MONDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2026 — Sunday at Allegiant was the kind of afternoon this town moved here for: a 30-27 heavyweight fight between the Chiefs and Raiders, decided in the final minutes with the Black Hole at full throat. Across town, Wynn started the countdown on a show that cost an estimated $150 million to build. And out in the desert, a rocket didn’t launch. Las Vegas and the Southwest, October 5.
The scoreboard30-27, decided late
Chiefs 30, Raiders 27. Kenneth Walker ran for 177 yards and scored twice in the final 3:21 — the second after a kickoff fumble — while Kirk Cousins threw for 365 yards in a losing effort. Kansas City takes the AFC West lead at 4-0; the Raiders fall to 3-1. Full recap of the classic at Allegiant.
The loss stings, but the bigger story out of Allegiant is the Raiders themselves: win or lose, this team has become a genuine marquee draw in a market that was supposed to belong to the Chiefs. The New York Post’s framing of Sunday’s scene — the Strip’s crowds now pulling for the home team in a way the city’s original NFL narrative didn’t predict — says the Raiders are building something real in Las Vegas. At 3-1 with a home crowd that loud, they’re still very much in the division race; they just have to go through Kansas City to win it, and the Chiefs at 4-0 aren’t giving anything away.
Saturday belonged to the Rebels: UNLV 39, Cal 31, with Jackson Arnold throwing five touchdowns to hold off a furious Bears rally. Full story.
And in Los Angeles, the Dodgers dropped Game 2 of the NLDS 3-2 to the Braves — Freddie Freeman’s homer and a ninth-inning shot from Max Muncy weren’t enough against a bullpen game gone wrong. The series is even at 1-1 with Game 3 in Atlanta, and Chris Sale — rested and waiting — on the mound. Full recap.
The StripThe last bow, the next bet
It is the final week of Awakening. Wynn’s spectacle plays its remaining performances now through Saturday, when the curtain falls on a four-year run that may have been the Strip’s last true loss-leader. We went deep on the show, the money, and what replaces it in 2027.
Ten days after the finale, the Strip’s next big entertainment bet opens: Luke Combs’s Category 10 honky-tonk takes over the old Margaritaville at the Flamingo on October 15 — three stories, seven bars, two stages, room for 800. The full look inside.
It also sets up a proper country showdown on Las Vegas Boulevard: Combs’s place lands just down the street from Blake Shelton’s Ole Red, the sprawling honky-tonk that opened at the Grand Bazaar Shops in 2024. Two superstar-backed, multi-bar country playgrounds on the same corner, with the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo rolling into town in December. Somebody’s pouring a lot of bourbon this winter.

The SouthwestA scrubbed rocket, a rent shock, and the heat
The rocket didn’t go. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 was set to lift off from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 1:17 a.m. Monday with 21 military satellites for the Space Development Agency’s Tranche 1 constellation, but an automatic abort scrubbed the attempt. SpaceX said the vehicle and payload are healthy and retargeted the launch for Tuesday, October 6, in a window opening around 12:59 a.m. PT. If it flies, Arizonans with clear skies could catch the streak — the Arizona Republic’s viewing guide points to South Mountain’s Dobbins Lookout, Papago Park and the dark-sky town of Fountain Hills, among others.
In Glendale, a different kind of countdown: tenants at the Buenas Apartments near 67th Avenue and Maryland say they received letters raising rent and fees by hundreds of dollars — one tenant’s total jumped from $1,198 to $1,618 — with five days to pay or face eviction. Many residents are on Social Security or government assistance, and FOX 10 Phoenix reports tenants also describe months without air conditioning, roaches and brown water. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes sued Buenas Communities LLC back in August 2024, accusing the corporate landlord of “willingly neglecting to provide habitable living conditions.”
And the weather won’t help anyone without A/C: an extreme heat warning runs through Thursday evening for the coasts and valleys of Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Orange, San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties — and the heat is lingering across Phoenix and Las Vegas too. October, but the desert didn’t get the memo. If you’re on the Strip this week, the playbook is the same as August: water, shade, and the Bellagio Conservatory for the rare free attraction that is also air-conditioned.

The week aheadWhat’s on deck
Category 10 opens October 15 at the Flamingo. Bellagio’s fall Conservatory runs through November 7 (our October guide). The Dodgers-Braves NLDS resumes Tuesday in Atlanta with Chris Sale starting Game 3. And on Saturday, Wynn’s theater goes dark on Awakening — see our deep story for the full picture. We’ll be back tomorrow with the next Vegas Daily.
