TreVeyon Henderson Says He Was Hospitalized After an 'Unexpected and Unusual Medical Emergency'

The Patriots running back broke a week of silence on Friday: unexplained neurological symptoms put him in the hospital for several days, his tests came back reassuring, the cause remains unknown — and there is no timetable for his return.

For more than a week, the Patriots’ injury report has carried a single word next to TreVeyon Henderson’s name: illness. On Friday morning, the running back explained what that word has been covering. In a statement posted to his social media accounts, Henderson wrote: “Recently, I experienced an unexpected and unusual medical emergency involving a series of unexplained neurological symptoms that required hospitalization for several days.”

He said he underwent extensive testing and evaluation during that hospitalization, and that the results so far offer reassurance without answers. “While the results of my comprehensive medical testing have come back positive and reassuring, the cause of this remains unknown and unexplainable.”

The symptoms, Henderson said, “have affected my strength, coordination, and some of my physical functions.” He is working with specialists and physical therapists on his recovery, and he said he is committed to doing everything necessary to return to full health. He closed the statement with where his priorities sit: “My health and long-term well-being remain my foremost priorities.”

Henderson first appeared on New England’s injury report with an illness on Thursday, October 29. He missed the Patriots’ Week 8 game against Miami on November 1 — a game New England won without him — and has not returned to practice since, sitting out Wednesday and Thursday this week, according to NESN. His last game was October 22 against Chicago. According to USA Today, neither Henderson nor the Patriots have provided any indication of whether there is a potential timetable for his return.

The single word “illness” had already begun to draw questions. This week, ESPN’s Patriots reporter Mike Reiss suggested that Henderson’s absence could be connected to adversity he is facing away from the field. Until Friday, that was as much as anyone outside the team had to go on; Henderson’s statement is the first explanation from Henderson himself.

It is the latest interruption in a stop-start second season for the 24-year-old. A preseason ankle injury cost him the opener, and a high ankle sprain suffered on October 11 at Las Vegas slowed him again last month. New England drafted Henderson 38th overall out of Ohio State in 2025, a second-round pick brought in to be the Patriots’ featured running back.

For now, the only account of Henderson’s condition is Henderson’s own, and it is deliberately narrow: a medical emergency, several days in a hospital, tests that came back reassuring, and a cause nobody has found yet. Reading the statement, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio noted it would lead one to believe the 24-year-old will not be cleared for contact football activities anytime soon. What it means for his season is a question Henderson did not answer on Friday, and it is not one the Patriots have answered either.
