THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026 — The most hyped rookie in hockey is walking into T-Mobile Arena for his first real road game tonight, and the Pacific-leading Golden Knights are the welcome party. The Knights just hung six on Seattle behind Tomas Hertl’s five-point night. And across town, the Raiders have a No. 1 overall quarterback who still hasn’t played a single snap — and that might be exactly the plan. Las Vegas and the Southwest, October 8.
The iceMcKenna’s first road test is in Vegas
Gavin McKenna plays his first NHL road game tonight — at T-Mobile Arena, against the Pacific-leading Golden Knights. The No. 1 overall pick and the Toronto Maple Leafs come to town as Reuters framed it Wednesday: the league’s most-hyped teenager getting his first taste of a genuinely hostile building, and the hosts aren’t exactly in a welcoming mood after what they did to Seattle on Tuesday — the 6-2 rout that completed the Northwest sweep.
The Knights didn’t just win in Seattle. They embarrassed the Kraken. Tomas Hertl put up two goals and two assists, Jack Eichel added a goal and three assists, and Mark Stone did the Gordie Howe hat trick — a goal, an assist, and a fight — while collecting his 400th point as a Golden Knight, third in franchise history. That’s a top line running on all cylinders a week into the season, and it’s the reason Vegas sits atop the Pacific with a target on its back.
The one shadow over the Seattle win: Victor Olofsson scored twice and then left the game after a boarding major and game misconduct to Seattle’s Ben Meyers. Coach Ryan Cassidy said Olofsson was being evaluated and promised an update Thursday. A two-goal winger going down is exactly the kind of thing that can take the shine off a blowout, and it’s the first real lineup question of the season. We’ll see what Cassidy says this morning.
As for tonight: McKenna vs. the Knights is must-see on paper, but the story is simpler than the hype. Toronto’s rookie phenom has to deal with a Vegas team that just showed it can roll four lines and score from everywhere, in a building that gets louder the longer you keep it close. Rookie wall, meet the Fortress. Puck drops tonight at T-Mobile Arena.
The waitThe Raiders’ No. 1 pick still hasn’t played
Fernando Mendoza has not taken a single regular-season NFL snap through Week 4. The No. 1 overall pick — the Heisman winner out of Indiana, the franchise quarterback the Raiders supposedly built this whole season around — got graded N/A in theScore’s Oct. 7 rookie report card, sitting behind 38-year-old Kirk Cousins, now in his 15th season. He’s the first No. 1 overall quarterback to not start Week 1 since Baker Mayfield in 2018.

Here’s the thing, though: the Raiders are 4-0 — fresh off the 30-27 win over the Chiefs and host the Patriots on Sunday — the opening lines are out for Week 5. There’s no emergency. No fan revolt. Nobody in that building is in a hurry. Mendoza himself said it back in August, per theSpun: “I’m excited to see my guys go out there and play and try to be the best teammate possible.” Coach Klint Kubiak said Cousins “earned it” with a strong camp, and the scoreboard hasn’t argued with him yet. We broke down the whole waiting game here — it might be the smartest thing this franchise has done in years.
Los AngelesBack to the NLCS, again
The Dodgers eliminated the Braves 4-1 on Wednesday night, winning the NLDS 3-1 and heading to the National League Championship Series for the third straight year. The three-peat bid is alive.

It was the kind of win that’s becoming this team’s signature in October: tight until it wasn’t. Andy Pages’ two-run single in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie, Max Muncy hit his third postseason home run, and Edwin Díaz shut the door. The Braves came to win a series; the Dodgers came to remind everyone who owns October. Now they wait on the Brewers-Padres winner, and the NLCS is shaping up as a collision course between the two best teams in the National League. Sports will have the full breakdown — we’re keeping it to the scoreboard here.
ArizonaRachel’s leftovers are headed for the desert
Tropical Storm Rachel is sending its remnant moisture toward Arizona, and the weekend could get wet. Metro Phoenix could see 0.5 to 2 inches of rain, with the heaviest totals in western and northern Arizona. The strongest gusts — around 40 mph — arrive Sunday, and temperatures drop from around 103 into the 80s. After a week of baking, the desert is getting a cold front with a grudge.

The honest uncertainty is the flash-flood risk — the Republic’s weather desk is calling it just that, uncertain, and in October desert rain that’s the only number that really matters. Rain on hard-baked ground runs off fast, and burn scars and low-water crossings turn a good storm into a dangerous one in minutes. If you’re driving the washes or hiking this weekend, this is the weekend to check the forecast twice. The rain itself is welcome. The timing, like most October storms, is a coin flip between relief and warning.
ArizonaA candidate’s allegation, carefully
Democratic congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia, who is challenging Rep. Abraham Hamadeh in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, told the Phoenix New Times she was raped in a Sun City parking lot in August while repairing a campaign sign late at night. She said she was knocked unconscious, awoke mid-assault, and reported the incident on Aug. 31. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a report was filed and said the investigation is ongoing, declining further comment.
This is an allegation she made publicly, reported by two national outlets this week — USA Today and the New York Post — and that’s the frame we’re staying in. We’re not speculating on the case, and we’re not editorializing on the politics of it. The facts as reported: she came forward publicly in October, she filed a police report Aug. 31, and law enforcement says the investigation is active. When there’s more, we’ll report more.
Around townWhat’s on deck
Around Las Vegas this weekend and beyond: the Helldorado Days Rodeo returns to downtown’s Core Arena at the Plaza on Nov. 13–14 — tickets are moving after years of sellouts, and November is quietly becoming country month in this town. On the Strip, the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix prep keeps tightening the corridor — the Flamingo bridge build is the next squeeze, so plan your weekend drives accordingly. And tonight, of course, it’s the Knights and the Leafs at the Fortress. We’ll be back tomorrow with the next Vegas Daily.
