Billboard record category at once: most No. 1 albums (tied at 15), most Hot 100 top 10s (Drake ahead), most Hot 100 leaders (Swift at 16 and climbing). This week's chart managed to advance all three storylines simultaneously, which is precisely why a seemingly routine hold at No. 1 drew this much attention. The song also had to survive the natural second-week decay that hits streaming-heavy debuts once playlist novelty fades and the opening-weekend surge from core fans washes out of the tracking period. It did — comfortably enough that the question for next week is not whether "Patient Zero" can be caught, but whether anything currently on the chart has the radio growth to catch it.

Step back and the October 17 Hot 100 tells a tidy story about pop in 2026: a 16-time chart-topper defending her crown, a record 24-week champion refusing to leave, the all-time top-10 king adding a 91st entry, and a newcomer from Slovakia squeezing into the frame. The top of the chart has rarely been this crowded with history at once — and with the Showgirl and HABIBTI machines still spinning, next week's chart is unlikely to be any quieter.
