Big Foe Is Headed to Turin

Frances Tiafoe lost early in Paris and could only watch. Then Ben Shelton beat Tommy Paul on Friday — and the best season of Tiafoe’s career got its ending: a first ATP Finals berth.

Frances Tiafoe was not on the court when his season found its ending. He was watching it, the way the rest of us were, while his friend tried to do him the biggest favor of his career.

Ben Shelton beat Tommy Paul 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the Paris Masters quarterfinals on Friday, the Associated Press reported, and that one result settled two races at once. It put Shelton into his first Paris semifinal. And it closed the last door on Paul’s hopes of reaching the ATP Finals — which means the seat Paul was chasing belongs to Tiafoe. For the first time in his career, Big Foe is going to the Finals.

“Frances has had an outstanding year. One of my best friends, and to see him make Turin for the first time is amazing,” Shelton said after the match. “I’m super happy for him, and obviously we have had a lot of Americans competing for that spot. It’s been a big year from all of us, and it’s cool that we are all in the mix.”

A week of watching other people’s matches

Tiafoe did not make this easy on himself. He went to Paris holding one of the last seats in the Race to Turin and lost his opening match to Frenchman Quentin Halys in a deciding-set tiebreak. From that moment, his Finals debut was out of his hands. He needed the math to hold for three more days, while Paul and Taylor Fritz — two Americans who know his game as well as anyone alive — kept winning matches that could have erased him.

Paul’s path was narrow but real: reach the Paris final, or watch someone else take the seat. Shelton made sure the question never got that far. He hit 19 aces, took the first set, gave the second back, then broke early in the third and served his way home for his 44th tour-level win of the season. When the last ball was struck, Tiafoe could not be caught anymore. The seventh seat was his.

The season that earned it

One good week did not put Tiafoe in Turin. A full year did. Start in February, when he reached the final in Acapulco. Then June, on the grass in Halle, where he beat three top-10 players in five matches — Flavio Cobolli, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Fritz, the last of them in straight sets in the final — to win the biggest title of his career, his fourth overall and his first at the ATP 500 level. No American had ever won that tournament before him.

The summer kept building. A second Masters 1000 final in Cincinnati, where he fell to Arthur Fils in three sets. Then New York, the place that loves him most: a straight-sets win over former champion Daniil Medvedev, a quarterfinal comeback from two sets down against Alex Michelsen that ran four hours and 38 minutes, and a third US Open semifinal, where Shelton stopped him in four sets. Two weeks later the rankings made it official — world No. 8, the highest of his career. Add it up and it is 44 tour-level wins and the strongest body of work he has ever put together in a single season.

This is the part worth sitting with. Tiafoe has been famous for a long time — the kid from Hyattsville, Maryland, who learned the game at the tennis center where his father worked maintenance, who beat Rafael Nadal under the lights in 2022 and turned himself into the people’s main event at the US Open. Fame was never the question. The question was whether the results would ever fill a whole calendar instead of a couple of magical weeks. In 2026, they did.

What waits in Turin

The ATP Finals are the sport’s smallest room. Eight singles players, a round-robin group stage, then semifinals and a final, November 15–22 at the Inalpi Arena. Seven of the eight seats are now set, per the ATP’s qualification announcements: Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli, Arthur Fils and Tiafoe. The last seat came down to Friday night in Paris — Fritz takes it if he beats Alcaraz in their quarterfinal; if Alcaraz wins, Spain’s Rafael Jodar goes instead. The groups are drawn once the field is complete.

One more thing shapes the week: Jannik Sinner, the two-time defending champion, qualified back in July but shut his season down with a right knee injury. There will be a new champion in Turin no matter what. And Shelton and Tiafoe together give the United States two men in the eight-man field for the second year in a row — before last season, the last time two Americans stood in this field at once was 2006, when Andy Roddick and James Blake made it. If Fritz closes his match in Paris, it becomes three.

Turin is not Ashe. It is quieter, smaller, indoors, and every man in the building has already had the kind of year Tiafoe just had. That is exactly why getting in matters. For a decade, the Finals were the party at the end of the season that American men watched from outside. Tiafoe just walked through the door — at 28, playing the best tennis of his life, with nothing left to prove about whether he belongs. The only thing left to decide is what he does once he is inside.
