THURSDAY PREVIEW — If you only watch one night of sports this week, make it this one. Thursday, October 8 is the rare evening when every major league has something on the table: Thursday Night Football in Dallas, an elimination game in Chicago, a brand-new NLCS matchup, a national-TV Lakers showcase, an early-season NHL measuring stick — and, because this is Las Vegas's week too, Metallica back at Sphere. Here is your complete guide, in order of first pitch, kickoff and curtain.
Thursday Night Football: Buccaneers (0-4) at Cowboys (2-2) — 8:15 p.m. ET, Prime Video
The headline matchup of the night, and maybe the season's cruelest. The 0-4 Tampa Bay Buccaneers fly into Arlington to face the NFL's second-highest-scoring offense: Dallas is averaging 30.5 points a game, Dak Prescott has thrown for 1,065 yards with eight touchdowns against one interception while completing 70% of his throws, and CeeDee Lamb is on an absolute heater after torching Houston for 17 catches in Week 4. The Cowboys are 3-1 against the spread, installed as 9.5-to-10-point favorites with a 47.5 total, per Sports Illustrated.
Tampa Bay, meanwhile, is managing just 19 points a game — 23rd in the league — with a minus-5 turnover differential tied for one of the worst marks in football, and Baker Mayfield's thumb injury has the quarterback situation in flux. The recent history is more competitive than the spread suggests: these teams have met four times in five seasons, and three of the four were decided by one score. But 0-4 teams on a short week, in front of a national audience, against the league's hottest offense? Our full preview digs into the matchups — read the Thursday Night Football preview here.
ALDS Game 4: Guardians at White Sox — 8 p.m. ET, Rate Field
Baseball's game of the night is in Chicago, where the White Sox lead the ALDS 2-1 and can punch their first ticket to the ALCS — with a chance to clinch a postseason series at home for the first time since the 1906 World Series. Cleveland, fresh off Wednesday's 9-3 Game 3 rout, sends 25-year-old lefty Parker Messick to the mound with the season on the line. Messick allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings in Game 1; NBC Sports said Thursday is “the most important outing of his young career.”

The Guardians have life after Wednesday's demolition: José Ramírez went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and a diving stop that took away a bases-loaded hit, Jo Adell's bases-clearing triple keyed a four-run third, and Cleveland pitchers struck out 19 — a postseason franchise record for White Sox batters. If Cleveland wins Thursday, Gavin Williams is the likely Game 5 starter and the series goes back to Progressive Field for a Saturday decider. The stakes couldn't be higher — our ALDS Game 4 preview has the full breakdown.
NLCS is set: Brewers vs. Dodgers
One October bracket closed Wednesday night at Petco Park: the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 in Game 4 to win the NLDS 3-1 and advance to the National League Championship Series, where the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers are waiting. Jackson Chourio's single to center in the fifth drove in Garrett Mitchell with the go-ahead run; Mitchell then robbed Manny Machado of a go-ahead two-run homer with a leaping grab at the center-field wall in the eighth. Fernando Tatís Jr.'s solo shot in the third was San Diego's only answer.
It was an absurdly tense series — no team ever led by more than two runs — and Milwaukee's bullpen was the difference: one earned run in 19 innings across the four games, with Trevor Megill working a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the series. The NLCS is a rematch of last year's, which the Dodgers swept; Milwaukee will be looking for revenge after chasing down the best record in baseball (103 wins) this season. The Dodgers punched their ticket by finishing off the Braves — and our NLDS Game 4 preview set the stage for Wednesday's clincher.
Lakers vs. Kings, preseason — 7:30 p.m. PT, ESPN2, Crypto.com Arena
National TV, Luka Dončić, and the second meeting in four days. The Lakers and Kings square off again at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night — ESPN and ESPN2 are televising just five preseason matchups this year, and the Lakers are in two of them. It's the third game in four nights to open the preseason for Los Angeles, which means the story isn't the score, it's the rotation: Dončić, Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler are locked in as starters, with small forward and power forward still open battles between Quentin Grimes, Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Jake LaRavia and Jarred Vanderbilt.
The Kings counter with their own debutante: No. 7 overall pick Darius Acuff Jr., 19, making his unofficial NBA debut tour after Monday's opener in Sacramento. The Lakers then get five days to prepare for the regular-season opener on October 21 against the Warriors. Catch up on Monday's preseason opener and the roster storylines here.
Blackhawks at Islanders — 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+ (MSGSN/CHSN), UBS Arena
The NHL's Thursday appetizer is on Long Island, where the Islanders (1-2) host the Blackhawks (1-3) at UBS Arena. New York is a -178 favorite with Chicago at +146 and the total at 5.5, per FanDuel Sportsbook, with numberFire giving the Islanders a 59.6% win probability. The storylines run both ways: Chicago just earned its first win of the season in Tuesday's home opener — a 4-2 win over St. Louis in which Patrick Kane took the ice at United Center in a Blackhawks sweater for the first time in more than three years, a span of 1,324 days. Sam Rinzel's power-play goal tied it early in the second, and the building shook.
The Islanders are regrouping after Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Rangers, with Ilya Sorokin moving back into the No. 1 goalie spot. Chicago heads back on the road looking to prove Tuesday wasn't a one-night sugar rush — and with Kane back in black and red, every Blackhawks game is appointment television again.
Las Vegas: Metallica night three at Sphere
And then there's the loudest room in town. Metallica plays night three of its 24-show “Life Burns Faster” residency at Sphere on Thursday — the first show of the second No Repeat Weekend, with the matching night set for Saturday, October 10. The opening weekend was a statement of intent: roughly 30 songs across two nights with zero repeats, honoring the No Repeat Weekend tradition from the band's M72 world tour.

The deep cuts are the story: “...And Justice for All” played live for the first time since 2014, “Now That We're Dead” returned after a five-year absence, “The Outlaw Torn” came back for the first time since 2019 — and Saturday's show unearthed “Devil's Dance” for the first time since June 7, 2008, an 18-year gap. Nearly 40,000 fans came through the doors over the two opening nights, and James Hetfield surveyed the wraparound visuals and told the crowd, as USA Today reported: “This is a dream come true and beyond.” The run continues October 15 & 17, 22 & 24, 29 & 31 and November 5 & 7 before the band returns in 2027 — 24 shows through March 13, 2027. Relive night two's “Devil's Dance” moment here and read our residency launch coverage.
That's Thursday: five sports, one legendary band, and a playoff bracket that just got its marquee matchup. Set your reminders — and if you're in Vegas, the Strip is going to be loud.
