CLEVELAND — The afternoon belonged to October baseball. A game moved up for weather in Cleveland finished before the West Coast lunch rush ended, Wall Street closed with a sharp split between blue chips and chips, and a federal mail investigation widened three weeks before the midterms. Here is what moved since this morning.
1. Guardians edge Rays 3-2, take 2-1 ALCS lead
Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 3-2 in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series at Progressive Field, taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Petey Halpin hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth, Gavin Williams struck out nine over five innings, and Cade Smith recorded the final four outs for the save.
The game was moved up to a 1 p.m. ET start because of expected rain. Game 4 is Friday at 6 p.m. ET in Cleveland, with Game 5 Saturday if the series continues on schedule.
2. Dow jumps about 550 at the close as investors rotate out of chips
Major indexes closed higher Thursday, led by the Dow, which rose about 1.1 percent — roughly 550 points — while the S&P 500 added about 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq finished up about 0.1 percent after erasing an early drop. A closely watched chip index fell for a seventh straight session as investors moved into health care, consumer and other defensive names.
The move followed September wholesale prices rising 1.3 percent month over month, above expectations, while retail sales rose 0.8 percent. Traders are now weighing another possible Federal Reserve rate increase at its meetings in the coming weeks.
3. FBI and Postal Service investigate powder letters to election and congressional offices
The FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service said Thursday they are investigating suspicious mailings, some containing an unknown powdery substance, sent to state election officials and congressional offices ahead of the November 3 midterms. Wisconsin's elections commission confirmed Thursday it received a similar piece on October 14; staff did not open it, no one was injured, and field testing found no hazardous material.
Officials in Louisiana, Ohio and Oklahoma were among those affected, and at least one letter to a California senator's office was intercepted. Investigators are working to intercept additional letters and have told offices to treat suspicious mail as potentially hazardous.
4. Six Flags scrutiny widens after fatal Goliath fall
A CNN analysis of government records and court filings published Thursday described years of reported maintenance issues and guest injuries at Six Flags parks before Monday's fatal fall from the Goliath coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia. The victim was identified as 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem.
At least nine similar coasters across six parks remain temporarily closed, and SeaWorld Orlando also paused its Mako coaster out of caution. Six Flags Over Georgia is set to reopen Friday, but Goliath will stay closed while Cobb County police and state safety officials investigate; no cause has been established.
5. Anthropic opens its doors to outside testers as New York urges an IPO pause
Anthropic said October 15 it has given researchers from METR, a nonprofit that tests frontier AI models, access to company hardware, office space and internal tools, with the ability to publish findings without an Anthropic veto outside narrow redactions. The move lands as the company prepares for a planned public offering.
Separately, New York City Comptroller Mark Levine urged Anthropic in an October 14 letter to pause that IPO until safety and governance concerns are fully addressed. Anthropic has not publicly replied in the reporting so far, and the two developments set up the safety debate that will follow the company to market.
6. Céline Dion gets a Barbie Signature doll for her 1998 Oscars look
Mattel unveiled a Barbie Signature doll honoring Céline Dion, recreating the navy gown she wore for her 1998 Academy Awards performance of the Titanic theme, with a necklace inspired by the film's Heart of the Ocean. The collector doll is listed at $60 through Mattel Creations, with shipping on or before December 31 in U.S. listings.
The release arrives during Dion's Paris residency return after her 2022 stiff-person syndrome diagnosis forced a long break from regular performing. It joins Mattel's Signature line honoring other major music figures.
7. Tesla's long-delayed Roadster demo is tonight in Texas
Tesla is set to demonstrate its next-generation Roadster tonight at 7:55 p.m. CT from the SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas, streamed live on X. The event comes nearly nine years after the car was first shown as a concept in 2017 alongside the Semi, and after an October 1 date was postponed for weather.
Production is now targeted for 2027 or 2028 in current reporting, and Tesla has not confirmed final pricing or specifications ahead of the demo. What is shown tonight — and whether it is a production-ready car — is the open question going in.
8. Castlevania: Belmont's Curse launches today to strong reviews
Konami released Castlevania: Belmont's Curse on October 15 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after Castlevania III, it stars Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont, and was developed with Evil Empire and Motion Twin.
Early review roundups are strong, with several perfect and near-perfect scores alongside more mixed takes, putting it among the week's biggest game launches. It also headlines a busy Xbox release day that includes two new Game Pass day-one titles.
Still developing this afternoon
Still developing: Brewers can finish the Dodgers tonight
Milwaukee leads Los Angeles 3-0 in the NLCS and Game 4 is tonight at Dodger Stadium at 9 p.m. ET on FS1. A Brewers win sends them to the World Series; a Dodgers win keeps the series alive for Game 5.
Still developing: Seahawks at Broncos on Thursday Night Football
Seattle visits Denver tonight with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET, streaming on Prime Video. It is the headline game on a packed Thursday that also includes 11 NHL games.
Still developing: Golden Knights close the night, Roadster demo streams live
The Vegas Golden Knights host the Calgary Flames at 10 p.m. ET to close the NHL slate. Earlier in the evening, Tesla's Roadster demonstration streams at 7:55 p.m. CT — expect first reactions and any pricing or production details to land tonight.
