LONDON · MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2026
Some returns announce themselves quietly. James Maddison's did the opposite. Fourteen minutes into his first Tottenham start in 536 days, against Coventry City, the club where his professional career began, Maddison took a pass from Mohammed Kudus and bent a first-time shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner, and a stadium that had arrived braced for another miserable Monday instead got the opening scene of a 3-1 win — Tottenham's first of this Premier League season, at the seventh time of asking. Jack Rudoni levelled for Coventry four minutes after half-time, Omar Marmoush restored the lead on 58 minutes with his first goal for the club, Dejan Kulusevski came off the bench late on for his first appearance in 526 days, and Ben Davies, of all people, wrapped it up in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Sky Sports' report recorded the table consequence plainly: Spurs, who kicked off rock bottom, move level on six points with Coventry and above them on goal difference into 16th.
The goal that ended two droughts at once
Put the Maddison goal in its full context and it gets better, not worse. The Press Association's account, carried by the Leigh Journal, noted this was his first start in 536 days, since the spring of 2025, before the injuries that took him and Kulusevski out of this team in May of that year. Yardbarker's report added the scoring detail: the strike ended a 610-day goal drought, and it was his 21st Premier League goal from outside the box since his debut in August 2018 — a figure OptaJoe put at least two clear of any other player in the division, Kevin De Bruyne and James Ward-Prowse included. Against his boyhood club, from 22 yards, first time, top corner. If you are going to wait 536 days to start a football match, that is how you spend the wait.
It nearly was not the story of the first half at all. Coventry, who arrived on back-to-back wins under Frank Lampard and were making their first-ever trip to this stadium, almost scored after 11 seconds, Antonin Kinsky denying Brandon Thomas-Asante from a tight angle, and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto kept troubling the home defence before Maddison intervened. Dominic Solanke then tapped in an Andy Robertson cross on 18 minutes only for the offside flag to cut the celebrations short, as Sky Sports' key moments recorded. Spurs led 1-0 at the break, but nobody in the building was relaxed, and they had numbers to justify the nerves: as Sky Sports pointed out, no side has dropped more points from winning positions at home in the Premier League since the start of 2024-25 than Tottenham's 30.
Rudoni lands the punch, Marmoush throws the counter
Four minutes into the second half, the familiar script arrived on cue. Thomas-Asante was involved again, the ball broke to Rudoni inside the area, and the Coventry midfielder forced home the equaliser past a Kinsky who, on the night's evidence, will know he should have done better. For nine minutes, this was the old Tottenham story in a new kit: a lead, a wobble, and a crowd quietly preparing its lines about a team that cannot close.
Then Marmoush changed the ending. Robertson supplied the pass on 58 minutes and the Egyptian, a summer arrival from Manchester City, turned and arrowed a fierce strike into the far corner for his first goal in a Spurs shirt. The Premier League's own match blog supplied the strangest footnote of the night: all 11 of Marmoush's Premier League goals have now been scored at home, the most any player in the competition's history has managed without scoring a single one away. Tottenham will not care where he scores them, so long as he keeps scoring them. The win came at a cost, though — Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo were both forced off around the 69th minute, Maddison departed to a standing ovation, and Marmoush himself limped away late on, with Mathys Tel taking his place.
Kulusevski's roar, Davies' footnote, and a coach exhaling
The loudest cheer of the night was not for a goal. With five minutes left, Kulusevski came off the bench, ending a 526-day absence that began with a serious knee injury in May 2025, and the roar that greeted him was the sound of a club getting a piece of itself back. The Press Association called it a night to savour for both returning men, and it is hard to argue: Maddison scored, Kulusevski returned, and the £300m of summer talent around them finally looked, as Sky Sports' Patrick Rowe put it, like pieces of one puzzle rather than several different ones. Rowe's verdict was that Maddison looks like the piece that can link them together, dropping deep, finding pockets and threading passes for Solanke's runs — and that keeping him fit is now essential.
There was still time for one last flicker of anxiety, and for Davies to extinguish it. In the sixth minute of added time the Welsh defender, on as a substitute, drove a low effort that beat Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth to make it 3-1 and turn the final seconds into a celebration instead of a siege. Roberto De Zerbi, who had taken his squad to Marbella for warm-weather training in a bid to reset a disjointed start, per Football.London's account, finally has a win to build on: one victory, two long-lost playmakers back on the pitch, and a climb off the bottom of the table. The test of whether Monday was a turning point or a reprieve comes quickly — Sky Sports note that Chelsea at Stamford Bridge are next, on Saturday night. For one evening, though, the team that started the night last in the Premier League played like a side that had remembered what it was supposed to be.
