Ant's Record Night Ruined Giannis's Miami Debut

Anthony Edwards opened the season with 45 points, 10 rebounds and nine threes — a Timberwolves franchise record for an opener — and Minnesota won all four quarters in a 131–106 rout of the Heat. The Night Shift: the Receipt, the Argument, all 11 finals, and tonight's watchlist.

A · The Night's Big Story

Anthony Edwards opened the season with 45 points, 10 rebounds and nine threes — a Timberwolves franchise record for an opener — and Minnesota won all four quarters in a 131–106 rout of the Heat. The two most anticipated debuts of the night happened in the same game, and neither was his.

Giannis Antetokounmpo's first game in a Heat uniform was everything Miami asked for: 35 points on 13-for-19 shooting. LaMelo Ball's first game in a Timberwolves uniform was just as clean: 21 points and 6 assists on debut. On almost any other night, either one is the headline. Edwards took it from both of them by halftime.

The game itself turned on geometry, not star power. Minnesota made 21 threes to Miami's 8 — a 39-point edge from the arc in a game decided by 25 — and outrebounded the Heat 52–34, with 17 offensive boards. The Wolves led for good from the 4:46 mark of the second quarter and by as many as 30.

Why it matters on night one: this is the version of Minnesota that travels. The shooting came from everywhere (five Timberwolves in double figures), the glass work was collective, and Edwards bent Miami's defense until it broke. One game is one game — but openers don't usually come with this much evidence.

The question: was this a duel that got away from Miami, or a rout hiding inside one? The stars were nearly even — Edwards shot an effective 70.7% from the floor, Giannis 68.4%. As a duel, it was a draw.

What decided it: everything around them. Minnesota's 21-for-50 from three against Miami's 8-for-33 is +39 points from one line on the floor. Add a 52–34 rebounding edge and 17 offensive rebounds, and the Heat needed their two best players to be perfect just to stay close. Giannis nearly was. It wasn't enough.

The turning point: the middle quarters. Minnesota won the second and third 65–49, with Edwards scoring 15 of his 45 in the third — four of his nine threes landed there.

The full comparison — tonight's duel against last season's baseline — is The Argument, and it stays open in the Stats Hub below.

The third quarter is the game in miniature: Minnesota won it 30–22, Edwards outscored his own first half's pace, and the lead he built there never came back under twenty for long. Play by play, in the Gamecast.

E · The Argument — Edwards vs Giannis

Two superstars, one opener, nearly identical efficiency. So who actually won the duel?

Read the efficiency line first: 70.7% against 68.4% is a coin flip. The duel was decided by where the points came from. Edwards scored 27 of his 45 from behind the arc, which is also why his teammates kept finding space — Miami had to guard him at 28 feet. Giannis scored everything inside, efficiently, and still finished −11 because the floor around him never opened up.

THE VERDICT — FOR TONIGHT

Nearly a dead heat on efficiency. Edwards won it from deep. Range, not power, decided the duel — and one game starts this argument rather than settling it.

F · By the Numbers — Three Numbers

45
Anthony Edwards's points in Miami — a Timberwolves franchise record for a season opener, with 9 threes and 10 rebounds. Ty Jerome matched the 45 in Memphis.
+39
Minnesota's scoring edge from three-point range alone (63 points to 24) — larger than the 25-point final margin.
+29
Rudy Gobert's plus-minus — the best mark in the game — on a 5-point night with 15 rebounds and 5 offensive boards.

G · The Verdict — Night One, Judged Carefully

Observed: Minnesota won all four quarters in Miami, shot 21-for-50 from three, and outrebounded the Heat 52–34. Edwards set a franchise record for an opener. Giannis was excellent in defeat.

Interpreted: This is what the Wolves look like when the arc and the glass show up together — and it is a hard team to guard, because Edwards's range is the thing that makes the rest of it possible.

Too early to say: Whether Miami's new pairing works, or whether Minnesota shoots like this in February. One night is evidence, not a conclusion — and tonight, the evidence belonged to the Wolves.
