Patriots vs. Raiders odds: Opening lines for Week 5 matchup at Gillette Stadium

The short version: The Las Vegas Raiders come to Gillette Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 11, and oddsmakers have made the Patriots 3.5-point home favorites with the total at 45.5, according to opening lines posted at Borgata Sportsbook and echoed across DraftKings, FanDuel, and bet365. It's a number that says plenty about Week 4: New England is coming off its most impressive win in years, while Las Vegas is coming off a near-miss against the Chiefs that kept its perfect record against the spread intact.

The opening numbers

The Patriots opened as 3.5-point home favorites over the Raiders, with the over/under set at 45.5 points, according to Vegas Insider's Week 5 opening-odds roundup, which tracked the line from Borgata Sportsbook. The opening moneyline was listed at Patriots -200, Raiders +160. Sports Illustrated's Week 5 opening-odds rundown, which used DraftKings Sportsbook, matched the same figures exactly: Patriots -3.5 (-110) with a 45.5 total.

FanDuel's numbers were nearly identical when NFL Spy reported them: spread Patriots -3.5, over/under 45.5, and a moneyline of Patriots -200 to Raiders +168. Covers' tracking page listed the same 45.5 total alongside a -3.5 spread, and bet365's Week 5 board, as of Oct. 4, showed Patriots -3.5 with Patriots -190 and Raiders +160 on the moneyline.

As of early in the week, the line wasn't moving. Covers' updated Week 5 odds table, dated Oct. 6, still showed Patriots -3.5 and 45.5, and NBC Sports' Monday odds update from DraftKings had the same spread and total. Borgata sportsbook director Tom Gable told Vegas Insider to expect the line to breathe a little: "Very early money is on the Patriots, and you'll probably see some toggling between 3.5 and 4," he said.

How they got here

Both teams arrive with betting markets buzzing for opposite reasons, and both earned their reputations in Week 4, according to Vegas Insider's Week 5 preview.

New England (2-2 straight up, 3-1 against the spread) pulled off the upset of Week 4, stopping the league's hottest team. The Patriots closed as 7-point underdogs at Buffalo and won 29-26, sealed by Drake Maye's 23-yard touchdown pass to Efton Chism III with 1:50 remaining and an interception of Bills quarterback Josh Allen with 1:14 left. It was the kind of win that makes bookmakers take notice — New England took the field as a touchdown underdog and walked off with the franchise's most significant road win in a long time.

Las Vegas (3-1 straight up, 4-0 against the spread) gave Kansas City everything it could handle in a battle of unbeatens, falling 30-27 while covering as 5.5-point underdogs to stay perfect at the betting window. The Raiders are, by the numbers, one of the best bets in football so far this season — unbeaten against the spread through four weeks.

That contrast is the engine of this line. The Raiders have the better record, but the Patriots have home-field advantage — typically valued around three points by oddsmakers — and the fresher, flashier result. "The Raiders gave the Chiefs a great game in Week 4, but couldn't quite get the job done, while the Patriots handed the Bills their first loss of the season," Gable told Vegas Insider. "Drake Maye looked a lot better, and maybe that was the spark New England needed to get its season back on track."

The matchup underneath the number

The story of this game is two offenses that found their stride at the same time, according to Covers' Week 5 preview. The Raiders have scored at least 26 points in each of their first four games, and Kirk Cousins has thrown 11 touchdown passes through four weeks, spreading them to seven different receivers. Even a solid Kansas City defense, allowing 19.3 points per game, couldn't slow Las Vegas down.

Maye, meanwhile, looked like a different quarterback in Buffalo. Covers noted he threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns against the Bills, and his larger body of work — 3,294 yards and 31 touchdowns last season — suggests the Buffalo performance is more signal than noise. New England can also lean on the run against a Raiders defense allowing 5.2 yards per carry, per Covers' analysis.

Covers' early lean is on the underdog: "With the better team getting more than a field goal, I'm taking Las Vegas to cover on the road," the site wrote, projecting a 24-21 Patriots victory — a New England win that still falls short of the 3.5-point spread. On the total, Covers leaned Over 45.5, arguing both offenses are showing enough life to push the pace.

Where to find it

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Oct. 11, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, with the game airing on CBS, according to NBC Sports and Covers. The Raiders' 4-0 record against the spread will get its stiffest test yet on the road, and the Patriots will try to prove that Buffalo was the start of something rather than a one-week detour.

Lines move, and these will — the question, as Gable put it, is whether the number settles at 3.5 or stretches toward 4 by kickoff. Either way, the market's message is clear: it believes in what it saw from Drake Maye in Orchard Park, and it is not ready to fade a Raiders team that keeps covering anyway.
